As soon as Cam Newton made it clear that he doesn't consider Jalen Hurts a top 10 quarterback, he braced for the potential response coming his way from Philadelphia Eagles fans.
"I know everybody is going to get mad at this," Newton said on '4th & 1 with Cam Newton.' "Cam is hating on Jalen Hurts," he said in a mocking tone.
The former Carolina Panthers quarterback went on to explain his reasoning behind his personal ranking, which doesn't favor the Super Bowl MVP.
"It's hard for me to grade Jalen Hurts with the talent that he has around him," Newton explained.
"Jalen Hurts is a great quarterback, but if we're talking about what they bring to the table, it's hard to judge what Jalen Hurts can do when you're throwing to a guy like AJ Brown, DeVonta Smith, you have tight end skillset, you have a dominant defense, the best running back in the game. Newton's argument is far from out of the box. Since the Eagles have stacked their offense with talented weapons, Hurts has had a hard time escaping the narrative that he's just a product of the guys around him. The Eagles' passer falls under the "system quarterback" category, which is often used to discredit certain QBs.
When Newton looks at some of his top picks for the quarterback position, he considers players like Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen elite. The primary argument was that Jackson and Allen have to rise above and play at an elite level just to get their teams to win. The former MVP doesn't believe Hurts needs to do that.

Cam Newton #1 of the Carolina Panthers during their game against the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium on November 28, 2021 in Miami Gardens, Florida."Jalen Hurts does not have to play elite for the Philadelphia Eagles to win," he said. "He has to play good—but he doesn't have to play elite. We're not asking you to win the game, we're just asking you not to lose it."
Despite the negative narratives that frequently float around Hurts, the Eagles' quarterback has a very impressive resume at 26 years old. Since entering the NFL as a second-round pick out of Oklahoma, Hurts has spent the last four seasons as a full-time starter for the Eagles.
From an individual standpoint, Hurts' best season was in 2022. He passed for 3,701 yards, 22 touchdowns, and six interceptions. He rushed 165 times for 760 yards and 13 touchdowns. Hurts was an MVP candidate, but a late-season injury affected his standing.
In 2024, the Eagles dialed up a heavy dose of Saquon Barkley, which left Hurts throwing the ball for under 400 attempts for the first time since his rookie season. Although he threw for just 2,903 yards and 18 touchdowns in 15 games, Hurts had his most accurate season, posting his career-high passer rating at 103.7
When the playoffs came around, Hurts helped lead the Eagles to Super Bowl LIX, where they defeated the Kansas City Chiefs. Hurts was the game's MVP.
With two NFC Championship wins, a Super Bowl victory, Super Bowl MVP, two All-Pros, and two Pro Bowls, Hurts has a pretty decorated resume five years in. Yet, many arguments have been made to keep him out of the top 10 QBs who are currently active.

Kendrick Perkins predicts that Luka Doncic will win the MVP next season: "This is the type of commitment that I wanna see from a great player"

Kendrick Perkins predicts that Luka Doncic will win the MVP next season: "This is the type of commitment that I wanna see from a great player" originally appeared on Basketball Network. Kendrick Perkins has seen the Luka Doncic situation before. Great, young players often bump into adversity, but, more often than not, they emerge stronger than ever before. With this in mind, the former NBA center implores the Los Angeles Lakers faithful to see how everything plays out with the Slovenian star before worrying about the future. "Look, this has accountability and disrespect all over it and Luka took it into the offseason," Perk said on ESPN's "NBA Today." "I know it's early for hot takes, but damn it, I'm going out on a limb early in this summertime and I'm gonna say I'm betting on Luka Doncic to win the MVP next season. This is the type of commitment that I wanna see from a great player like Luka." Doncic was criticized last season for being out of shape. Dallas Mavericks General Manager Nico Harrison reportedly alluded to his conditioning as the primary reason they traded him to the Purple and Gold. Responding to the criticism, Luka apparently took his offseason regimen more seriously. He appeared to have slimmed down to a more ideal playing weight, showing, according to Perkins, that he has taken accountability for his actions. Same old, same old? Landscape's David Dennis, Jr. joined Perkins, Dave McMenamin and Jorge Sedano in the discussion. However, like the Yin to Perk's Yang, the senior writer is not convinced Luka's new-look physique would make much of a difference. "We're supposed to be talking about this guy who needs to be an MVP-type of dude and we're celebrating the fact that he looks like he's in shape?" Dennis Jr. asked rhetorically. "The bar should be way higher than that for somebody of Luka Doncic's caliber. You have to be one of the top three players in the league for the Lakers not to be bounced in the first round." Dennis Jr. also opened up an old wound, poking at the same issues and questions many have for Doncic. "By the way," Dennis Jr. adds, "A lot of people who are in shape are still bad on defense. Being in shape doesn't stop you from falling asleep on back screens or being left on an island come playoff time.""This isn't something new" Matching his fellow guest's debate show energy, a visibly irritated Perkins attempted to straighten out Dennis, Jr. by pointing to history. For the former Boston Celtics and OKC Thunder big man, everything Doncic is dealing with now is just part of the usual path for elite players. Perkins pointed out the adjustments and adversity of past and present greats. Michael Jordan had to absorb the bumps and bruises from the Detroit Pistons, Giannis Antetokounmpo had to fill up his thin frame and Nikola Jokic had to get in shape to reach the pinnacle. "This is nothing new. Young players that hit the ground running when they come into the league, they hit their head on the wall every now and then. Then all of a sudden, they have to bounce back," Perkins answered Dennis Jr.'s argument. Of course, Luka hasn't been to the mountaintop yet. All talk of him having a bounce-back season and leading the Lakers to contender status remains wishful thinking. Still, if history is any indication, players with Luka's skill and drive rarely stay down for long. The league has seen this before — stars facing scrutiny, growing pains and doubt, only to come back sharper and more determined. Doncic may not be there yet, but his response this summer suggests he's heading in that story was originally reported by Basketball Network on Jul 24, 2025, where it first appeared.

