DU identifies students in graffiti case, FIR filed
New Delhi: Delhi University has identified a group of students affiliated with the left-leaning All India Students' Association (AISA) who had allegedly defaced the wall outside the director of South Campus's bungalow with graffiti carrying slogans related to Bhagat Singh and BR Ambedkar. The university could take disciplinary action, including suspension, officials said. An FIR has also been registered in connection with the incident, and the university is examining lapses in campus security that allowed the act to take place. The action comes in the backdrop of a Delhi High Court order last year in which it pulled up DU over widespread postering and graffiti writing during the student elections. Following the court's intervention, the university has intensified its crackdown on defacement, the official added. Association seeks regulation of fee collection by colleges
Madurai: The All India Students' Association (AISA) submitted a petition to Madurai district collector K J Praveen Kumar on Wednesday, alleging that several govt and govt-aided colleges are collecting fees beyond govt-fixed rates. In the petition, the association said the illegal practice placed an undue financial burden on students and urged the district administration to take action to safeguard students' rights. It said students failing to pay are being denied hall tickets, marksheets, and other certificates, and alleged that some colleges are collecting tuition fees for three years at once. Several students who are eligible for scholarships are forced to pay the full tuition fee, and private colleges affiliated with Madurai Kamaraj University provide no clarity on the additional payments collected, it said and sought a probe into the matter. The association also demanded strict enforcement of the Tamil Nadu Private Colleges Regulation Act and refund of excess fees collected so far to the students. AISA is planning to conduct a protest on Panagal Road in the city soon to voice its demands.

JNUSU president hospitalised amid ongoing hunger stir
Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) president Nitish Kumar was hospitalised on Tuesday, the 12th day of an ongoing hunger strike, after he complained of chest pain, JNUSU members said. Students have been on an indefinite hunger strike demanding the reinstatement of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Entrance Examination (JNUEE), which has been replaced with a UGC-NET-based entrance system in recent years. The other demands include increasing the merit-cum-means scholarship and revocation of hostel eviction notices for PhD scholars on academic extension. Mr. Kumar, a member of the Left-affiliated All India Students' Association (AISA), was taken to Safdarjung Hospital. Loni, a JNU student and an AISA activist, who participated in the hunger strike, was also rushed to AIIMS on Tuesday afternoon after she blacked out. Both of them are said to be in stable condition. The JNUSU, in an open letter to the JNU Teachers' Association, stated that 14 students have been on hunger strike. 'Our principal demand is the restoration of the JNUEE. This exam has long ensured that this campus remains accessible to students from diverse backgrounds across the country. Its continuation is essential for safeguarding the inclusive character and academic integrity of JNU,' the letter read.

Unhappy with varsity's solutions, JNUSU continues hunger strike
The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) on Monday stated that the administration's response to their demands has been 'unsatisfactory' as their hunger strike entered its 11th day. The JNUSU's protest, which has also drawn attention from All India Students' Association (AISA) with their participation, is centred around issues related to PhD admissions, hostel extensions and student welfare policies. The protestors raised concerns over the university's decision to exclude candidates who appeared for the June 2025 UGC-NET in their PhD prospectus. The protesters contested that this leaves out many students, who are currently enrolled in Master's programmes. After the protests began, the university issued a circular on July 5, stating that the second cycle of PhD admissions for the academic year 2025-26 has tentatively been scheduled for December, giving the students a chance to apply for PhD admissions later in the year. 'This is no solution. Here, we are demanding JNUEE for PhD Admission. The entire delay of the academic cycle is happening because of dependency on the incompetent National Testing Agency (NTA),' JNUSU President Nitish Kumar told The Hindu. Another issue being raised by the protesters is the eviction of the PhD scholars from the hostel. In response, the university issued a notification allowing an extension for PhD scholars in the hostel facility. Mr. Kumar, however, said that they are 'unsatisfied' with the notification as he claimed the academic extension is 'self-validatory'. 'There is no need for any extra signatures from any authority. And how will the admonish decide the humanitarian grounds? Hostel accommodation is our right. We reject this notice. Admin must ensure that the hostel facility is available until PhD Submission,' Mr. Kumar said. After joining the strike, AISA said, 'Today, 236 students joined the mass relay hunger strike to escalate the ongoing indefinite hunger strike. We demand JNUEE for admissions, increased Merit-cum-means scholarships, and revocation of unfair proctorial punishments.'

Delhi: Jamia faculty accuses official of sexual harassment
Police said on Friday that a first information report has been registered on allegations by a woman faculty member of Jamia Millia Islamia's (JMI) Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE) against a CDOE section officer and that he has been questioned . Police said the accused has been booked under BNS sections 75 (sexual harassment) and 79 (outraging woman's modesty) and that her statement has been recorded before a magistrate. (Representational image) The All India Students' Association (AISA), in a press statement released on Thursday, had said that an AISA representative had accompanied the faculty member to the Jamia Nagar police station, following which the FIR was registered on June 17. DCP (southeast) Hemant Tiwari confirmed that an FIR was lodged after a complaint was received from the woman against her colleague. Police said the accused has been booked under BNS sections 75 (sexual harassment) and 79 (outraging woman's modesty) and that her statement has been recorded before a magistrate. 'The FIR is of sensitive nature. The incidents mentioned in the FIR are months old and we are probing the matter. We called the colleague (accused) for questioning and are verifying all allegations. There was no delay in lodging the FIR. It was done on the same day. There is mention of verbal abuse and sexual harassment. We will also question the university staff after which appropriate legal action will be taken against the accused...,' an officer at Jamia Nagar police station said, AISA fhad alleged that the university administration refused to take any action in the matter, and demanded immediate institutional accountability. 'For more than three months now, since March 2025, a woman faculty member at CDOE… has faced repeated sexual harassment, character assassination, financial harassment, professional humiliation, and institutional gaslighting, which have created an unsafe and hostile workplace environment that has forced her to quit her job,' AISA said in the statement. 'The survivor's requests for meetings with the Vice Chancellor and Registrar respectively were denied and her representations to them demanding action received no response. Despite multiple reminders and follow-ups, the survivor has been met with complete silence from the university administration and ICC (Internal Complaints committee),' AISA AISA also claimed that the victim 'was forcefully compelled to resign and warned that she would be blacklisted if she refused to remain silent'. However, an official from CDOE, on condition of anonymity, said she was actually a contractual employee and despite an offer to extend her contract, she refused to stay. 'Her contract ended on May 30 and the department had offered her an extension for a year. She, however, denied the offer and said she has other prospects,' the CDOE official said. 'Following the complaint, the accused had been transferred to another department. That decision is in effect currently. An enquiry committee is also looking into the matter and concerned people have been questioned regarding the same. However, it is an ongoing process and no final report has come out yet,' the official aded. HT contacted the victim but she refused to talk. HT also tried to get in touch with the accused but no response was received to calls and messages. The Jamia administration, meanwhile, declined to comment. AISA had demanded immediate suspension of the accused along with 'immediate action against the VC, Registrar and Director, CDOE, for their complicity and abuse of authority'. AISA had also called for the reinstatement of a democratically elected and autonomous Gender Sensitisation Committee Against Sexual Harassment (GSCASH). A university official said that while JMI does not have a GSCASH, the university does have an ICC 'which is very active and addresses all sexual harassment complaints'.
