Tied for the best record in the major leagues, the Los Angeles Dodgers are set to play host for a three-game series against the worst team in the American League when the Chicago White Sox pay a visit starting Tuesday.
The Dodgers just breezed through a road trip to Colorado and Kansas City, compiling a 5-1 record that included a 5-1 victory over the Royals on Sunday. They received home runs from Enrique Hernandez and Will Smith in the trek's finale, along with six strong innings from emerging left-hander Justin Wrobleski.
The Dodgers now turn to more of a known commodity, Yoshinobu Yamamoto (7-6, 2.61 ERA). The right-hander was not at his best in June, but he did put in five shutout innings at Colorado on Wednesday for his first win since May 26. Yamamoto has never faced the White Sox.
After playing a rugged stretch of division opponents in mid-June, going 7-3 against the San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants, the Dodgers have been facing teams further down in the overall standings.
The visit from the White Sox comes after Los Angeles went 7-2 in a stretch against the Washington Nationals, Rockies and Royals.
'I just think that regardless of opponent, we just focus on playing good baseball, and I think that's what we've done for quite some time,' Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. 'It's kind of what we do.'
Dodgers backup infielder Miguel Rojas left the Sunday game with a jammed ring finger on his left hand.
Chicago arrives in Los Angeles for just the second time since 2017.
The White Sox just did the Dodgers a favor, winning two of three at home against the Giants, including a 5-2 victory on Sunday when they rallied for four runs in the seventh inning.
Rookie catcher Kyle Teel had a two-run double in the late uprising and finished with his second three-hit game in five days. Teel is batting .319 in 16 games since making his major league debut June 6.
'A lot of confidence going on in the clubhouse,' Teel said. 'Since I've been here, I've seen that. We have a gritty team.'
The White Sox have won two of their past three series, having taken two of three at Toronto from June 20-22. It was their first series win on the road since May 13-15 at Cincinnati.
However, they have just two victories over the Dodgers over the past 13 games between the teams. Going back further, Chicago won two of three in Los Angeles during the 2014 season.
The series will be a reunion of sorts. Dodgers right-handed reliever Michael Kopech is set to face his former team, while White Sox infielder Miguel Vargas will square off against old friends.
Vargas is batting .229 with career highs of 10 home runs and 34 RBIs in 81 games. However, he is just 1-for-21 with nine strikeouts over his past six games.
Chicago right-hander Shane Smith (3-5, 3.38 ERA) will start the series opener. The 25-year-old rookie was rocked in his past two starts, permitting a combined 11 runs (10 earned) on 10 hits and five walks in 7 1/3 innings.
Shane Smith will be opposing the Dodgers for the first time.

Red Sox, Cubs hope to carry momentum into second half of season

(Photo credit: Matt Marton-Imagn Images) A pair of teams eager to resume play will kick off the second half of the regular season on Friday afternoon, when the Chicago Cubs host the Boston Red Sox. Chicago is on pace to finish with its most wins since its 2016 World Series championship season (103) and return to postseason play for the first time since 2020. The Cubs won eight of 12 games entering the All-Star break and sit a half-game back of the Los Angeles Dodgers for the National League's best record. With a pair of 25-homer sluggers in Pete Crow-Armstrong and Seiya Suzuki spearheading the powerful lineup, the Cubs appear to be on track for a special end to the summer. 'Our job is to just keep winning. It's as simple as that,' Cubs manager Craig Counsell said. 'There's so much season left. Just keep winning. Stack up wins and we're going to be in a good position.' After a six-game road trip capped the first half of the season, Chicago returns to Wrigley Field on Friday, where the club has gone 30-16. Veteran right-hander Colin Rea (7-3, 3.91 ERA) gets the start and will look to extend his personal winning streak to four games. Since his last loss against the Seattle Mariners on June 22, Rea has allowed just four runs in 18 2/3 innings. The 35-year-old surrendered one run in seven innings last time out in an 8-1 victory over the host Minnesota Twins. In his only career start against Boston, Rea gave up two runs in 5 2/3 innings in a 6-3 victory as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers in May 2024. Nobody in baseball entered the break as hot as the Boston Red Sox, who have won 10 straight games and catapulted themselves into the American League postseason picture. Following a July 2 loss to the Cincinnati Reds, Boston swept the Washington Nationals, Colorado Rockies and the Tampa Bay Rays to pull within three games of the AL East-leading Toronto Blue Jays and just a game back of the second-place New York Yankees. A win on Friday would match the ninth-longest winning streak in franchise history, which was last accomplished in September 2016. 'We've still got a long way to go,' Boston manager Alex Cora said. 'We're happy with this stretch, we're happy with how we've been playing. I think we've only had one bad series the last few weeks, so we're playing well.' Lucas Giolito (6-1, 3.36) will make his 14th start of the season for the Red Sox on Friday. Like his counterpart in Rea, Giolito has won three consecutive starts. Since allowing seven runs in less than two innings against the Los Angeles Angels on June 4, Giolito has gone 5-0 with a 0.70 ERA and 37 strikeouts in six starts. The 31-year-old right-hander will hope to fare better against the Cubs, as he's 2-3 with a 7.86 ERA with 32 strikeouts in 26 1/3 innings over five career starts against the club.

