Haryana STF acts against CMOs in 5 districts over fall in sex ratio, to act tough on violations

Chandigarh, The Haryana State Task Force, constituted to improve the sex ratio in the state, on Tuesday decided to withdraw all powers under the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act from chief medical officers of five districts showing a downward trend in sex ratio. Haryana STF acts against CMOs in 5 districts over fall in sex ratio, to act tough on violations The decision was taken at the weekly meeting of the state task force chaired by Additional Chief Secretary Sudhir Rajpal, an official statement said. The meeting focused on intensifying efforts to curb illegal abortions and further improve the state's sex ratio under the 'Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao' campaign. Haryana's sex ratio has improved to 905 from January 1 to July 28 this year, compared to 899 during the same period last year. Officials attributed the improvement to consistent field operations such as raids and decoy actions, it said. While 15 districts have shown marked improvement, five Ambala, Bhiwani, Charkhi Dadri, Palwal and Sirsa have showcased a decline in sex ratio compared to last year. In a stern move, Rajpal directed that powers under the PNDT Act be withdrawn from chief medical officers of these five districts and handed over to their counterparts of neighbouring districts, who will take immediate charge and begin corrective measures. He also ordered that the nodal officers for PNDT in these districts be chargesheeted and replaced. Special state squads, comprising Haryana Civil Services and other senior officers, will monitor enforcement and corrective actions in these areas. Rajpal said top-performing districts will be incentivised and rewarded. He stressed strict enforcement, including revoking licences of doctors found complicit in illegal abortions and sealing of centres involved in such practices. He further directed that such hospitals and clinics be delisted from the Ayushman Bharat Scheme and other government empanelments. Centres conducting illegal abortions under the guise of Dilation and Curettage procedures should also be identified and acted against, he added. The state is implementing reverse tracking of all medical termination of pregnancy and abortion cases beyond 12 weeks, particularly where women already have one or more daughters. Ten FIRs were registered last week in such suspected cases. Rajpal also announced a cash reward of ₹1 lakh for anyone providing authentic information about doctors or quacks involved in illegal sex determination and abortion practices. Two held after youth duped by ‘cheaper' cab ride offer from Bengaluru airport

Bengaluru: Two cab drivers duped a youth here on the pretext of providing him a cheaper ride home from the airport. The incident, which was reported to the police on June 23, happened when the victim arrived at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) from Japan on June 20 and was looking to book a taxi to his J P Nagar home. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Following the complaint, KIA police have arrested the two accused identified as Santosh, 46, and Kabiruddin, 33. They were remanded in judicial custody. According to the complaint filed by Pradeep Penakalapati, a builder from Puttaparthi in Andhra Pradesh, his son Sandeep, an undergraduate student, had returned from his trip to Japan and walked out of airport Terminal 2 around 1 am. While he was trying to book a taxi, Santosh approached him, offering a ride for Rs 1,000 – cheaper than what cab aggregators would usually charge. Once Sandeep agreed to the fare, the trip started with Kabiruddin, a native of Assam, behind the wheel. However, just a few metres into the ride, Kabiruddin passed his phone to Sandeep, saying there was a ride confirmation call that he needed to respond to. Soon, Sandeep realised it was Santosh at the other end of the call, claiming that the base price for the trip would be Rs 899, with Rs 50 charged for every km. Additionally, 1.9% of the total fare would be levied as night surcharge. Overall, a much higher amount than what was initially agreed upon. Sandeep disagreed with the amount and told Kabiruddin to stop the vehicle so that he could get down, but Kabiruddin continued to drive. He locked the doors and was speeding. He drove till Esteem Mall, turning a deaf ear to Sandeep's insistence to stop the car. Kabiruddin then stopped the car and demanded Rs 4,220. Realising he had been trapped, Sandeep made the payment without a fuss. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Kabiruddin then dumped the baggage on the road and sped off. Upon reaching home, Sandeep narrated his ordeal to his father, who lodged a complaint with KIA police. A senior police officer confirmed that there have been complaints about drivers picking up passengers, offering cheaper rides from the airport, but eventually coercing them into paying much higher amounts. He even said that this particular name, Santosh, had figured in some of the other incidents as well, though no one had filed any official plaint against him. CPO Futures likely to trade with slight downside bias next week

KUALA LUMPUR: The crude palm oil (CPO) futures contract on Bursa Malaysia Derivatives is expected to trade with a slight downside bias next week, amid rising output and stock levels, said a trader. Palm oil trader David Ng noted that the market is currently entering a seasonally higher production period, which typically begins in April and extends through September or October -- a period during which output typically increases, leading to a corresponding rise in stock levels. "We expect the commodity to trade between RM3,720 per tonne and RM3,950 per tonne," he told Bernama. Meanwhile, Interband Group of Companies senior palm oil trader Jim Teh expects the market to experience profit-taking, with prices likely to trade between RM3,700 per tonne and RM3,800 per tonne. "Stock-wise, the market will be closely watching the Malaysian Palm Oil Board data, which is scheduled for release on June 10," he said. In terms of demand, Teh noted that physical buying is expected from China, India, Pakistan, the Middle East, the European Union countries, and little buying from the United States. "Production-wise, the good weather conditions suggest that CPO output is likely to increase," he added. On a Friday-to-Friday basis, the spot-month June 2025 contract rose RM23 to RM3,911 per tonne, while July 2025 and August 2025 added RM39 each to RM3,930 per tonne and RM3,917 per tonne, respectively. September 2025 rose RM36 to RM3,906 per tonne, October 2025 increased RM29 to RM3,899 per tonne, and November 2025 went up RM25 to RM3,899 per tonne. The weekly trading volume advanced to 290,679 lots from 281,987 lots the previous week, while open interest edged down to 241,688 contracts from 241,994 contracts. The physical CPO price for June South gained RM30 to RM3,960 per tonne. -- BERNAMA
