Former UNC basketball star lands contract with Lakers
RJ Davis has found a home in the NBA Former North Carolina Tar Heels' guard R.J. Davis will get another chance to impress in training camp. After going undrafted and then signing with the Los Angeles Lakers, Davis played for the team in the Summer League with the hope of landing a roster spot. On Saturday, the Lakers announced they had signed four players with Davis being among them. The contract details are not out yet but it's very likely an exhibit-10 contract for Davis which allows them to have the guard on their their roster for training camp. They can them convert the player to their G-League roster. Davis was signed along with Eric Dixon, Arthur Kaluma, and Augustas Marčiulionis. Davis played five seasons at North Carolina, winning the ACC Player of the Year award in 2024. He appeared in 175 games and averaged 15.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.0 steals in 32.4 minutes. It will still be a tough road ahead for Davis to crack the roster or earn a two-way contract but at least he's getting the opportunity to. This also gives UNC fans another player to root for to make a roster during training camp. Duke legend, Memphis assistant in talks with HBCU per report
Former Duke University star and current Memphis assistant coach Nolan Smith is reportedly in discussions to become the next head coach at Tennessee State University. According to Jon Rothstein, the deal is not finalized, but both sides are working toward an agreement. If completed, the move would mark a major hire for the HBCU program, which lost Penny Collins to the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies earlier this summer. A Rising Coaching Resume Smith has steadily climbed the coaching ranks since retiring from professional basketball. He joined the Memphis staff in September 2024 after two seasons at Louisville under Kenny Payne. Before his time at Louisville, he spent six years at Duke University in multiple roles. These included director of basketball operations, player development, and assistant coach during the 2021–22 season. Decorated Playing Career at Duke As a player, Smith was one of the most decorated in Duke University history. He earned consensus first-team All-American honors and was named ACC Player of the Year in 2011. That season, he led the conference in scoring (20.6 points per game) and served as team captain. He also won MVP honors in the ACC Tournament. Smith played a key role in Duke's 2010 national championship run. He earned Most Outstanding Player honors in the NCAA South Regional and was named to the All-Final Four Team. Over his four-year college career, he scored 1,911 points, ranking 17th in Duke history. His teams went 121-22 overall, including an incredible 65-2 at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Potential New Chapter at an HBCU If hired, the position at Tennessee State would be Smith's first head coaching job. It would also represent a significant moment for the Nashville-based HBCU, which continues to seek national recognition. Smith brings not only high-level basketball experience but also a strong record of community involvement. He's been honored by Points of Light and The News & Observer for his work in social justice and cancer potential hire could signal a turning point for Tennessee State. The HBCU had success with the high profile hire of Eddie George who led the program to the FCS playoffs. Mavericks shut down Cooper Flagg for rest of NBA summer league after breakout performance
The Dallas Mavericks have seen enough. No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg was pulled from 2025 NBA Summer League action this weekend, not due to injury, but as a strategic move by the Mavs, who have apparently seen what they wanted to see. Flagg scored just 10 points in his debut against the Lakers on only 5-of-21 shooting before exploding for 31 points in his second outing when facing the Spurs, going 10-of-21 from the field and grabbing four rebounds in 31 minutes. Cooper Flagg played just two Summer League games. NBAE via Getty Images 'I think it's a new environment, new setting,' Flagg said after Saturday's loss against the Spurs, in which he had his best game of the summer. 'They want to see me be aggressive and do that type of stuff. 'I think I did that a lot better today, just getting to the line, getting fouled, and that helped me to get comfortable and get settled in early. Still missed a bunch of free throws. I know my mom probably wasn't very happy with that,' Flagg added. Despite the 76-69 loss to San Antonio, it appeared as if Flagg had done enough to warrant holding him out until training camp this fall. His dominant performance included multiple highlight-reel dunks and a variety of scoring prowess shown from different parts of the floor. ESPN confirmed that Dallas officially shut Flagg down from further summer league play to protect their prized rookie and preserve him for the regular season, first reported by Marc Stein. Flagg, who was born on December 21, 2006 and is still just 18, reclassified academically and enrolled at Duke for the 2024–25 season, making him one of the youngest players in his NBA draft class. Cooper Flagg scored 31 points against the Spurs on Saturday. Getty Images At Duke, he averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game, earning a litany of awards, including ACC Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors while leading the Blue Devils to the Final Four. Nationally, he won the Wooden and Naismith Awards for Player of the Year, and he was also a consensus All-American. The Mavericks secured Flagg via the 2025 NBA Draft lottery months after stunningly trading away Luka Doncic before February's trade deadline.

Cooper Flagg bounces back from rough debut with huge 31-point Summer League outing
Perhaps Cooper Flagg just had some first-game jitters. In his second Summer League outing, the 18-year-old Flagg put up a game-high 31 points while shooting 10-for-21 against the Spurs on Saturday. The Mavericks ultimately lost the game 76-69, with incoming rookie Dylan Harper leading the way with 16 points, six rebounds and two steals for San Antonio. 3 Cooper Flagg, who scored 31 points, drives past Carter Bryant during the fourth quarter of the Mavericks' 76-69 Summer League loss to the Spurs at Thomas & Mack Center. I got to the line a little bit better today. Still missed a bunch of free throws. I know my mom probably wasn't very happy with that.' Flagg's performance comes just two days after his disappointing Summer League debut against the Lakers, when the No. 1 overall pick of the 2025 draft scored just 10 points on an abysmal 5-for-21 shooting. The reigning ACC Player of the Year failed to score in the second half of Thursday's game. Dallas was able to squeak out an 87-85 win after Lakers guard Bronny James — son of LeBron — missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer. 3 Cooper Flagg drives to the basket during the Mavericks' summer league loss to the Spurs. NBAE via Getty Images Following the game, Flagg was brutally honest with reporters regarding his performance Thursday. 'I couldn't really get into a rhythm, it's a different environment, obviously very different from college, it's probably very different from what the real NBA is gonna be like,' Flagg told reporters 'The coaches had a lot of confidence in me. They've been telling me they want me to experiment, try some new things, and I was trying to be aggressive, and that's new for me too. 'I would say that might be one of the worst games in my life, but we got the win, that's what really matters to me.' 3 Cooper Flagg looks on during the second quarter of the Mavericks' loss to the Spurs. IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect Going into this year's Summer League, Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said that he wanted to challenge Flagg by having him play out of his comfort zone. Kidd, who is entering his fifth season at the helm for Dallas, told reporters in June that he plans to have Flagg test out new positions. 'I don't look at the position,' Kidd said. 'I want to put him at point guard. I want to make him uncomfortable and see how he reacts, being able to run the show. 'We want to push. … And I think he's going to respond in a positive way. It's all right to fail. It's all right to turn the ball over. We've talked about that.'
