George Kittle: Deebo Samuel wanted a fresh start, so I'm happy he got one
George Kittle and Deebo Samuel shared space in the 49ers offense for the last six seasons and the partnership was a successful one for most of that run, but there won't be a seventh year together.
Samuel was traded to the Commanders earlier this offseason while Kittle signed an extension that sets him up to be at tight end for the 49ers through the 2029 season. During an appearance on Bussin' With the Boys, Kittle said that he is going to miss Samuel but also knows that the wide receiver was looking to play out the rest of his career somewhere else.
'I'm happy for him that he went to Washington,' Kittle said, via 49ersWebzone.com. 'Guys need a fresh start sometimes, and he wanted a fresh start, and so, I'm very happy for him. I'm sad that I don't have him on my team anymore because I just loved having him around the locker room and stuff like that. But I'm happy for him.'
With Brandon Aiyuk still recovering from a torn ACL, the 49ers will likely look Kittle's way a lot in the early part of the season as they learn which receivers are worthy of stepping into the open spots in the lineup.

He shared an honest message about the transition during a recent appearance on the "Bussin with the Boys" podcast. "I'm happy for him that he went to Washington," he said. Nonetheless, it's clear both sides were ready for a fresh start and each party stands to benefit from the move. Samuel's role changes as the No. 2 in Washington but has a clearly defined role absolutely necessary for that offense. Meanwhile, the young receivers in San Francisco get their chance to blossom with Ricky Pearsall and Jauan Jennings taking on more pronounced responsibilities. While it's unfortunate to see a teammate and friend go, the positive for Kittle remains that both men are set up for success seasons in 2025. Yes, his stats were down across the board, and his general play wasn't consistent, but we aren't sure if it was a "slump" of sorts. For Daniels, replicating his efforts from last year is going to be tough, after winning Offensive Rookie of the Year and making it to the NFC Championship game, so we have to be careful about expecting too much from a second-year quarterback. As bad as it sounds, a 10-7 season and making the playoffs is a "regression" for Daniels, but it would still be a good season, providing his level of play doesn't dip too much.
