Blending infra with heritage: Nagpur Railway Station to shine as model for Amrit Bharat project
Nagpur: The Nagpur Railway Station, a key hub under Central Railway's Nagpur Division, is set to become a model for the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), blending modern infrastructure with its rich heritage. The ongoing redevelopment project aims to transform the station into a passenger-friendly, inclusive, and world-class facility while preserving its historical essence, the heritage structure, dating back to the British era and its link to India's freedom struggle. The project is progressing rapidly, with the foundation for an elevated concourse between lines 18 and 19 already complete, ensuring smooth and segregated passenger movement across platforms, said an official. Residents on board with proposed Avadi terminus revamp; seek temporary relocation of bus stand
Residents of Avadi have long been requesting the redevelopment of both the railway station and the bus terminus in the area to help commuters have seamless access between them, as both transport facilities suffer from poor amenities. While the Southern Railway has begun upgrading the Avadi railway station under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), with the work expected to be completed by the end of this year, the bus terminus continues to reel under poor passenger facilities. Located on CTH Road, directly opposite the railway station, the bus terminus has become a key transport hub for residents travelling to the city, as well as to the southern areas — particularly Tambaram and Kilambakkam via the Outer Ring Road — and to the Poonamallee Bus Terminus. As the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has been struggling financially to redevelop the Avadi bus terminus, the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), which executed both the Koyambedu and Kilambakkam bus terminals, has come to its rescue. Slew of amenities A senior CMDA official, providing details about the modernisation of the bus terminus, for which a function was held on Wednesday (July 9, 2025), said that a three-storeyed facility would be built at a cost of ₹36.06 crore. With a built-up area of 65,000 sq. ft., the terminus will include a food plaza, shopping area, public conveniences, a water purification plant, and restrooms for bus crew. The ground floor, designated exclusively for bus bays, will accommodate parking for 22 buses at a time. The terminus will also feature a spacious waiting area measuring nearly 5,000 sq. ft., along with a timekeeper's office and other administrative offices. The CMDA official said that as parking facilities have become a mandatory amenity for commuters, with both Metro and suburban railway stations offering them, the CMDA has made arrangements to accommodate parking for 500 vehicles, including cars. CMDA Minister P.K. Sekar Babu had already announced the redevelopment of the Avadi bus terminus in the 2024-25 budget for the CMDA. The reconstruction work will be completed within two years, the senior official added. Need for skywalk While residents are happy that the bus terminus is finally being reconstructed, they are concerned that the work will proceed alongside ongoing bus operations, similar to how redevelopment is being carried out at railway stations under the ABSS. They have urged authorities to temporarily shift the bus terminus to a vacant ground owned by the Defence Department, to prevent buses from being parked on CTH Road and worsening traffic congestion. Residents argue that operating buses from a portion of the old terminus is not a viable option. Social activist T. Sadagopan said that with the State government proposing to construct a Metro rail line from Koyambedu to Pattabhiram, passing through the Avadi bus terminus, the terminus is set to become a major transport hub, similar to Tambaram. He pointed out that the railway station, located on the southern side of CTH Road, along with heavy traffic congestion and the absence of a pedestrian signal, poses serious inconvenience and danger to pedestrians. To ensure easy and safe access between the bus terminus, Metro station, and railway station, he suggested constructing a skywalk, similar to the one connecting the T. Nagar bus terminus and Mambalam railway station. K.S. Gopalakrishnan, a longtime resident of Pattabhiram, suggested that the MTC should shift a portion of its bus operations to Pattabhiram during the reconstruction of the Avadi bus terminus. A senior official of the MTC, meanwhile, said they would explore the option of shifting the bus terminus to the vacant ground located behind the current bus terminus. Non-functional escalators Avadi residents also highlighted that the escalators installed at the railway station and made operational a few months ago have not been functioning or are being switched off during non-peak hours. Yuvan Shankar, a resident of Avadi, said several commuters, including senior citizens and women with children, are inconvenienced by this.

Mumbai briefs: Low awareness, stigma delay cervical cancer detection
Despite being one of the few preventable cancers with a reliable screening method, cervical cancer continues to be detected at advanced stages in India, experts said. At a panel discussion hosted by Tata Trusts on Wednesday, experts pointed to the twin barriers of poor awareness and social stigma as key contributors to this continuing crisis. 'Cervical cancer is still the second most common cancer among women in India, accounting for 22.8% of all cancer cases,' said Dr. Gauravi Mishra, Deputy Director at the Centre for Cancer Epidemiology, Tata Memorial Centre. 'What's frustrating is that it's preventable and treatable when detected early. But we still see women coming in very late.' Vandana Gupta, cancer survivor and founder of V Care Foundation, highlighted how deeply stigma is rooted—even among the educated. The event, part of the launch of the Khud Se Jeet awareness campaign by Tata Trusts, included a screening of the campaign film and a discussion moderated by Dr Rudradatta Shrotriya, Head of Medical Operations at Tata Cancer Care Foundation. ENS Mumbai: Western Railway has installed updated train indicators at seven suburban stations as part of its infrastructure upgrade under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS). The new systems have been introduced at Marine Lines, Charni Road, Grant Road, Lower Parel, Prabhadevi, Jogeshwari, and Malad stations. According to a press release issued by the Public Relations Department of Western Railway, the indicators feature a matrix-style digital display and a scrolling information bar that shows the names of stations where the train will halt. The system supports multilingual display to accommodate the city's diverse commuter base. The indicators are connected via an Ethernet-based network, which, railway officials said, allows for remote monitoring, software customisation, and faster troubleshooting in case of technical issues. Passenger associations demand coach watering facility, stabling lines on KRCL network in Udupi, Uttara Kannada districts
Railway patrons and passenger associations of Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts have planned to flag certain major concerns of the region, including lack of coach watering facility, stabling lines and upgradation of Udupi Railway Station under Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) with Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna when he visits Udupi district on Friday, June 13. The Railways was unable to start or terminate any train either at Karwar or Udupi as the Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd., (KRCL) has not provided coach watering facility in any of the stations in coastal Karnataka, regretted Kundapura Railway Prayanikara Samithi president Ganesh Puthran. While KRCL claims watering facility was available within about 350 km distance--at Mangaluru Junction and Madgaon--the possibility of operating trains towards Bengaluru via Padil Bypass without touching Mangaluru Junction gets affected. Therefore, KRCL should introduce coach watering facility either at Udupi or Kundapura Railway Station, Mr. Puthran demanded. He further said KRCL has not provided stabling lines at any of the stations on the entire Karnataka coast thereby making it difficult to stable trains for a few hours. Consequently, trains, either special or regular, have to resume return journey immediately thereby inconveniencing people, he noted. Stations development Besides urging the Railway Ministry to immediately sanction KRCL proposal to develop Udupi Railway Station under ABSS, Kundapura Railway Station too should be developed under the shceme, Mr. Puthran demanded. Also, important stations in coastal Karnataka lack adequate platform shelters as well as shelters for foot overbridges. KRCL should address this serious shortcoming on priority basis, he demanded. Uttara Kannada Railway Samithi Secretary Rajiv Gaonkar demanded low level second platforms at important stations, including Kumta and Gokarna Road, should be upgraded immediately for the benefit of passengers. Besides, there was no second platform at Barkur Railway Station near Brahmavara that causes severe misery to passengers if a train halts on the second line, he said. Mr. Gaonkar said the Ministry should forthwith implement its own decision, to extend Train No. 16585/586 SMVT Bengaluru-Murdeshwar-SMVT Bengaluru to Vasco da Gama so as to resume the lost connectivity between Karwar and Mysuru regions. He also demanded development of Karwar Station under Amrit Bharat Scheme.
