Russia to support Malaysia's nuclear technology development
MOSCOW: Russia has agreed to continue cooperating with Malaysia to build the country's capacity in nuclear energy development, covering institutional, human capital, technical, commercial and legal aspects, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said. Fadillah, who is also the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, said Russia's extensive experience in nuclear energy should be considered as Malaysia looks to enhance its future energy security. Speaking at a press conference after concluding his four-day working visit to Russia last night, he said one of the main objectives of the trip was to strengthen energy cooperation between the two countries. In addition to existing cooperation in coal imports, Fadillah said he and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk also discussed the potential for collaboration in the field of nuclear energy. "Russia possesses advanced technology in the peaceful use of nuclear energy. The country's experience in nuclear energy technology could support Malaysia's aspirations under the National Energy Transition Roadmap," said Fadillah. He also held a meeting on Friday with Russian state nuclear firm Rosatom's director general Alexey Likhachev, during which discussions covered technical and operational matters, including legal frameworks, technology transfer and workforce training. According to Fadillah, the meeting opened the door for direct dialogue between Malaysia's technical agencies and Rosatom to assess potential areas of nuclear cooperation, including the strengthening and modernisation of the power grid, which would in turn have a positive impact on ASEAN Power Grid cooperation. He said the Cabinet had, in principle, approved the consideration of nuclear energy as part of Malaysia's future energy mix. "This is to address the current limitations in baseload energy supply. We are trying to reduce our dependence on coal and gas, but supply remains a challenge. "In addition, we face constraints in hydroelectric generation due to limited water resources. Globally, many now see nuclear power as an option that must be considered," he added. Fadillah stressed that the government must first undertake a thorough study of nuclear technology, including public engagement efforts. "Public support is critical. This process must involve various ministries, agencies and NGOs to provide clear explanations. It can only proceed once an international agreement is signed and accepted by the majority of the public. This is the first step in that direction," he said. Fadillah concluded his four-day working visit to Russia today. He also visited Uzbekistan from June 21 to 24. The Deputy Prime Minister's visit to Russia followed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's official visit to the country from May 13 to 16, aimed at enhancing and exploring new areas of cooperation between Malaysia and Russia. — BERNAMA

43rd ASEAN Senior Officials' Meeting concludes with key agendas finalised
KUCHING: The 43rd ASEAN Senior Officials' Meeting on Energy (SOME), which began on Monday and involved the participation of about 250 delegates, concluded today with several agendas finalised. The meeting, chaired by Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) secretary-general Datuk Mad Zaidi Mohd Karli, featured a series of discussions, including energy-related consultation sessions involving senior officials from ASEAN member states. Delegates at the meeting unanimously agreed and committed to finalising two major agendas, namely the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) Enhanced Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and the second phase of the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) for 2026–2030. Mad Zaidi, at a press conference, said the meeting also reached consensus on the implementation progress of the six annual key priorities for the energy sector in 2025. This included the preparation of a framework for the development of submarine cables, the signing of the ASEAN Petroleum Security Agreement (APSA) Successor Agreement, and the launch of the ASEAN Energy Efficiency Database and Investment Platform (Building). Mad Zaidi also said the selection of Sarawak as the host for the meeting was expected to have a positive impact on the state, particularly in the energy sector. This, he said, was due to the interest shown by delegates in Sarawak's vast potential in renewable energy, given its abundant natural resources and strong commitment to sustainable energy. Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said international cooperation was crucial for ASEAN to realise a sustainable energy future, as this aspiration required member countries to adopt innovative technologies and enhance energy infrastructure. He said technological advancements and investment support from ASEAN dialogue partners and international organisations were vital in addressing complex challenges and achieving common energy goals. 'Sarawak is expected to play an important role in the implementation of regional initiatives, particularly in the development of hydropower and green energy,' he said in his speech at the welcome dinner for the delegates.

ASEAN Power Grid Enhanced MoU, APAEC Phase 2 Among Agendas Finalised At 43rd SOME
GENERAL KUCHING, June 18 (Bernama) -- The 43rd ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Energy (SOME) marked a significant milestone today with representatives reaching consensus on several strategic agendas aimed at advancing the regional energy sector. Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (PETRA) secretary-general Datuk Mad Zaidi Mohd Karli said the meeting had finalised major agendas, including the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) Enhanced Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and the second phase of the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) for 2026–2030. 'The APG MoU will serve as the main reference for implementing cross-border power grid projects and is expected to be signed by ASEAN member states during the ASEAN Ministers of Energy Meeting (AMEM) in Kuala Lumpur this October. 'Meanwhile, the APAEC will continue from Phase One, with an emphasis on clean energy transition, energy security, and comprehensive regional energy integration,' he told a press conference in conjunction with SOME today. Mad Zaidi said the meeting also agreed on the progress in the implementation of six energy priorities for 2025, which include establishing the Subsea Power Cable Development Framework, signing the ASEAN Petroleum Security Agreement (APSA) Successor Agreement, launching the ASEAN Energy Efficiency Database, and introducing the Investment Platform for Buildings. Additionally, he said the meeting also ratified the finalisation of the Long-Term Renewable Energy Masterplan (LTRM), development of the ASEAN Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) framework, and the implementation framework for Nuclear Power Plants (NPP). All agreements reached at the SOME will be forwarded to AMEM slated for October, he said. On Malaysia's role in the regional energy transition, Mad Zaidi highlighted the country's strong potential to lead based on its robust policies and infrastructure capabilities. 'The launch of the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), targeting 70 per cent renewable energy capacity by 2050, demonstrates Malaysia's serious commitment to the clean energy agenda,' he said.
