Agustín Ramírezs 2-run single in 8th lifts Marlins to 4-2 win over Brewers

MIAMI (AP) — Rookie Agustín Ramírez hit a tiebreaking, two-run single in the eighth inning and the Miami Marlins beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-2 on Saturday. Kyle Stowers homered and Ronny Henríquez (5-1) pitched two perfect innings of relief for the Marlins. Milwaukee reliever Jared Koenig entered with the bases loaded and no outs in the eighth and fanned Connor Norby. He then got Otto López to hit into a force play at home before Ramírez hit a two-strike line drive to left that scored Javier Sanoja and Xavier Edwards. Ramírez has 37 RBIs, which leads NL rookies. Dane Myers and Sanoja hit singles against Brewers reliever Nick Mears (1-2) to start the eighth. Edwards then reached on a single when his bunt rolled fair inside the third-base line. The Brewers tied it at 2-all on Isaac Collins' run-scoring single in the fourth. Rhys Hoskins hit an RBI triple in the second to put Milwaukee ahead before Stowers' solo homer and Liam Hicks' run-scoring double in the bottom half gave Miami the lead. Hoskins left in the fifth because of left thumb discomfort. The first baseman stepped off the bag and caught shortstop Joey Ortiz's errant throw to tag Eric Wagaman out in the fourth. Brewers starter Chad Patrick allowed two runs in five innings. Marlins starter Cal Quantrill gave up two runs and six hits over 3 2/3 innings. After Hicks' go-ahead double with one out in the second, Patrick prevented the Marlins from expanding the lead by retiring Myers on a shallow fly ball and Sanoja on a grounder. Stowers' second-inning longball was his team-high 16th of the season and had an exit velocity of 112.4 mph, the hardest-hit homer of his career. RHP Brandon Woodruff will make his season debut when he starts for the Brewers on Sunday against Marlins RHP Edward Cabrera (3-2, 3.41).

Dodgers strive to continue strong run vs. last-place White Sox

(Photo credit: Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images) Tied for the best record in the major leagues, the Los Angeles Dodgers are set to play host for a three-game series against the worst team in the American League when the Chicago White Sox pay a visit starting Tuesday. The Dodgers just breezed through a road trip to Colorado and Kansas City, compiling a 5-1 record that included a 5-1 victory over the Royals on Sunday. They received home runs from Enrique Hernandez and Will Smith in the trek's finale, along with six strong innings from emerging left-hander Justin Wrobleski. The Dodgers now turn to more of a known commodity, Yoshinobu Yamamoto (7-6, 2.61 ERA). The right-hander was not at his best in June, but he did put in five shutout innings at Colorado on Wednesday for his first win since May 26. Yamamoto has never faced the White Sox. After playing a rugged stretch of division opponents in mid-June, going 7-3 against the San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants, the Dodgers have been facing teams further down in the overall standings. The visit from the White Sox comes after Los Angeles went 7-2 in a stretch against the Washington Nationals, Rockies and Royals. 'I just think that regardless of opponent, we just focus on playing good baseball, and I think that's what we've done for quite some time,' Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. 'It's kind of what we do.' Dodgers backup infielder Miguel Rojas left the Sunday game with a jammed ring finger on his left hand. Chicago arrives in Los Angeles for just the second time since 2017. The White Sox just did the Dodgers a favor, winning two of three at home against the Giants, including a 5-2 victory on Sunday when they rallied for four runs in the seventh inning. Rookie catcher Kyle Teel had a two-run double in the late uprising and finished with his second three-hit game in five days. Teel is batting .319 in 16 games since making his major league debut June 6. 'A lot of confidence going on in the clubhouse,' Teel said. 'Since I've been here, I've seen that. We have a gritty team.' The White Sox have won two of their past three series, having taken two of three at Toronto from June 20-22. It was their first series win on the road since May 13-15 at Cincinnati. However, they have just two victories over the Dodgers over the past 13 games between the teams. Going back further, Chicago won two of three in Los Angeles during the 2014 season. The series will be a reunion of sorts. Dodgers right-handed reliever Michael Kopech is set to face his former team, while White Sox infielder Miguel Vargas will square off against old friends. Vargas is batting .229 with career highs of 10 home runs and 34 RBIs in 81 games. However, he is just 1-for-21 with nine strikeouts over his past six games. Chicago right-hander Shane Smith (3-5, 3.38 ERA) will start the series opener. The 25-year-old rookie was rocked in his past two starts, permitting a combined 11 runs (10 earned) on 10 hits and five walks in 7 1/3 innings. Shane Smith will be opposing the Dodgers for the first time. --Field Level Media

Tracy Cortez 'grew a ton' from Rose Namajunas loss, excited to show evolution at UFC 317

Defeat can be painful, but often times, it's a necessary hardship for growth. Tracy Cortez, a contender in the UFC women's flyweight division, feels she's a testament of that and is thankful for her loss to former UFC champion Rose Namajunas in July 2024. Nearly one year later, Cortez (11-2 MMA, 5-1 UFC) makes a return this Saturday against veteran Viviane Araujo (13-6 MMA, 7-5 UFC) at UFC 317 from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+). Cortez, 31, didn't enjoy losing a decision to Namajunas, but did enjoy the evolution that came with it, and she can't wait to show it in her return. "I was obviously bothered that I lost, but I did feel like I learned a lot from that fight," Cortez told MMA Junkie in Spanish. "I learned a lot. I knew that I had good cardio, I'm well-conditioned, but I had never been in a five rounder. I remember telling my coaches, 'Hey, I can fight another round.' I had a lot more inside of me to give. So I learned a lot from that fight, and above all else, I feel like I grew. I grew a ton as a person and fighter. "I can be very harsh on myself. I try to be positive, but it's hard because as an athlete who's competing, you never want to lose. I applied everything I learned from my last fight to this camp and I feel 100 percent right now." Cortez was undefeated in the octagon prior to Namajunas. She was also on an 11-fight winning streak dating back to a lone stumble in her 2017 professional debut. Given her popularity, top 10 ranking in the UFC and record, Cortez doesn't view the short-notice defeat to Namajunas as a significant setback. She said two more wins after Araujo on Saturday, and she's in title contention. "I honestly think that after winning this one, maybe one or two fights, I'm ready to fight for the title," Cortez said. "There's obviously a lot of people in front of me who already deserve the title fight, and have been competing for a long time, but all in due time. I know it's close, it's not that far."
