Unhappy with varsity's solutions, JNUSU continues hunger strike
The JNUSU's protest, which has also drawn attention from All India Students' Association (AISA) with their participation, is centred around issues related to PhD admissions, hostel extensions and student welfare policies.
The protestors raised concerns over the university's decision to exclude candidates who appeared for the June 2025 UGC-NET in their PhD prospectus. The protesters contested that this leaves out many students, who are currently enrolled in Master's programmes.
After the protests began, the university issued a circular on July 5, stating that the second cycle of PhD admissions for the academic year 2025-26 has tentatively been scheduled for December, giving the students a chance to apply for PhD admissions later in the year.
'This is no solution. Here, we are demanding JNUEE for PhD Admission. The entire delay of the academic cycle is happening because of dependency on the incompetent National Testing Agency (NTA),' JNUSU President Nitish Kumar told The Hindu.
Another issue being raised by the protesters is the eviction of the PhD scholars from the hostel. In response, the university issued a notification allowing an extension for PhD scholars in the hostel facility.
Mr. Kumar, however, said that they are 'unsatisfied' with the notification as he claimed the academic extension is 'self-validatory'.
'There is no need for any extra signatures from any authority. And how will the admonish decide the humanitarian grounds? Hostel accommodation is our right. We reject this notice. Admin must ensure that the hostel facility is available until PhD Submission,' Mr. Kumar said.
After joining the strike, AISA said, 'Today, 236 students joined the mass relay hunger strike to escalate the ongoing indefinite hunger strike. We demand JNUEE for admissions, increased Merit-cum-means scholarships, and revocation of unfair proctorial punishments.'

‘Reputation being tarnished': DNA to Karnataka HC in plea to quash judicial probe report on Bengaluru stampede
Event management company DNA Entertainment Tuesday expressed concerns in the Karnataka High Court about the damage to its reputation, and raised the issue of not receiving a copy during their submissions while challenging the Justice John Michael D'Cunha report on the June 4 Bengaluru cricket stadium stampede. A division bench of Justices Jayant Banerji and Umesh Adiga was hearing DNA's plea against the panel's report, submitted last Thursday, seeking to quash it. It also sought an interim stay on the implementation of its recommendations. Among the extensive findings and recommendations of the report are a recommendation for legal actions against DNA, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and police officers over the M Chinnaswamy cricket stadium stampede, where 11 people died. A meeting of the Karnataka Cabinet last Thursday, led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, had accepted the report. Recalling the events of the day, DNA's counsel Senior Advocate B K Sampath Kumar stated, 'It so happened that the function at the Vidhana Soudha drew a lot of crowds… at the behest of government officials and politicians, I wouldn't want to name them, the entire audience were asked to go to the stadium where the team was being facilitated.' Kumar also raised concerns regarding procedural aspects of the judicial inquiry. Referring to media reports seeming to have details of the judicial report and not the petitioners, he added, 'Panel holds so and so responsible for stampede. How do they (media) know about it? Against the names also….they are all named. Apart from that, TV9 has even published the names of all the people'. While noting that 'every second' the reputation of the petitioner was being tarnished, Kumar clarified that he was confining his submissions to the questions of right to reputation and natural justice. Meanwhile, Advocate General Shashikiran Shetty suggested that the matter be deferred to see the stand of the Chief Justice's bench in the matter, as it was hearing the suo motu Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Bengaluru stampede case. The matter is set to be heard again next Tuesday. Meanwhile, DNA requested a clarification before the bench of Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and Justice CM Joshi that the suo motu proceedings would not interfere with their petition before the other bench, while the court put on record that the Karnataka Government had sought time to put forward the SOP for managing large groups.

Bihar: Nitish Kumar announces 3x pay hike for Asha workers; Mamta incentives doubled
NEW DELHI: Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday announced an increment in the honorarium of Asha and Mamata workers for playing "a key enhancing healthcare services in rural areas" of the state. In a social media post on X, Nitish said that the incentive for Asha workers will be increased from Rs 1,000 to Rs 3,000. Meanwhile, Mamta workers will be provided an incentive of 600 rupees per child birth delivery instead of 300 rupees. "Since forming the government in November 2005, we have undertaken extensive efforts to improve healthcare services. Asha and Mamta workers have played a significant role in enhancing healthcare services in rural areas. Keeping this in mind and honouring the vital contributions of ASHA and Mamta workers in strengthening healthcare services in rural areas, a decision has been made to increase their honorarium," Nitish said. "Asha workers will now receive an incentive of 3,000 rupees instead of 1,000 rupees.
