LABUAN (July 1): The community support animal welfare initiative 'Paws of Hope – Spay, Neuter and Feed' has successfully raised RM3,820 through a crowdfunding campaign on the MyStar app in just one month. The project was organized by students from Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL) under the supervision of their Corporate Finance lecturer, Dr Suzillah Binti Sidek. Coordinated by Gayatheri, the project's director, this student-led initiative aims to help stray animals by providing vital care, food and vaccinations. The campaign's official closing ceremony took place on June 12 at the Labuan Veterinary Services Department. From the total funds raised, RM2,065 was allocated to the Veterinary Services Department to cover the cost of spaying, neutering and vaccinating 18 cats. The remaining funds was used to purchase food for stray cats and dogs to support a food bank initiative for animals in need across Labuan. The project also received strong support from the local community including Lawrence Yap, owner of Pet Home Daycare: MaYa, who assisted with animal transport. Yap shared that the initiative deeply touched him, inspired by the memory of his beloved pet, Maya, who had passed away. This loss led him to dedicate his life to helping stray animals as a meaningful expression of love. The closing ceremony also included a symbolic handover of a mock cheque to the Veterinary Services Department and tokens of appreciation for all contributors and partners who had supported the project. Gayatheri expressed her heartfelt appreciation and honor in the collaborative efforts of students, government agencies, NGOs and the local community. 'This project is not just an academic but it is a small initiative that has created a big impact on the lives of stray animals in Labuan. Thank you to everyone who has played a role in making it a success,' she said. The 'Paws of Hope' project is part of the Service Learning Malaysia – University for Society (SULAM) program at UMSKAL, which emphasizes community-based learning while instilling humanitarian values in students.

AFU obtains confiscation order against ex-rangers who killed two rhinos

The Skukuza regional court has granted a confiscation order in favour of the National Prosecuting Authority's Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) in Mpumalanga against two convicted former field rangers who killed two rhinos in December 2018. 'The order, made on Thursday, compels Lucky Mkanzi and Nzima Joel Sihlangu to pay R836,600, plus 11% interest accruing from the date of the poaching of two rhinos,' NPA spokesperson Monica Nyuswa said. The court further directed that R41,820 being held in the SAPS Absa suspense bank account be paid to SANParks to support anti-rhino poaching efforts. Mkanzi and Sihlangu were each sentenced to 20 years' direct imprisonment last year for offences committed between December 25 and 30 2018 in the Skukuza section of the Kruger National Park. At the time of the offences, both were on day shift and had no authorisation to work during the night. During their trial, the prosecution presented evidence showing that the vehicle used in the poaching incident was stationary at the location where the rhinos were killed. Their supervisor testified that neither of the accused had permission to be on night duty. A tracking expert confirmed the movements of the vehicle, placing them at the crime scene, and a police officer testified about a raid on Sihlangu's residence where cash from the sale of rhino horns was found. Both accused were convicted of conspiracy to commit an offence and the illegal killing of two rhinos. 'The AFU plays a vital role in ensuring that criminals do not benefit from their unlawful actions. Through the AFU, the NPA continues to reinforce accountability, uphold the rule of law, and demonstrate that crime has serious financial and legal consequences,' Nyuswa said.

Nissan plans $7bn funding, including loan backed by UK government

Japan's struggling Nissan is considering raising more than ¥1-trillion (R125,794,820,900) from debt and asset sales which would include a syndicated loan guaranteed by the UK government, Bloomberg News said on Wednesday. The country's third-biggest carmaker plans to issue as much as ¥630bn (R78,291,108) worth of convertible securities and bonds, including high-yielding US dollar and euro notes, Bloomberg News said, citing documents it had seen. Nissan is also considering taking out a £1bn (R24,260,850,000) syndicated loan guaranteed by UK Export Finance, the report said. The report said Nissan is also looking at selling part of the stakes it holds in French carmaker and long-standing alliance partner Renault and in battery maker AESC Group, and plants in SA and Mexico. Representatives for Nissan and UK Export Finance did not respond to a request for comment. Bloomberg News cited sources as saying Nissan's board did not appear to have approved the funding proposal yet, leaving it unclear whether it would happen. The proposal was also slated to include the rollover of some debt, the report said. Earlier this month, the company presented a sweeping cost-cutting plan under which it plans to reduce its workforce by around 15% and cut car plants to 10 from 17 globally. Sources told Reuters this month Nissan is considering plans to shut two car assembly plants in Japan and overseas factories, including in Mexico, and stop production in SA as part of its cost-cutting plan. Nissan's shares rose more than 4% after the report but they gave up most of the gains and were last trading up 0.6%.
