ABC anchor David Muir 'in denial' as he reveals devastating loss: 'I don't know what I'm going to do'
David Muir admitted he was 'in denial' as he paid a special tribute to a beloved ABC World News Tonight colleague while announcing her departure after three decades at the network. The 51-year-old anchor bid farewell to stage manager Michele Mayer at the end of Tuesday night's episode, revealing that he got his hair cut and wore a full suit especially for her last day. After more than a decade working together, Muir revealed that Mayer was returning to her home state of Kentucky - and that he's going to be lost without her. Alongside archival footage, Muir affectionately referred to his colleague as 'Shelly' as he recounted her impressive history at ABC World News Tonight. 'There she is right there, the one person who is there every night who you don't see,' he began. 'Michele Mayer has been standing right next to that camera queuing me and so many other anchors: Peter [Jennings], Charlie [Gibson], Diane [Sawyer], for decades. 'She's been at ABC News for more than 30 years and if you look closely at this wide shot of the studio before we go on, the camera pans, Shelly with her hands on her hips and I always call out for her. 'Then as Michele knows more than anyone in these chaotic times right before we go on, our joke, I triple check we know what day it is.' Expressing shock over Mayer's departure, Muir continued: 'I'm still in denial about all this. I cannot believe that Shelly is leaving. My partner in crime out there. 'She's the one who's queuing me every single night, standing next to that camera. But Shelly, only for you, tonight I hope you notice that you're going to see my cuffs. 'The only reason anyone ever sees cuffs is because Shelly is always saying, "pull your cuffs down." I've got my watch on because Shelly likes it when I show up with my watch on – only happens once or twice a year. 'I've got a full suit on today for you, Shelley. As you know, jeans from the waist down behind that desk, but for you, the full suit because I know you don't dig the jeans. And I got a haircut - I got a haircut for you Shelly.' 'You deserve this Shelly,' Muir added. 'Go home to Kentucky, go be back with your family, your horses, and the beautiful countryside. 'What an 11 years this has been with you by my side. I don't know what I'm going to do.' Mayer started as a prompter operator for Peter Jennings back in the mid-1990s and then progressed to stage manager. She then became Sawyer's partner behind the scenes. Sawyer also had a special message for Mayer, in which she revealed the messages she'd relay while on-air. 'I just want all the wonderful people who watch world news to know, that when you're watching the person sitting at this desk, you're really also watching the coach behind the camera,' Sawyer said. 'Michele always there to say, "run along," or "slow it down," or "time to get out," or in my case she had signs printed out. Most often, [sign reads "sit up straight"].' Mayer is returning to her home state of Kentucky to 'catch her breath.'

Inside David Muir's very private relationship history after host sends fans into a frenzy with his REAL age
David Muir fans have been curious for years about his relationship status. The 51-year-old ABC World News Tonight anchor, who recently left viewers gobsmacked by his age due to his youthful looks, has kept details of his romantic history ever so private over the course of his career so far. Despite having cultivated a huge online following and recently sharing that he is taking all the attention in his stride, it seems as though he will continue to keep details about his love life under wraps. Not much is known about who he has dated in the past. In September 2015, he was seemingly in a relationship with former deputy editor of Jezebel, Kate Dries. After Page Six reported that Muir had become known as the 'anchor monster' after allegedly ruffling feathers with his fellow ABC colleagues, Dries wrote a blog post in which she described him as a 'sweetie.' While it's unclear as to whether this piece was written in jest, she penned: 'David and I connected right from the start. "I thought Peter Jennings was the James Bond of evening news," he told me on our first date. 'I tried to remain calm because (little did he know) Peter was my first love and I didn't want to make David feel uncomfortable. 'But Peter would quickly be pushed far from my mind during my courtship with David. I mean, will you look at this man?' According to Dries' post, they holidayed together in the Italian capital of Rome, where Muir interviewed the late Pope Francis. It is believed that Muir is single and that he does not have any children. He is, however, an uncle to six nieces and three nephews through his older sibling and two younger step-siblings. Last April, Muir posted on Instagram that he had enjoyed a trip around the French capital Paris with his niece, Finan Malcom, who works as a photographer and visual artist. Muir is a proud dog owner to six-year-old German short-haired pointer, Axel, who regularly appears on his Instagram. In a recent interview with People, Muir revealed that Axel is often spotted out and about with his dog walker. 'I love the stories of even when the dog walker is out in public, people will say, "Is that David Muir's dog?" It kind of puts it all in perspective. The dog is always the most important,' he said. He is also the proud owner of six-year-old dog Axel 'I think [he's] more [famous]. He deserves to be. And he has no idea which makes it even more special.' Muir has a strong friendship with married television hosts Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos and their three children: Joaquin, Lola and Michael. The threesome has vacationed together numerous times over the years, including a holiday to Greece in 2023. 'You are a great grill master, your cheeseburgers are delicious,' Ripa once gushed on live television. 'Joaquin would rather eat at David's than anywhere else on earth.' Ripa even paid a touching tribute to Muir in her 2022 memoir Live Wire, in which she wrote: 'To David Muir, you are the backbone and moral compass I need sometimes.'

Kamala Harris' 60 Minutes Interview Receives Emmy Nomination
The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has nominated 60 Minutes' interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris for a News & Documentary Emmy award or Outstanding Edited Interview. That interview is also the subject of a defamation suit brought by President Donald Trump, who accused CBS News of 'deceitful' editing. Shari Redstone—who heads up the network's parent company, Paramount Global—is reportedly seeking to settle the suit ahead of Paramount's planned merger with Skydance Media. On April 22, 60 Minutes executive producer Bill Owens exited the program citing a loss of journalistic independents. Correspondent Scott Pelley addressed his departure on-air last Sunday. Overall, CBS News received 28 nominations for the 46th News & Documentary Emmys. The Eye Network also received two nods in the Outstanding Live News Program category for CBS Mornings and CBS Evening News with Norah O'Donnell. (O'Donnell has since stepped down from the anchor's chair, and a new format has been introduced.) ABC News was also recognized in that category for its flagship morning and evening shows, Good Morning America and ABC World News Tonight with David Muir. The network received 30 nominations overall when combined with Hulu. NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt and Top Story with Tom Llamas rounded out the Outstanding Live News Program nominees. Holt recently announced that he would be departing the anchor's chair on May 30, with Llamas taking over on June 2. CNN was the big winner among the cable news networks with 33 nominations, including a pair of nods for Outstanding Breaking News Coverage for its reports on Hurricane Milton and South Korea declaring martial law. Other news outlets to receive Emmy nods include NBC News (13), MSNBC (8), Scripps News (8), Telemundo (8), Univision/Vix (7), Al Jazeera (7), BBC News/BBC America (6), Vice News (4), Bloomberg (3), NewsNation (3), PBS (3), The Weather Channel (2), CNBC (1), ESPN (1). Prime Video also earned a single nod for its first foray into news, Brian Williams' Election Night special. That newscast was nominated for its title sequence. The 2025 News & Documentary Emmys ceremony will be held at the Palladium Times Square Theater in New York City. It will take place over two days, with the News Ceremony held on Wednesday, June 25, and the Documentary Ceremony on Thursday, June 26. The full list of nominees can be found here.