Canada's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander wins best male athlete award at ESPYS

Social Sharing NBA Finals MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Olympic champion gymnast Simone Biles won as best male and female athletes at the ESPYS on Wednesday night in Los Angeles. Gilgeous-Alexander, of Hamilton, Ont., led the Oklahoma City Thunder to the NBA championship last month while piling up hardware as league MVP and scoring champion. "It's a dream come true and for dreams to come true it takes a village," he said, thanking his wife, parents, brother and others. "Those names probably don't mean much but to me they mean everything." She won three golds and a silver while helping the U.S. win its first team title since 2016. "That was very unexpected, especially in a category of all men," Biles said after kissing her husband, Chicago Bears safety Jonathan Owens. She beat out Stephen Curry, Freddie Freeman, and Rory McIlroy. Biles' Olympic teammate, Suni Lee, won the best comeback award for overcoming two rare kidney diseases. She brought one of her doctors to the show. Robertson presented with Arthur Ashe Award for Courage Basketball Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson accepted the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage from point guard Russell Westbrook. Robertson was president of the NBA Players' Association at the time of a landmark antitrust lawsuit against the NBA in 1970. It led to an extensive reform of the league's strict free agency and draft rules and eventually to higher salaries for all players. The 86-year-old Robertson, a 12-time All Star known as The Big O during his career, was the first Black president of any sports labour union. "I knew there was work to do. There was a desperate need for players to have more career security, improved working conditions and other accommodations," he said. "In life, it's important to be persistent or as I have been called stubborn. Stubborn about what you believe in." Shane Gillis draws mixed reactions Comedian Shane Gillis's opening monologue as host of the show that honours the past year's top athletes and sports moments went over awkwardly. Early on, he called out various famous faces in the Dolby Theatre crowd, including retired WNBA star Diana Taurasi. Gillis said, "Give it up for her" after calling her "Deanna." The camera showed an unsmiling Taurasi shaking her head. Gillis quickly caught his mistake, saying, "My bad on that." Gillis moved on to WNBA superstar Caitlin Clark, who wasn't on hand. "When Caitlin Clark retires from the WNBA, she's going to work at a Waffle House so she can continue doing what she loves most: fist fighting Black women," he joked. While some in the audience laughed, others appeared uncomfortable. Gillis plowed on for 10 minutes, with jokes about President Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein, whose sex trafficking investigation has roiled the Justice Department and FBI. Gillis' performance drew mixed reviews on social media, with some calling him "hilarious" and others "cringey." Taurasi, Morgan share Icon Award Taurasi and retired U.S. national women's soccer team star Alex Morgan shared the Icon Award in recognition of their careers and major impact on sports. The women touched their trophies together in a toast. "Our mission has always been very similar," Morgan said. "We fought to leave our game in a better place than where we found it just as a generation before us did. We're standing on the shoulders of giants." Taurasi, who retired in February after a 20-year basketball career, mentioned her parents who immigrated to the U.S. from Argentina. She also had words for the next generation. "Keep going, don't wait for someone to hand you anything, outwork them, be loyal, bring that damn fire every day," she said. "We're proof you can do it. We did it our way. No shortcuts, no apologies, and no regrets."

West Indies' Andre Russell retiring from internationals after Australia T20s

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — West Indies allrounder Andre Russell is retiring from international cricket after the two Twenty20s against Australia at his Sabina Park home ground. The games are on Sunday and Tuesday. Russell has played 84 T20s since 2011 and was a World Cup champion in 2012 and 2016. He's passed up a chance to play at a sixth T20 World Cup in eight months in India. Cricket West Indies said the 37-year-old Russell 'remains a high-impact player and was selected on merit.' 'To represent the West Indies has been one of the proudest achievements in my life,' Russell said. 'When I was a kid, I did not expect to get to this level, but the more you start to play and get to love the sport, you realise what you can achieve. This inspired me to become better because I wanted to leave a mark in the maroon colours and become an inspiration to others.' Daren Sammy was Russell's captain at both World Cup triumphs and has become his national coach. 'Andre has always been the consummate professional and a fierce competitor,' Sammy said. 'Whether I was captaining him or now coaching him, his hunger to perform and win for West Indies has never wavered. I wish him all the best on his next chapter, and I hope he continues to inspire generations to come.' Russell began his international career at age 22 with his sole test in 2010 against Sri Lanka. He played his 56th and last one-day international at the 2019 World Cup. He was a controversial selection as he'd played only one ODI since 2015 following a doping ban and knee injury. But he became the fastest player, in terms of balls played, to 1,000 ODI runs. Since then he's become a T20 great, sought by franchises all over the world. This month he was playing for Los Angeles in Major League Cricket. Russell will be replaced by Matthew Forde for the three T20s in St. Kitts and Nevis against Australia. ___ AP cricket:
