Brock Purdy on Deebo Samuel departure: It sucks, we had an awesome relationship

49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is adjusting to life with a new contract and he'll have to adjust to life without wide receiver Deebo Samuel when he gets on the field this fall. Samuel moved on to the Commanders in a trade earlier this offseason, which marked a major change to the look of the offense around Purdy as Samuel has been a major part of the team's approach over the last three seasons. During an appearance on Bussin' With the Boys, Purdy noted how Samuel embraced him when he took over at quarterback for Jimmy Garoppolo in 2022 and how he'll miss that relationship during games. 'It sucks, dude. He's my boy,' Purdy said, via 'I love Deebo. Day 1, he's always had my back and believed in me when I got in. I didn't really know how the guys were going to take it when I did get thrown in. Jimmy went down, I was the last quarterback, and Deebo was nothing but just great to me, dude, building me up, and just giving me confidence. In games, we fed off each other's energy and building each other up. It was awesome, and over the last couple of years, same thing. So, we created just a great relationship. He's my brother.' The 49ers are also set to be without Brandon Aiyuk at the start of the 2025 season, so Purdy will have to build connections with other wideouts and start taking younger teammates under his wing in a similar way that Samuel did in order to keep things rolling for the Niners.

George Kittle: Deebo Samuel wanted a fresh start, so I'm happy he got one

George Kittle and Deebo Samuel shared space in the 49ers offense for the last six seasons and the partnership was a successful one for most of that run, but there won't be a seventh year together. Samuel was traded to the Commanders earlier this offseason while Kittle signed an extension that sets him up to be at tight end for the 49ers through the 2029 season. During an appearance on Bussin' With the Boys, Kittle said that he is going to miss Samuel but also knows that the wide receiver was looking to play out the rest of his career somewhere else. 'I'm happy for him that he went to Washington,' Kittle said, via 'Guys need a fresh start sometimes, and he wanted a fresh start, and so, I'm very happy for him. I'm sad that I don't have him on my team anymore because I just loved having him around the locker room and stuff like that. But I'm happy for him.' With Brandon Aiyuk still recovering from a torn ACL, the 49ers will likely look Kittle's way a lot in the early part of the season as they learn which receivers are worthy of stepping into the open spots in the lineup.

Klay Kubiak: Jauan Jennings sees himself as a dominant player

The 49ers signed Brandon Aiyuk to a big contract before the 2024 season and they had Deebo Samuel in the middle of his own sizable extension, but neither one wound up being the team's leading receiver at the end of the year. Jauan Jennings moved into that position with Aiyuk sidelined by a torn ACL and Samuel slipping from his previous level of production. Samuel is now in Washington and Aiyuk continues to work his way back to health, which means Jennings is still in his new spot in the pecking order and offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak said the wideout's mindset is to stay there regardless of who else is around. Advertisement "Yeah, I think, if you ask Jauan, he says 'I'm number one,'" Kubiak said, via "And that's his mindset, and that's why we love Jauan. That's how he sees himself. He sees himself as a dominant player. I think you guys all saw last year when he got more chances, he played really, really well. So really fired up about Jauan." Jennings had 78 catches for 963 yards and seven touchdowns in his first three seasons and then posted 77 catches for 975 yards and six scores last year, so it was a big lead forward for a wideout the 49ers will need to continue producing at a high level for their offense to catch fire in 2025.

Brock Purdy: 49ers were tired last season

As the 49ers' 2024 season wound down, defensive end Nick Bosa tried to find a bright side to missing the playoffs. Bosa said he was looking forward to having a full offseason after seeing the previous three truncated by the team's deep postseason runs. They made it to at least the NFC title game each year and Bosa said it was "definitely a grind" to miss out on having more time off. Advertisement Quarterback Brock Purdy likely agrees with Bosa's feelings about a longer offseason. During an appearance on the Built 4 More podcast, Purdy said he thought fatigue played a big role in the 49ers' drop to 6-11 last season. "And then last year, man, guys were tired," Purdy said, via "That season is no joke, and when you go from July of training and everything, all the way to the end of February, and then you really get five weeks off or so [until] you've got to report back, and then you're going again, guys are tired. They're still beat up, their bodies." The 49ers will have more time to recuperate this year, but they'll also have to adapt to significant changes to the roster on both sides of the ball if they are going to return to the top rungs of the NFC.
