Woman accused of stealing over $26K from funeral GoFundMe arrested in Maryland
ARLINGTON, Va. () — A woman accused of stealing thousands of dollars in funeral expenses from the GoFundMe of a relative has been arrested in Maryland after evading police for over a year, according to the Arlington County Police Department (ACPD). On June 20, police said officers, with the help of the Landover Hills Police Department, arrested Yesenia Amaya, 33, on charges of obtaining money by false pretense, computer fraud and embezzlement in connection with the 2023 incident. Montgomery County teacher sues after Palestine flag removed from classroom According to a wanted bulletin posted by ACPD in April, Amaya offered to create a GoFundMe to raise money for the funeral expenses and family of a distant relative after learning that they had unexpectedly died in Arlington in September 2023. Following the campaign's creation, 'there was a significant community response,' raising over $26,000 for the family. However, police said Amaya withdrew the money from the account in November 2023 and used it for something else. Three months later, in February 2024, police obtained warrants for Amaya's arrest but were unable to find her until the department received a tip from the community, according to ACPD. Officers from the Landover Hills Police Department arrested Amaya and extradited her to the Arlington County Detention facility, where she is being held without bond. In response to the incident, GoFundMe sent the following statement to DC News Now: 'GoFundMe has zero tolerance for the misuse of our platform and those who seek to take advantage of the generosity of others. The GoFundMe Beneficiary Guarantee keeps donors protected and we worked directly with the intended beneficiary… to deliver the total amount raised to her. In the rare case of misuse, we take swift action. In this instance, the organizer account has been banned from using the platform for any future fundraisers and we are cooperating with law enforcement's investigations into those accused of wrongdoing.' Hero Vida teases upcoming scooter yet again. Here's what to expect
The latest teaser of the electric scooter highlights a new colour shade along with the redesigned headlamp. Check Offers Hero MotoCorp and Vida have shared another teaser for their forthcoming electric scooter on their social media platforms. Previously, an initial teaser image of the scooter was put up on the brand's social platforms after images of the electric scooter were leaked online. The official unveiling for this model is set for July 1. The teaser does not reveal much other than the side view of the scooter's fascia, wherein the scooter gets a squareish LED headlamp with a new design and a bright red colour shade. Codenamed VX2, the upcoming scooter is anticipated to be positioned as a more affordable option compared to the V2 in the product lineup. This scooter was also spotted earlier featuring a smaller TFT display and switchgear similar to that of the V2. Notably, it includes a physical keyhole, suggesting that the VX2 aims to cater to budget-conscious consumers. The V2 is available with three battery pack options, while the VX2, which has also been seen, includes a 'Plus' identifier, indicating several variants may be offered. An image leak showed that the new scooter's alloy wheels would be the same as those on the V2. Currently, the Vida V2 has three versions: V2 Lite, V2 Plus, and V2 Pro. Focus on affordability Hero MotoCorp is reportedly working on a new electric vehicle platform named ACPD, designed to reduce production expenses. Although detailed information about the upcoming models remains undisclosed, this initiative aims to price electric scooters more competitively, potentially making them comparable to traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) models. As of now, Hero manufactures about 7,000 electric scooters each month. With the launch of new models based on the ACPD platform, this number is projected to more than double, reaching an estimated 15,000 units per month.
