'Adolescence' star Owen Cooper earns Emmy nod as youngest in limited series supporting actor race

"Adolescence" star Owen Cooper has officially made Emmys history. Nominations for the 77th Emmy Awards were announced Tuesday, with 15-year-old Owen earning a nod for outstanding supporting actor in a limited/anthology series or TV movie, making him the youngest nominee in the history of the category, according to a press release. The record was previously held by Scott Jacoby, who was 16 when he was nominated for the 1972 TV movie "That Certain Summer," the Television Academy confirmed to "Good Morning America." In "Adolescence," Owen plays 13-year-old Jamie Miller, whose world is turned upside down when he is arrested for the murder of a teenage girl named Katie, a fellow student at his school. The four-part U.K. drama series also explores the loss of adolescence and the complexities of youth. On the heels of its release, the British government backed an initiative to make the show available in all secondary schools across the U.K. Stephen Graham, who is a co-writer of the series and plays Eddie Miller, Jamie's dad, said that while "Adolescence" isn't based on a true story, it is inspired by several real-life incidents that happened among youth in the U.K., specifically several incidents that involved the stabbing of teen girls. Graham received an Emmy nomination on Tuesday for lead actor in a limited or anthology series or movie. "Adolescence" was also nominated for outstanding limited or anthology series. In total, the show received 13 nominations.

Kathy Bates Becomes Oldest Best Drama Actress Emmy Nominee

Kathy Bates has just become the oldest nominee for best drama actress for the 2025 Emmys at the age of 77. Bates was nominated for her role as Madeline 'Matty' Matlock on the CBS revival of the legal drama Matlock, which debuted on Oct. 17, 2024. Nominations for the 77th Emmy Awards were presented by Harvey Guillén and Brenda Song at a ceremony held on Tuesday, July 15. Also nominated in the Emmy category of best lead actress in a drama series are Sharon Horgan for Bad Sisters, Britt Lower for Severance, Bella Ramsey for The Last of Us and Keri Russell for The Diplomat. More from The Hollywood Reporter Emmy Awards: Nominations List (Updating Live) 2025 Emmy Nominations: Watch the Livestream Emmys: 'Daily Show,' 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!,' 'Late Show' Nominated in Shrunken Talk Series Field Upon the series premiere of Matlock last year, Bates told The Hollywood Reporter that she wasn't looking to take on a lead role in a TV show when the opportunity to portray the wealthy retired lawyer who returns to the workforce under false pretenses came to her. In fact, she was leaning toward the opposite. 'Quite frankly, I was thinking about going into semi-retirement, and just waiting to see what came along that I might like to do,' she confessed. 'So this came as a total surprise to me, and continues to be because of the latest numbers that we've gotten.' Matlock, developed by Jennie Snyder Urman, brought in 7.73 million viewers for its debut, the largest series premiere audience for a CBS show in more than five years since The Code followed an episode of NCIS in April 2019. 'I just feel so lucky to have such a strong foundation behind us and the show,' Bates added. 'I know everyone says that when they're marketing a show, but this is really unlike anything I've ever experienced. I really can't believe all this, especially at my age.' The 77th Emmy Awards will be hosted by Nate Bargatze and broadcast live Sunday, Sept. 14, (8-11 p.m. ET/5-8 p.m. PT) on the CBS Television Network and available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+.* See the full list of nominees here. Severance, The Last of Us and Andor just nabbed dozens of Emmy nominations

The nominations for the 77th Emmy Awards just dropped and, unsurprisingly, Apple TV+'s Severance led the pack with a whopping 27, including Best Drama. The streamer has another bona-fide hit with the Seth Rogen-led The Studio , which captured 23 nominations. However, HBO Max received the most kudos by platform, with 142 nominations in total. This is thanks to the second season of The Last of Us , with 16 nominations, and the Batman-adjacent The Penguin . The White Lotus, The Pitt and Hacks also grabbed multiple nominations. This is the highest number of noms the outlet has ever received. Netflix still holds the record, though, with 160 nominations in 2020. Andor scored 14 nominations, including one for Best Drama. Star Wars shows aren't typically singled out for the high-profile awards, though the first season of Andor was also up for Best Drama, before losing to Succession . No actors from the series were nominated, which is a bummer given the performances by Diego Luna, Denise Gough, Elizabeth Dulau and Stellan Skarsgård, among others. There was a day when sci-fi programs only received nominations for stuff involving costumes or sets. That sure has changed, with Andor , The Last of Us , Severance, Paradise and Black Mirror receiving so much love this year. Fallout also made an impressive showing last year . The 77th Emmy Awards will be hosted by comedian Nate Bargatze and is airing live on CBS on September 14 at 8PM ET. Cord cutters will be able to stream it live and on-demand via Paramount+.

5 stunning 2025 Emmy snubs, including 'Andor' and 'The Pitt'

The nominees for the 77th Emmy Awards were announced Tuesday morning with great fanfare as always. There were so many shows like The Studio, The White Lotus, Severance and Shrinking leading the way who were shouted out. Although there are plenty of great shows and actors being recognized this year, there are, of course, several obvious snubs as well who were left out but who deserved a nod in the first place. Here are some of the more dramatic snubs of this television award season, and there are plenty more who we didn't mention who are being argued about online. The Cast of Andor I'm not sure what is going on here, but no acting nominations for the cast of arguably the best show of the year is nothing short of criminal. Diego Luna's turn as the titular Cassian Andor should have gotten a best actor nod for drama, and the duo of Stellan Skarsgård (Luthen Rael) and Elizabeth Dulau (Freya) were robbed for their emotional performances. You could even make an argument for Denise Gough (Dedra Meero), Kyle Soller (Syril Karn) and Genevieve O'Reilly (Mon Mothma) over several of the The White Lotus nominees. What a disappointment. Selena Gomez and Steve Martin Only Martin Short got a nomination this year for Only Murders in the Building, leaving co-stars Selena Gomez and Steve Martin in the dust. With the addition of shows like Nobody Wants This, The Residence and The Studio this award cycle, it was going to get tougher to get both Martins AND Gomez in, but it's tough to see regardless. Poker Face The Natasha Lyonne-led comedy didn't get a single nomination, in either best comedy show or best comedy actress for Lyonne. The Peacock comedy is wildly popular, so omitting it is a surprise by the voters. The Pitt I know there are limited spaces in supporting spots for a drama, but how can we legitimately have 11 of the 14 supporting spots go to Severance and The White Lotus? Voters awarded just about everyone who appeared on screen in The White Lotus, giving the Mike White dramedy HALF of the available spots across best supporting actor and actress. While the casts for both shows were great, doing so in a year where the aforementioned Andor and HBO Max's The Pitt are stacked to the gills with incredible talent. Katherine LaNasa (Dana Evans) is a worthy inclusion, but so are Patrick Ball (Dr. Langdon), Taylor Dearden (Dr. King) and more.
