Dhanush Shares He Was Nervous About Raanjhanaa's Success: ‘Felt Responsible'
Last Updated: As the film celebrated its 12th anniversary, the producers held a special screening of the Aanand L Rai film in Mumbai for fans. Raanjhanaa, a romantic drama film starring Dhanush and Sonam Kapoor, has been etched forever in audiences' hearts. It is popular for its poignant representation of love, heartbreak and sacrifice. As the film celebrated its 12th anniversary, the producers held a special screening of the Aanand L Rai film in Mumbai for fans, with several celebrities in attendance. Dhanush was also present for the event and candidly spoke about the film and what makes it a 'cult classic'. Dhanush credited the success of Raanjhanaa to the vision of Aanand L Rai and Himanshu Sharma. He said, 'They believed in something that was close to impossible. At that time, they didn't have the right kind of budget for hiring me as the lead actor. But this man's (Aanand L Rai) passion was so strong that he just wanted me to play Kundan. He could have offered any actor this part and they would have happily come on board. After all, it's such a great part. But he went against all odds. I don't know I am supposed to say this and I don't care! He invested his own money as well. He went all out (to cast me). He saw Kundan in me and he stayed true to his vision." The actor stated that he had some doubts initially due to the language barrier but loved the character. He further remarked, 'They made a cult classic. It is not the story of Kundan and Zoya. It is the story of two mad men who believed in this." Dhanush noted that he was thankful that the film worked and he felt responsible for its success. Recalling the events on the release day, Dhanush said, 'I was in Mumbai, in the pooja room and was praying for this man. 12 years later, we are here with all of you. I thank you and all the Raanjhanaa fans all over the world. Har Har Mahadev!" Set in Benaras, the film tells the narrative of Kundan (Dhanush), a young guy who falls hopelessly in love with his childhood crush Zoya (Sonam), who hails from a different family. Following the success of Raanjhanaa, the cast reunited for another romantic love drama, Tere Ishk Mein. It is situated in the same emotional realm as the 2013 film, although it is not a direct continuation. The film, which stars Dhanush and Kriti Sanon, will be released on November 28. Kriti Sanon Joins Dhanush For Raanjhanaa Screening; Sonam Kapoor Gives It A Miss
Last Updated: Kriti Sanon attended Raanjhanaa's fan screening with Dhanush and Aanand L Rai; Sonam Kapoor was absent. As Aanand L Rai's Raanjhanaa approaches its 12th anniversary on June 21, 2025, the film continues to resonate deeply with audiences. A special fan screening of the 2013 romantic classic was held in Mumbai ahead of the milestone, and it turned into a nostalgic evening for movie lovers. Dhanush, who played the iconic Kundan Shankar, arrived at the event along with director Aanand L Rai and actor Kriti Sanon, who will be seen next with Dhanush in Rai's upcoming project Tere Ishk Mein. Notably, Sonam Kapoor, the original film's lead actress, was missing from the celebration. On the red carpet, Kriti Sanon looked striking in a scalloped wine-hued cut-out bodice paired with a flowy coral-orange skirt. Her open hair, soft makeup, and confident aura completed the look—elegant and playful, much like her onscreen presence. Dhanush, on the other hand, opted for an effortlessly sharp black suit with a matching tee and layered necklaces. His sleeves were rolled up, adding a hint of casual charm to his tailored look. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Viral Bhayani (@viralbhayani) View this post on Instagram A post shared by Snehkumar Zala (@snehzala) Speaking about Raanjhanaa, Dhanush had once shared, 'Aanand Rai did not choose me for Kolaveri Di, but for my National Award-winning film Aadukalam. Frankly speaking, I did not have to go through any rigid preparation for the role." Reflecting on his Hindi dialogues, the actor recalled the challenge of dubbing all his lines, 'It was tough but the writer Hemanshu and editor Hemal guided me all through the pauses and punches." He also credited Sonam Kapoor for supporting him during filming, adding, 'She helped me understand so many things… it must have been difficult for her to act with me." Director Aanand L Rai has always believed Dhanush was the perfect choice. 'I needed someone who could look vulnerable on screen. When I saw Aadukalam, I liked him immediately—he looked honest and ordinary, which was the demand of the character," he had told India Today. Raanjhanaa was re-released in theatres on February 28, 2025, rekindling love for its music and storytelling. Rai noted, 'It's fantastic that people still listen to Raanjhanaa's music and shower the same kind of love. It's a film very close to my heart." First Published:
