Should The Bruins Trade Morgan Geekie?

Yahoo03-03-2025

The Boston Bruins currently do not have a playoff spot, and they are expected to make roster changes by this week's trade deadline. Pending unrestricted free agents like Trent Frederic and Justin Brazeau appear to be the most likely to be traded by the Bruins. However, pending restricted free agent Morgan Geekie has also been creating some buzz.
On the latest episode of 32 Thoughts: The Podcast, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman mentioned Geekie as a player to keep an eye on this week.
"It will be interesting to see what they do with Morgan Geekie," Friedman said. "There is another year of team control, although RFA... I think there were some attempts to try to extend him this year, which, obviously, didn't happen. I'd be curious to see where that one goes with him."
With Geekie remaining under team control after this season, they do not need to rush a trade. However, at the same time, his trade value is undoubtedly high right now. He has played spectacularly down the stretch, posting 10 goals and 14 points over his last 18 games. He also scored a career-high 19 goals this season and has 32 points in 57 contests.
If the Bruins want to sell high on Geekie, now would be the time. However, his impressive play and great chemistry with superstar David Pastrnak also help the argument that the Bruins should keep him around. Geekie has been one of Boston's top players this season, so there would certainly be risk in trading him. There are not too many Bruins who are producing as well as him offensively right now.
What do you think the Bruins should do with Geekie? Should the Original Six club trade him or keep him around? Vote in the poll above to share your opinion.

Five players to watch this week at Bruins Development Camp

Here are five players to keep tabs on during Development Camp: James Hagens, C The crown jewel of a revamped Bruins prospect pipeline, Hagens could assuage the pain drawn from a miserable 2024-25 season if he develops into a legitimate franchise pivot. Despite dropping from his standing as the projected No. 1 pick entering the 2024-25 campaign, Hagens is a skilled playmaker whose skating ability, slick hands, and transition game should translate well to hockey's highest level. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up Related : Advertisement Another year at Boston College will benefit Hagens, giving him time to fill out his 5-foot-11-inch frame. But this week could offer Bruins fans longing for high-end talent a glimpse at what's to come when Hagens puts on a black-and-gold sweater full-time. 'I don't think it's an alarming thing for us at all,' Bruins director of amateur scouting Ryan Nadeau said of Hagens' 37-point freshman season at BC. 'James helped drive a lot of play. Love the way that he can play with pace and attack with pace. Controlled pucks offensively. Just a real exciting player for us.' Related : Hagens headlines an intriguing Advertisement Will Zellers, LW One of the top prospects acquired in Boston's Related : Dean Letourneau, C All eyes might be fixated on Hagens next season, but BC is expected to feature six Bruins prospects on its roster: Hagens, Moore, Dean Letourneau, Oskar Jellvik, Andre Gasseau, and Kristian Kostadinski. And while Hagens might alleviate some pressure on Letourneau, this is shaping up to be a critical year for the Eagles' pivot. Selected in the first round last year (No. 25), Letourneau was viewed as a project by Boston — with the 6-7 center's size and skill painting the picture of a potential matchup nightmare. But after spending most of his draft year dominating at the prep level (127 points in 56 games at St. Andrew's College), Letourneau opted to make the jump to Hockey East rather than spending a year in the USHL. 'I think we all would have agreed that maybe another year of the USHL [or] a full year of the USHL would have been the best path,' Bruins general manager Don Sweeney acknowledged Wednesday. The 2024-25 campaign was a struggle for Letourneau, who had zero goals and three assists over 36 games. At this stage, the Bruins might welcome a scenario where Letourneau develops into a bottom-six ace like the 6-7 Brian Boyle. But the Bruins need to see more assertiveness on the ice — especially given Letourneau's imposing frame. Advertisement Albin Boija, G The Bruins will have one drafted goaltender in Development Camp in Providence College's Philip Svedebäck (2021 fourth-round pick). But as they try to find a young netminder to pair with Jeremy Swayman for the long haul, fellow Maine Black Bear Boija is worth keeping tabs on. A camp invite, Boija is expected to be one of the top undrafted college free agents next season after helping Maine to its first Hockey East championship since 2004. The 21-year-old won 23 games last season, sporting a .928 save percentage. With the futures of Michael DiPietro and Brandon Bussi, Boija could be an intriguing add for Boston next spring. Chris Pelosi, C/W One of the more under-the-radar prospects in Boston's system, Pelosi had a strong freshman season at Quinnipiac. He had 13 goals and 24 points in 38 games for the Bobcats, with 19 points over the final 23 games of the season. A third-round selection by the Bruins in 2023, Pelosi is a high-motor, physical forward who was noticeable in last year's camp. He might be more of a third-line player if he reaches the NHL, but Pelosi's sandpaper style could make him a useful asset. Advertisement Conor Ryan can be reached at

Giroux re-signs with Senators; Blue Jackets lock up Fabbro to 4-year, $16.5M contract

Veteran Senators forward Claude Giroux is staying put in Ottawa for one more season, and Blue Jackets defenseman Dante Fabbro has a new four-year contract that keeps him in Columbus. Meantime, forward Conor Sheary's tenure in Tampa Bay is ending after being placed on unconditional waivers for the purpose to terminate his contract on Sunday, as teams took stock of their rosters two days before the start of the NHL's free agency period. The Senators announced re-signing the 37-year-old Giroux to a one-year, $2 million contract that features an additional $2.75 million in bonus incentives. Girioux has 18 seasons of NHL experience including his first 15 in Philadelphia, where he served as captain. Last year, he had 15 goals and 35 assists in 81 games to reach 50 points for a 13th career season, and helped guide the Senators to their first playoff appearance in eight years. The Blue Jackets locked up Fabbro to a four-year, $16.5 million contract. Columbus acquired the 27-year-old by claiming him in November after Nashville placed Fabbro on waivers. Fabro finished the season with a career-high 26 points (nine goals, 17 assists) in 62 games with the Blue Jackets, after getting no points in six games with Nashville. 'Dante was a great addition to our team last season and keeping him in Columbus was a priority,' general manager Don Waddell said. The Lighting are parting ways with Sheary. The 10th-year player was limited to playing just five games with the Lightning last season, while spending a majority of last season in the minors because of the team's salary cap constraints. The 33-year-old Sheary had one more year left on his three-year contract, and was due to make $2 million next season. Sheary won Stanley Cups during each of his first two NHL seasons with Pittsburgh in 2016 and '17. He signed with Tampa Bay as a free agent two years ago, and finished with four goals and 15 points in 62 games with the Lightning. He also played for Buffalo and Washington, and has 124 goals and 267 points in 593 games. If unclaimed, Sheary will become an unrestricted free agent. The Seattle Kraken placed forward Joe Veleno on unconditional waivers for the purpose to buy out the final year of his contract, in which he was due to make $2.275 million. Veleno has five seasons of NHL experience and was acquired by Seattle last week in a trade that sent forward Andre Burakovsky to Chicago. The 25-year-old Veleno spent his first four-plus NHL seasons in Detroit, and has 38 goals and 81 points in 306 games. The Anaheim Ducks maintained their depth at goalie by signing Ville Husso to a two-year contract extension. The 30-year-old provides the Ducks insurance behind projected starter Lukas Dostal and Petr Mrazek, who was acquired in a trade that sent John Gibson to Detroit on Saturday. Husso has a NHL record of 71-46-19 and went 1-1-1 in four appearances with Anaheim last season after being acquired in a trade with Detroit in February. Husso spent the rest of his time with Anaheim in the minors.

Ottawa Senators re-sign veteran forward Claude Giroux to 1-year deal

The Ottawa Senators have signed veteran forward Claude Giroux to a one-year contract extension, the team announced Sunday. The deal comes with a base salary of $2 million but could rise to $4.75 million based on performance bonuses. The 37-year-old Giroux scored 15 goals and added another 35 assists last season, playing a key role on a Sens team that made the NHL playoffs for the first time since 2017. In three seasons with the Senators, Giroux has only missed a single regular season game, the team noted in its announcement. "Claude brings veteran leadership and a competitive edge to our group and has been a consistent presence on and off the ice," said Steve Staios, the Sens' general manager and president of hockey operations, in a statement. "We are excited to bring him back next season." Giroux has tallied 1,116 points over the course of 18 NHL seasons.
