Cam Newton Has Controversial Take on Eagles' Jalen Hurts
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. As soon as Cam Newton made it clear that he doesn't consider Jalen Hurts a top 10 quarterback, he braced for the potential response coming his way from Philadelphia Eagles fans. "I know everybody is going to get mad at this," Newton said on '4th & 1 with Cam Newton.' "Cam is hating on Jalen Hurts," he said in a mocking tone. The former Carolina Panthers quarterback went on to explain his reasoning behind his personal ranking, which doesn't favor the Super Bowl MVP. "It's hard for me to grade Jalen Hurts with the talent that he has around him," Newton explained. "Jalen Hurts is a great quarterback, but if we're talking about what they bring to the table, it's hard to judge what Jalen Hurts can do when you're throwing to a guy like AJ Brown, DeVonta Smith, you have tight end skillset, you have a dominant defense, the best running back in the game. Download Madden and see how many stars are on the offensive side of Philly." Cam left Jalen Hurts out of his Top 10 QBs… and here's why — 4th&1 with Cam Newton (@4thand1show) July 18, 2025 Newton's argument is far from out of the box. Since the Eagles have stacked their offense with talented weapons, Hurts has had a hard time escaping the narrative that he's just a product of the guys around him. The Eagles' passer falls under the "system quarterback" category, which is often used to discredit certain QBs. When Newton looks at some of his top picks for the quarterback position, he considers players like Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen elite. The primary argument was that Jackson and Allen have to rise above and play at an elite level just to get their teams to win. The former MVP doesn't believe Hurts needs to do that. Cam Newton #1 of the Carolina Panthers during their game against the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium on November 28, 2021 in Miami Gardens, Florida."Jalen Hurts does not have to play elite for the Philadelphia Eagles to win," he said. "He has to play good—but he doesn't have to play elite. We're not asking you to win the game, we're just asking you not to lose it." Despite the negative narratives that frequently float around Hurts, the Eagles' quarterback has a very impressive resume at 26 years old. Since entering the NFL as a second-round pick out of Oklahoma, Hurts has spent the last four seasons as a full-time starter for the Eagles. From an individual standpoint, Hurts' best season was in 2022. He passed for 3,701 yards, 22 touchdowns, and six interceptions. He rushed 165 times for 760 yards and 13 touchdowns. Hurts was an MVP candidate, but a late-season injury affected his standing. In 2024, the Eagles dialed up a heavy dose of Saquon Barkley, which left Hurts throwing the ball for under 400 attempts for the first time since his rookie season. Although he threw for just 2,903 yards and 18 touchdowns in 15 games, Hurts had his most accurate season, posting his career-high passer rating at 103.7 When the playoffs came around, Hurts helped lead the Eagles to Super Bowl LIX, where they defeated the Kansas City Chiefs. Hurts was the game's MVP. With two NFC Championship wins, a Super Bowl victory, Super Bowl MVP, two All-Pros, and two Pro Bowls, Hurts has a pretty decorated resume five years in. Yet, many arguments have been made to keep him out of the top 10 QBs who are currently active. For more Philadelphia Eagles and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports

There is one very glaring omission from Cam Newton's list of the NFL's top 10 QBs
The reigning Super Bowl MVP is not one of the NFL's top 10 quarterbacks, at least according to Cam Newton. On the latest episode of 4th & 1 with Cam Newton, the Carolina Panthers legend gave his thoughts on ESPN's list of the game's very best passers. In fact, he even offered up a top-10 list of his own . . . One pretty glaring omission from the list was Philadelphia Eagles star Jalen Hurts, who has recently been compared to Newton in some spirited debates between fans. Newton explained why he didn't include the dynamic, dual-threat Super Bowl champ. "Jalen Hurts is a great quarterback. Do not get that twisted," Newton stated. "But if we're talking about what they bring to the table, it's hard to judge what Jalen Hurts can do when you're throwing to a guy like A.J. Brown, Devonta Smith. When you have a tight end skill set, you have a dominant defense, you have the best running back [Saquon Barkley] in the game." Despite the accolades—the Lombardi Trophy, the two Pro Bowl selections and the second-team All-Pro nod—the 26-year-old Hurts is one of the more polarizing players in football. And some, like Newton, believe Hurts has greatly benefitted from what might be the most talented roster the NFL has seen in quite some time. Regardless, Hurts has only played the hand he's been dealt—and he's played it well. In his four years as Philly's full-time starter, he's averaged 4,096.3 total yards per season while tallying 131 total touchdowns. His 55 career rushing scores account for the third-most all-time by a quarterback. Newton still ranks No. 1 on that list with 75. Follow @ThePanthersWire on Twitter/X for more Panthers content.

'Adults allowed it': Cam Newton blasts Geno Smith over viral OT7 jersey stomp incident
Cam Newton reacts to OT7 drama (Image credits: IG/X) Cam Newton has addressed the controversy that erupted at the OT7 tournament, where players from the South Florida Express were caught on camera stomping on his Auburn jersey. The act, seen as deeply disrespectful, occurred just before a high-stakes 7-on-7 game between South Florida Express and Newton's team, C1N. While C1N went on to win the game 39-17, the heated debate over sportsmanship and adult supervision quickly stole the spotlight. Newton takes aim at coaching conduct, not the kids The former NFL MVP didn't hold back as he took aim at Geno Smith, who was coaching the South Florida Express during the incident. Newton made it clear that he doesn't blame the young players for the stunt, but rather the adults who allowed it to happen. His comments came during the latest episode of the 4th&1 podcast, where he gave his take on the incident that went viral online. Skip Bayless gets FREAKY, Cowboys ALL-IN on Parsons & Cam SLAMS SHAMEFUL Jersey Stomping 'My issue isn't with the kids. My issue is with the adult that allowed the kids to do it,' Newton stated at the 21:30 mark of the episode. He emphasized that the responsibility lies with the leadership, not the youth involved in the act. Newton added that had the roles been reversed, he would have immediately intervened. Newton demands accountability from adults on the sidelines The 2015 NFL MVP explained that he only learned about Smith's involvement with the SFE program recently. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Providers are furious: Internet access without a subscription! He questioned how a figure like Smith could let such a blatant display of disrespect go unchecked. 'Now, I didn't know Geno Smith's involvement with South Florida Express prior to this past week. But if the C1N kids had a Geno Smith jersey, and they proceeded to stomp on it, I would've stopped it instantly,' Newton said. 'So when I see actions like these ... there was an adult behind this and they allowed it. And that's what was most disrespectful about this whole situation.' Panthers great Cam Newton calls out Geno Smith, coaches over wild jersey-stomping incident
A post shared by OT7 (@ot7) 7v7 tournaments never seem to be boring when Cam Newton is on hand. The Carolina Panthers great recently addressed a tiny bit of controversy from last week's OT7 event in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., which pitted his C1N team against South Florida Express. Before the squads squared off, quite a few players from SLE tried to make a statement by stomping out Newton's Auburn jersey at midfield. But the real statement was ultimately made by C1N . . . Newton talked about the pregame shenanigans on the latest episode of 4th & 1 with Cam Newton, and brought Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Geno Smith—a coach for SLE—into the conversation. "My issue isn't with the kids. My issue is with the adult that allowed the kids to do it," he stated. "Now, I didn't know Geno Smith's involvement with South Florida Express prior to this week . . . but if the C1N had a Geno Smith jersey and they proceeded to stomp on it, I would've stopped it instantly. So when I see actions like this, there was an adult behind this and they allowed that. And that's what was most disrespectful about this whole situation." Smith also garnered some attention that weekend after getting into a heated bout of trash talk with an apparent bystander . . . A post shared by OT7 (@ot7) Unfortunately for Newton and Smith, neither of their teams ended up hoisting the trophy. That honor belonged to Lo-PROspects, who are now the two-time champions of the event. Follow @ThePanthersWire on Twitter/X for more Panthers content.

Cam Newton slams Shedeur Sanders over reckless speeding, warns NFL rookies of life-threatening choices
Cam Newton has strongly criticized Shedeur Sanders for his recent speeding violations (Getty Images & Associative Press) Former NFL MVP Cam Newton didn't hold back when addressing Shedeur Sanders' recent string of speeding violations. Sanders, the Cleveland Browns' rookie quarterback, received two tickets in June—first for driving 91 mph in a 65 mph zone, and then, shockingly, just days later for going 101 mph in a 60 mph zone. The second violation reportedly happened during rookie orientation, drawing even more scrutiny. Cam Newton speaks from experience as he blasts Shedeur Sanders for dangerous driving Sanders owned up to his actions, admitting, 'I made some not great choices. I learn from them.' But Newton, on his 4th & 1 podcast, went further—calling the behavior reckless and addressing it as a serious cautionary tale for all young athletes. 'You can't pay your way out when the Grim Reaper shows up' — Newton's emotional warning — 4thand1show (@4thand1show) Newton's concern wasn't performative. He shared his own harrowing story of being involved in a car crash earlier this year, which shook him deeply. 'Driving a hundred? I've done that, bro,' Newton admitted. 'Going 101? That's extremely dangerous. You can't pay your way when you're trying to negotiate with the Grim Reaper.' Speaking directly to young players like Shedeur, he emphasized the value of life over luxury: 'I see a Rolls Royce, I see a Ferrari, I see a Bentley… but right now, I don't value those things. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Couple Decide To Go On A Diet, Here They Are A Year Later Daily Sport X Undo I value being able to say that I'm putting my children in position to never have to depend on football the way I needed to.' Shilo Sanders trolls his brother as fans split over reaction Adding a lighter twist to a serious situation, Shedeur's brother, Shilo Sanders, poked fun at the incident in a vlog filmed in Tampa: 'We gotta be careful crossing the street, especially if Shedeur is out here.' Shedeur laughed it off during a Twitch stream, saying, 'The situation wasn't funny, but how he said it was.' Despite the controversies, the Browns are handling the matter internally and have not issued any formal penalties. Shedeur's reps and depth chart status remain unchanged—for now.
