ABC anchor David Muir 'in denial' as he reveals devastating loss: 'I don't know what I'm going to do'
The 51-year-old anchor bid farewell to stage manager Michele Mayer at the end of Tuesday night's episode, revealing that he got his hair cut and wore a full suit especially for her last day.
After more than a decade working together, Muir revealed that Mayer was returning to her home state of Kentucky - and that he's going to be lost without her.
Alongside archival footage, Muir affectionately referred to his colleague as 'Shelly' as he recounted her impressive history at ABC World News Tonight.
'There she is right there, the one person who is there every night who you don't see,' he began.
'Michele Mayer has been standing right next to that camera queuing me and so many other anchors: Peter [Jennings], Charlie [Gibson], Diane [Sawyer], for decades.
'She's been at ABC News for more than 30 years and if you look closely at this wide shot of the studio before we go on, the camera pans, Shelly with her hands on her hips and I always call out for her.
'Then as Michele knows more than anyone in these chaotic times right before we go on, our joke, I triple check we know what day it is.'
Expressing shock over Mayer's departure, Muir continued: 'I'm still in denial about all this. I cannot believe that Shelly is leaving. My partner in crime out there.
'She's the one who's queuing me every single night, standing next to that camera. But Shelly, only for you, tonight I hope you notice that you're going to see my cuffs.
'The only reason anyone ever sees cuffs is because Shelly is always saying, "pull your cuffs down." I've got my watch on because Shelly likes it when I show up with my watch on – only happens once or twice a year.
'I've got a full suit on today for you, Shelley. As you know, jeans from the waist down behind that desk, but for you, the full suit because I know you don't dig the jeans. And I got a haircut - I got a haircut for you Shelly.'
'You deserve this Shelly,' Muir added. 'Go home to Kentucky, go be back with your family, your horses, and the beautiful countryside.
'What an 11 years this has been with you by my side. I don't know what I'm going to do.'
Mayer started as a prompter operator for Peter Jennings back in the mid-1990s and then progressed to stage manager.
She then became Sawyer's partner behind the scenes.
Sawyer also had a special message for Mayer, in which she revealed the messages she'd relay while on-air.
'I just want all the wonderful people who watch world news to know, that when you're watching the person sitting at this desk, you're really also watching the coach behind the camera,' Sawyer said.
'Michele always there to say, "run along," or "slow it down," or "time to get out," or in my case she had signs printed out. Most often, [sign reads "sit up straight"].'
Mayer is returning to her home state of Kentucky to 'catch her breath.'

A flight attendant has revealed the 'disgusting' hygiene habit passengers skip before boarding. Dallas-based air hostess Cher Killough, who has worked in the industry for five years, recently took to TikTok to call out bad in-flight etiquette - and took aim at people who don't shower before early flights in particular. Branding this behavior as 'unacceptable' in her TikTok, Cher revealed she thinks travelers should 'go to prison' for not showering before getting on a plane. In the clip, she said: 'There is zero reason that I should be smelling a stranger's body odour radiating off of their warm body at five o'clock in the morning. 'And it's always men, sometimes it's ladies who are having a lady problem that nobody told them about, but usually it's men. She added: 'Wash yourself! You are going to be shoulder to shoulder with strangers. Show up clean or don't come at all.' Elsewhere Cher revealed another annoying habit is when people play music and other noises out loud on their phones or iPad. She said: 'It's no one else's problem except yours that you didn't charge your earpods or you didn't bring headphones. 'Why are you making it everyone else's problem around you, Jail! Branding this behavior as 'unacceptable' in her TikTok, Cher said: 'I've been a passenger, and had it numerous times, where men will spread their knees all the way into my seat section or the person's on the other side. 'It's just unacceptable. 'It's always the shortest ones that are doing it!' she continued. 'I'm 5ft 8in, so if I'm taking up just my seat section, then you as a little 5ft 6in man can definitely do the same.' Cher also claimed that 'smelling like anything' during a flight was inconsiderate to other passengers. 'It's already an environment where people are prone to getting nauseous, so having an extra fragrance on top of that is just not a good mix. 'But if I had to pick one, I would definitely choose someone's perfume over someone's body odor over because we get that sometimes,' she clarified. Lastly, Cher added, taking off your shoes and walking around the plane barefoot was a big no-no. 'You seriously need to go to jail if you are having your bare toes out when you go to the bathroom,' she continued. 'I see this all the time and it should be against the law and in general I don't want to see your bare feet at all. Wear shoes or wear socks.' The clip, which racked up over 7,000 views, was captioned: 'Don't get mad at the fragrance one in the cabin! Some people are extremely sensitive to smells (I'm people)' Cher's clip sparked a spirited discussion in the comments section, with several people agreeing with her advice. One TikTok user noted: 'When they man spread in the middle i make myself as big as possible 'til they get the hint.' Another added: 'If someone man spreads I just lean my legs against him. The Sandman season two has been branded 'so pretentious it has ruined everything' and critics have skewered Netflix for 'turning a dreamy tale into a waking nightmare'. Season one was released back in 2022 and was based on the bestselling graphic novel by Neil Gaiman. The author was recently hit with sexual misconduct allegations from eight women, which he denies. Gaiman said back in January: 'I'm far from a perfect person, but I have never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity with anyone. Ever.' The series follows Morpheus (Tom Sturridge) as he 'embarks on a journey across worlds to find what was stolen from him and restore his power,' according to the synopsis. Starring Kirby Howell-Baptiste and Mark Hamill, amongst others, the new instalment launched on Netflix on July 3 has received mixed reviews. The Guardian slammed The Sandman's second season with only two out of five stars and claimed 'Neil Gaiman's emo drama is so pretentious, it ruins everything'. It describes how 'a fug of pretension' 'smothers' the show adding, 'missing every opportunity it creates for itself'. While the Metro rated it a more impressive four out of five stars and urged 'Don't let the Neil Gaiman accusations ruin The Sandman season 2'. They praised the 'fantastic' cast and added, 'it's those playing the Endless who I found most impressive'. The Independent however, was less impressed and only rated the new series two out of five stars. It wrote how the show felt 'like being trapped in a whirlwind of plot and intrigue' but that it 'never materialises into something solid enough to get to grips with'. While The Telegraph scored the series four out of five and described it as 'brilliant'. Though they felt, 'for Netflix, you suspect this dreamy tale has become a waking nightmare that can't end too soon' and claimed 'Neil Gaiman's involvement casts a shadow'. The Wrap however, has described the new instalment as 'mesmerizing in the best way'. It comes after the first season soon soared to number one on Netflix's Top 10 list following its debut. Gaiman's comic book series was first published from 1989-1996, but previous attempts to bring his beloved story to film were held up for years until Netflix signed a deal to produce the show in 2019. The Sandman seasons one and two are available to stream on Netflix.
