Michelin-star meals headed to space
When French astronaut Sophie Adenot arrives at the International Space Station (ISS) in 2026, she will dine on French gastronomical classics such as lobster bisque, foie gras and onion soup prepared especially for her by a chef with 10 Michelin stars, reports AFP. Parsnip and haddock veloute, chicken with tonka beans and creamy polenta, and a chocolate cream with hazelnut cazette flower will also be on the menu, the European Space Agency (ESA) said on Wednesday. Food delivered to the ISS must meet strict specifications. It cannot be crumbly or too heavy and must be able to be stored for two years, the ESA said in a statement. Fresh fruit and vegetables are only available after a new spacecraft arrives from Earth with supplies. So most meals in space are canned, vacuum-packed or freeze-dried from a set of options provided by space agencies. But to spice things up, one out of every 10 meals is prepared for specific crew members according to their personal tastes. "During a mission, sharing our respective dishes is a way of inviting crewmates to learn more about our culture. It's a very powerful bonding experience," Adenot said in the statement. Adenot's menu was developed by French chef Anne-Sophie Pic, who holds a total of 10 Michelin stars and was named best female chef by The World's 50 Best Restaurants in 2011. Pic said it was an "exhilarating challenge" to develop the menu, which includes four starters, two mains and two desserts. Adenot, a 42-year-old former helicopter test pilot, is scheduled to arrive for her first tour aboard the ISS in 2026. A pair of NASA astronauts returned to Earth in March after being unexpectedly stuck on the ISS for more than nine months after problems with Boeing's Starliner spacecraft.

Sanrio has announced its 2025 character ranking results
Sanrio announced on Sunday June 29 the results of its 2025 character ranking, which racked up over 63 million votes worldwide. Compared with 2024's results, this year saw Pompompurin leap from fourth place to snatch the crown with just over 5.6 million votes. Previous champion Cinnamoroll dropped to second place with 5.4 million votes, and Pochacco also saw a dip in popularity, slipping from second to third place to earn 3.9 million votes. But what about the iconic Hello Kitty? With 3.3 million votes, she hasn't budged from last year's position of fifth place, and actually hasn't even managed to crack the Top 3 since taking the crown in 2019. (The lack of votes hasn't stopped Kitty from getting her own airport though, so we reckon she's doing just fine.) This year's Top Ten characters are: 1. Pompompurin 2. Cinnamoroll 3. Pochacco 4. Kuromi 5. Hello Kitty 6. My Melody 7. Little Twin Stars 8. Hangyodon 9. Tuxedosam 10. Ahirunopekkle See the full ranking of all 90 characters here. 3 Tokyo restaurants named in the World's 50 Best Restaurants 2025 list

Odette is No 25 on World's 50 Best Restaurants list; top spot goes to Maido in Peru
THREE-Michelin-starred Odette continues to be Singapore's only entrant in The World's 50 Best Restaurants 2025 list, despite slipping one rung to 25th position. Announced in a star-studded ceremony in Turin, Italy on Jun 19, the annual ranking of top restaurants around the world saw Odette joining Asian counterparts such as Gaggan (Bangkok), Wing (Hong Kong) and Potong (Bangkok). Taking the top spot this year was Maido from Lima, a Peruvian-Japanese restaurant run by Mitsuhara Tsumura, which jumped from No 5 last year. Following it was Asador Etxebarri at No 2, unchanged from 2024. Mexico's Quintonil, Madrid's Diverxo and Copenhagen's Alchemist rounded out the top five spots. Bangkok was the top performing city, beating the likes of Tokyo and Paris with six restaurants in the list. Gaggan clocked in at No 6, up from No 9 the previous year, followed by Potong (13), Sorn (17), Suhring (22), Le Du (30), and Nusara (35). All were promoted from their positions last year, with Potong named Highest New Entry after jumping from No 57 place in 2024. Gaggan was also crowned No 1 in the Asia's 50 Best Restaurants ranking in March this year in Seoul. Seoul had only one representative in Mingles, the three-Michelin-starred restaurant helmed by veteran chef Kang Mingoo. Taking the No 29 spot, it rose from No 44. In Tokyo, Sezanne rose to No 7 followed by Narisawa at No 21 and Florilege at No 36. Osaka's La Cime stood at No 44. From Hong Kong, Wing took No 11 spot and The Chairman at No 19, with both rising several rungs from last year. Julien Royer, chef-owner of Odette which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, said: 'It is an honour to once again be recognised amongst some of the finest restaurants around the world.' He added: 'Regardless of the placing, the entire team at Odette is immensely proud of what they've accomplished over the years. Representing Singapore on the world's culinary stage is, and has always been, an absolute honour for everyone.' Despite Odette being the sole Singapore restaurant in the Best 50 list, the country also had a presence in the 51-100 ranking which was announced earlier in June. One Michelin-starred Burnt Ends was at No 93, having slipped from No.68 in 2024. Fellow one-starred Labyrinth also managed to stay on the list at No 97, down from No 92. The World's 50 Best Restaurants List is produced by UK media company William Reed, and has been a mainstay of the international restaurant industry since 2002. The rankings are decided in a voting process involving 1,120 industry professionals including restaurant owners and food journalists from around the world.

Why Asia's best restaurant, Gaggan in Bangkok, is about more than flavours
For those who love experiential dining, Gaggan Anand is well known. Advertisement The innovative chef's eponymous restaurant in Bangkok, with its unconventional approach to fine dining, had a year-long waiting list at one point. It recently made the headlines for achieving the top spot in Asia's 50 Best Restaurants for the fifth time since 2015. Anand, born in Kolkata, India, not only put the Thai capital on the progressive dining map, he also pushed the boundaries of Indian cuisine and its perception around the world. The chef was featured in the second season of Netflix's Chef's Table in 2018. Anand's journey began in hotel kitchens in India before he moved to Thailand in 2007, where he was appointed executive chef of Red, an Indian fine-dining restaurant in Bangkok. Having learned boundary-breaking techniques from Adria, known as the father of molecular gastronomy , Anand brought them to Bangkok upon his return. Advertisement He launched Gaggan in 2010, and described it as a laboratory for his radical culinary reinventions. In the space of a few years, his 25-course emoji menu – where each course was defined not by a name but by one of the tiny pictograms – featuring dishes such as Lick It Up, which required diners to eat with their tongues, propelled the restaurant to number one on Asia's 50 Best Restaurants list and earned it two Michelin stars.
