Smith has steadily climbed the coaching ranks since retiring from professional basketball. He joined the Memphis staff in September 2024 after two seasons at Louisville under Kenny Payne. Before his time at Louisville, he spent six years at Duke University in multiple roles. These included director of basketball operations, player development, and assistant coach during the 2021–22 season.
Decorated Playing Career at Duke
As a player, Smith was one of the most decorated in Duke University history. He earned consensus first-team All-American honors and was named ACC Player of the Year in 2011. That season, he led the conference in scoring (20.6 points per game) and served as team captain. He also won MVP honors in the ACC Tournament.
Smith played a key role in Duke's 2010 national championship run. He earned Most Outstanding Player honors in the NCAA South Regional and was named to the All-Final Four Team. Over his four-year college career, he scored 1,911 points, ranking 17th in Duke history. His teams went 121-22 overall, including an incredible 65-2 at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Potential New Chapter at an HBCU
If hired, the position at Tennessee State would be Smith's first head coaching job. It would also represent a significant moment for the Nashville-based HBCU, which continues to seek national recognition. Smith brings not only high-level basketball experience but also a strong record of community involvement. He's been honored by Points of Light and The News & Observer for his work in social justice and cancer awareness.The potential hire could signal a turning point for Tennessee State. The HBCU had success with the high profile hire of Eddie George who led the program to the FCS playoffs.

'Rodgers' luster may have dampened in is dismal two-year dabble with the New York Jets, but pairing his two decades of experience with the prestige of Mike Tomlin's Pittsburgh Steelers promises good TV. The ex-Packers great can still sling it. But can his aging legs keep him upright in a town starved for a deep run?' Benjamin wrote. Advertisement Rodgers is coming off a season in which he threw for 3,987 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions, with a 63% completion rate and 90.5 passer rating. He was at his best late in the year, too, which is an encouraging sign for the Steelers. Of Rodgers' 30 fastest top-speed plays last season, 17 came in Week 13 or later, per NFL Next Gen Stats. Derrick Bell of Steelers Now posted a two-minute highlight reel of Rodgers throwing dots up the seam last season with the Jets. The arm strength is clearly still there. Steelers All-Pro cornerback Darius Slay is very bullish on the team's signing of four-time NFL MVP. Slay won a Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles last season, so he knows what it takes to get to the top. Many have praised his arm strength, in addition to Slay. 'He's still throwing the s*** out of the ball, honestly,' a veteran NFL offensive coach said, via Jeremy Fowler of ESPN. 'He's the best quarterback they've had since (Ben Roethlisberger). We will see how the body holds up, but I think he's going to help them immensely.' Advertisement An unnamed AFC executive also praised Rodgers' arm strength 'Look, the mobility is an issue, there's no doubt,' the exec said. 'But where he helps them is with the plus arm strength and the field vision from the pocket. They haven't had that. I'm not sure that will be enough, but the offense will be at least respectable.' Pro Football Network believes 41-year-old quarterback Aaron Rodgers has the best chance to win team MVP. 'Only one player in NFL history — Peyton Manning — has more MVPs than Rodgers. FOUR-STAR OT ADAM GUTHRIE COMMITS TO CLEMSON It's a great year for offensive tackles in the state of Ohio. Adam Guthrie, Maxwell Riley, Sam Greer and Ben Congdon are all sure-fire Power Four prospects. But not everyone can end up at Ohio State. Guthrie does have official visits set to Ohio State, Clemson and Penn State this summer but I've got the Tigers with a commanding lead right now. Four-star tight end Mack Sutter released a top five over the weekend of Illinois, Ole Miss, Ohio State, Alabama and Penn State. There is a lot to like about each of those programs for Sutter. Ole Miss has a fun offense with coach Lane Kiffin. Ohio State just won the national championship and will compete for it every year. Alabama runs a great offense and wins at a high level. Penn State just had the best tight end in the country with Tyler Warren. Advertisement But in-state Illinois has always played a prominent role in his recruitment. The Illini have been hot on the recruiting trail, too. However, I'm predicting that Sutter does not pick the Illini and instead joins one of the other powerhouse programs that he has to choose from. 3. That was of course in part to flipping in-state five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood. But quietly the Wolverines put together another good defensive class from top to bottom. The level the team is recruiting at on defense could get a boost soon. Advertisement Defensive tackle Mason Graham, cornerback Will Johnson and defensive tackle Kenneth Grant all look like locks for the first round right now. Graham could even be a top-10 pick. If it unfolds this way for Michigan, expect another big bump in recruiting. This time on the defensive side of the ball, where they are already recruiting well. Chiefs open training camp focused on Super Bowl redemption following humbling loss to Philadelphia
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Andy Reid stood before his players before the start of training camp this week, just as the longtime Kansas City Chiefs coach does every year, and impressed upon the reigning AFC champions the importance of urgency. Patrick Mahomes saw no such need to deliver a message. Not with the way last season ended with a lopsided loss to the Eagles in the Super Bowl. 'I think enough was spoken after that game,' the two-time MVP quarterback said. 'But I think when you go back to OTAs and back to minicamp and stuff like that, the guys had that mindset. You could tell by the pep in their step and just in the little talks that guys have throughout the team. I don't think anything really needs to be said when you get beat like that. 'Everybody knows,' Mahomes said, 'that we've got to be better.' That underscores the level of expectations in Kansas City these days. The Chiefs still finished 15-2, tied with the Lions for the best record in the NFL, and won their ninth consecutive AFC West title by four games over the second-place Chargers. With the benefit of home-field advantage, the Chiefs rolled past Houston and narrowly beat Buffalo in the playoffs to reach the Super Bowl with a chance for an historic three-peat. Philadelphia led 7-0 after the first quarter, scored two more touchdowns in the second and took a 24-0 lead into the break, and then cruised through the second half to a 40-22 victory. It offered the Eagles some modicum of revenge after a loss to Mahomes and Co. in the big game two years earlier, and it left the Chiefs feeling wounded for the first time in years. 'Obviously we didn't play the way we wanted to play on a national stage. A worldwide stage,' said Mahomes, who was sacked six times by the Eagles and threw two interceptions in the game. 'You want to go out there and be better.' Chiefs general manager Brett Veach spent the offseason trying to fix many of their ills. He signed 49ers offensive tackle Jaylon Moore and drafted Josh Simmons in the first round to address a pressing need for protecting Mahomes' blind side. He signed Kristian Fulton to solidify the cornerback position, brought in Jerry Tillery to bolster the pass rush, and signed Elijah Mitchell to work alongside Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt in the backfield. More recently, Veach has taken care of the Chiefs' own. In the span of a week, Trey Smith set the market for a guard with a four-year, $94 million deal and pass rusher George Karlaftis signed a four-year, $93 million extension. Cornerback Trent McDuffie, who like Karlaftis was a first-round pick in 2022, could be next in line for a big contract. In the case of those two, every season Karlaftis and McDuffie have played in the NFL has ended in the Super Bowl, with two rings to show for their efforts. But it seems like the one that got away has overshadowed any of the successes. 'We wanted to finish better,' Karlaftis said simply, reflecting on last season. 'We just want to finish our season better.' The work for that began Tuesday amid oppressive heat and humidity at Missouri Western State University. '(The Super Bowl loss) kind of helps you out on some of those extra workouts that you don't want to do, or some of the different stuff in order to get better for next season, and kind of keeps that in your mind,' Mahomes said. 'Now we're here. We're here to start over. 'How can I get better for my teammates? How can I get better for the guys beside me?' And then go out there and attack so that we can find a way to win that last game, and not lose it.' ___
