Russian Scientists Discover Ancient Whale Remains Beneath Retreating Glacier

Nada Mustafa Russian scientists from the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI) have uncovered a significant concentration of ancient whale remains on Wilczek Island, part of the Franz Josef Land archipelago, according to TV BRICS. The discovery was made amid research on permafrost dynamics and glacial retreat, as reported by the official website of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation. According to AARI researcher Nikita Demidov, satellite image analysis and on-site measurements showed that the island's glacial dome split into two sections in under 20 years, exposing several square kilometres of marine terrace. This newly revealed area contains numerous well-preserved whale skeletons, some partially thawing at the glacier's edge. The concentration and condition of the remains suggest a rapid sea level change episode in the high Arctic within the past few thousand years. The degree of preservation reportedly increases with proximity to the glacier, indicating long-term entrapment in permafrost conditions. These findings offer critical insights into the palaeoecology and climatic history of Eurasia's northernmost archipelago, the source claims. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" Arts & Culture Hawass Foundation Launches 1st Course to Teach Ancient Egyptian Language

Trove of ancient whale bones discovered under melting Arctic glacier, photos

A trove of ancient whale bones was recently discovered beneath a melting Arctic glacier. The centuries-old skeletal remains were found during an expedition on Wilczek Island, part of a Russian archipelago known as the Franz Josef Land, located about 550 miles from the North Pole. Using satellite imagery, researchers with the the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI) determined the island's ice cap had split in half, revealing a large surface area measuring several square kilometers. In this newly exposed area, whale bones were found strewn across the barren landscape. In photos, researchers can be seen posing with the cetacean remains, some of which appear to measure several feet in length. It's not clear what species they belong to. Some of the skeletons were well-preserved, particularly those nearest to the receding glacier, according to a news release July 21 from AARI, which describes itself as the world's foremost research center for the study of the Earth's poles. The findings indicate a period of rapid sea level change that took place sometime in the last few thousand years. Over the years, numerous biological remains and artifacts have been found as a result of melting glaciers and permafrosts, including Stone Age tools and well-preserved baby mammoth. Sesame seed exports to China hit $49 million

Listen to article Pakistan's sesame seed exports to China have soared to unprecedented levels, reaching nearly $49 million between January and April 2025. This surge marks a major milestone in the growing agricultural trade between the two countries. Pakistan's Ambassador to China, Khalil Hashmi, credited the growth to domestic innovation and China's rising demand for quality imports. He praised the contributions of local research institutions, such as the Ayub Agricultural Research Institute (AARI) and its Oilseeds Research Institute (ORI) team, for driving productivity through improved seed varieties and advanced farming techniques. "While supply-side developments such as improved seed varieties and research-led farming techniques have played a vital role, it is China's growing consumer demand, preference for high-quality imports, and competitive pricing that are driving this record-setting trend," he said. Pakistan's rise in China's sesame import market has been dramatic. In 2019, it ranked 14th with $4.6 million in exports. By 2024, it climbed to third by value at $226.53 million, and second by volume, with 177,640 tonnes exported. From January to April 2025, exports hit 38,828 tonnes, valued at $48.58 million, a 337% year-on-year increase. Gopal Khamuani, Chairman of Pakistan Sesame Exporters Association, cited Pakistan's advantage in average export price at $1,300 per tonne, fast 15–20 day transit via sea and land, and 5–10 day processing times. Hashmi outlined a strategic roadmap to deepen trade ties through better seed quality, value-added processing, expanded e-commerce, and joint ventures. "Our goal must be to move beyond raw exports and tap into China's booming sesame-based product market, valued between $4.7 and $9.5 billion annually," he said. He also highlighted key initiatives, including the September 2024 trade event that secured $28 million in deals and registration of 177 Pakistani sesame companies in China. "Our sesame trade with China is more than an export story - it's a blueprint for shared prosperity," Hashmi concluded.