Eagles email survey to season-ticket holders about new stadium, renovations at Lincoln Financial Field

In an email to season-ticket holders on Thursday, the Philadelphia Eagles sent a survey about potential renovations to Lincoln Financial Field or the possibility of a brand new stadium. "As we look to the future, we're committed to delivering the best-in-class gameday experience for Philadelphia Eagles fans," the email read. "To help guide this vision, we're exploring potential updates to Lincoln Financial Field — including both renovation options and the possibility of a brand new stadium in the region." The Eagles' lease with the city is set to expire in 2032. The survey sent to fans comes as Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie expressed potential interest in bringing a Super Bowl to Philadelphia, but that would require adding a retractable roof to the stadium. "I don't have a strong opinion on it, because you're torn," Lurie told CBS Sports at Super Bowl media night earlier this year. "I love outdoor football. I love it. I love the cold games. I like the hot games. I like the snow games. On the other hand, Philadelphia deserves to host the Super Bowl, NCAA Final Four, and lots of great events. It's an incredible sports city, so yes, you got to balance all those things." The Linc opened in 2003, and the 2025 season will be the 23rd football season at the stadium. In that span, the Birds have gone to four Super Bowls and won two. The Eagles have done renovations to the Linc since opening, but they would need a roof to host an event like the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl hasn't been hosted in an open-air stadium with cold weather since it was at MetLife Stadium in 2014. The Linc recently hosted the FIFA Club World Cup and will host the World Cup in 2026, and the city will host other events like NCAA Tournament games and the 2026 MLB All-Star Game. The South Philly Sports Complex is set to undergo a makeover over the next several years and that could include a new Eagles stadium if the team decides to go that route. Earlier this year, the Flyers and Sixers announced they would open a new shared arena to replace the Wells Fargo Center. The Sixers had initially pushed to build a new arena in Center City, but the deal fell through. In the last 10 years, four NFL teams — the Las Vegas Raiders, Los Angeles Rams, Atlanta Falcons and Minnesota Vikings — have all opened new stadiums. Each of them are either a dome or have a retractable roof. Philadelphia's NFC East rival, the Washington Commanders, is also working to build a new stadium.

A'ja Wilson Makes WNBA History vs Indiana Fever

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Some believe Las Vegas Aces star A'ja Wilson to be the best player in the WNBA today, and her professional accolades seem to back that up. A seven-time All-Star, a four-time All-WNBA first-team selection, a three-time league MVP, two-time WNBA champion, two-time Defensive Player of the Year, and WNBA Finals MVP, Wilson has a resume that's second-to-none. And despite the Aces falling to .500 with an 80-70 loss to the Indiana Fever on Thursday, Wilson still played like the best player on the court. The 28-year-old center scored a team-high 20 points along with six rebounds, three steals, two assists, and a block — and she wrote her name in the WNBA record books as well. Her next 20-point game will give her sole possession of the record. Wilson is tied with Los Angeles Sparks guard Kelsey Plum for the third-most 20-point games this season behind Minnesota Lynx forward Napheesa Collier (16) and Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell (14). Wilson's feat is just the latest in a long list of records and notable accomplishments in her career. This year, she became the fastest player in WNBA history to reach 5,000 career points, and she became just the second player ever to be a unanimous MVP selection.
