Ben Roethlisberger Makes Clear Choice Between Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers

Ben Roethlisberger Makes Clear Choice Between Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Ben Roethlisberger has chosen his side in a debate over whether prime Aaron Rodgers was better than present-day Patrick Mahomes. Advertisement Mahomes and Rodgers are two quarterbacks who have captivated NFL audiences around the world for many years. During his heyday with the Green Bay Packers, Rodgers was among the most feared signal-callers in the league; between 2011 and 2021, he was named NFL MVP four times. During this span, he led the NFL in touchdown passes twice, and he boasted the league's lowest interception rate five times. However, Rodgers' lone Super Bowl win (to date) occurred in 2010, right as he emerged as an elite player. In only seven seasons as the Kansas City Chiefs' starting quarterback, Mahomes has already played in five Super Bowls, with three victories to his name. Mahomes, a two-time MVP, had a "down" year in 2024 despite the Chiefs' 15-2 record. Mahomes failed to crack the 4,000-yard mark for the first time since his rookie season, but he led the NFL in game-winning drives and fourth-quarter comebacks will winning another AFC championship. At 29 years old, Mahomes already has racked up more playoff victories (17) than Rodgers (11) has in his entire career. But Roethlisberger, an icon in Pittsburgh, still thinks prime Rodgers was better than the current iteration of Mahomes. Advertisement "Patrick Mahomes is just now entering out of his prime, I think," Roethlisberger said Wednesday on his podcast. "He'll go down as another arguable GOAT. But I think Aaron in his prime is better." Rodgers only recently joined the Steelers on a one-year contract, entering what is almost certainly his final NFL season in 2025. Only time will tell as to whether Rodgers can propel Pittsburgh to the playoffs, and a first postseason win since Roethlisberger was under center in January 2017, but Roethlisberger is optimistic that Rodgers has plenty left in the tank after two tumultuous, injury-affected years with the New York Jets. "I think you'll get a better Aaron this year," Roethlisberger said. "Just because the thought process of the Achilles, 'what can I do, what can I not do?' I don't think he'll think about it at all." Ex-NFL quarterback's shock Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes comparison divides opinion

Legendary NFL quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has split fan opinion after claiming that Aaron Rodgers was 'better' in his prime than Patrick Mahomes. Debates over where Rodgers stands within the pantheon of football's greatest ever quarterbacks has been rife after he confirmed that he's ready to end his NFL career. The quarterback signed a one-year, $13.65million deal with the Steelers earlier this month however admitted that he expects the upcoming season to be his final. In contrast, Mahomes has plenty of years left on the football field and is quickly rising up the quarterback 'GOAT' list after shining in recent years. The Chiefs star, who is just 29, has been to five Super Bowls in his career and won three - compared to Rodgers' single title claimed at Super Bowl XLV. Despite this, Roethlisberger insisted that a 'prime' Rodgers trumps Mahomes - but still took time to heap praise on the Chiefs star. He revealed: 'I would take Aaron in his prime over Patrick now. (Pat) He'll go down as another arguable G.O.A.T. I think Aaron in his prime is better'. It didn't take long for fans to provide their opinions on the statement and it's fair to say there was a split among supporters. Some were echoing Roethlisberger's thoughts, as they wrote: 'AR is the most efficient QB in NFL history. Ben spit facts'. 'Completely agree. Put prime Rodgers in Mahomes' situation and that would be insane,' another said. However, some fans were quick to back Mahomes. 'Maybe in regular season but in the playoffs dude never played to his potential everyone knows that', one said. 'Rogers might be the better passer overall But obviously Mahomes has the better success in terms of champions', another said. 'No i don't agree with this statement. I love Rodgers but Mahomes is something else'. Rodgers agreed to play his 21st season with the Steelers this month on a deal that reportedly includes $10million guaranteed - following yet another offseason in NFL limbo after his split from the New York Jets. After leaving New York, Rodgers had been linked with city rivals the Giants and the Minnesota Vikings as well as the Steelers. It quickly became clear, however, that Pittsburgh was the only realistic option on the table for him, before he jetted to Pennsylvania for talks with Mike Tomlin. Yet, Rodgers still took his time before committing to the Steelers before admitting to Joe Rogan last month that tragedy in his personal life, with multiple members of his inner circle said to be battling cancer, had forced him to put his decision on hold.

He joined the "Pat McAfee Show" recently and opened up about his free agency and the future. When it came to the Steelers, Rodgers was happy to share exactly why he chose to sign with the team. Two people in particular were the major reasons for his decision. One of those people is none other than head coach Mike Tomlin. "Well, I've had conversations with Mike T every single week. And it was really through those conversations that this became a reality," Rodgers said. "So, you know, I think most people who come to the Steelers talk about one of the reasons being Mike T. And I can say that was right at the top. Just the conversations that we had, it felt like you were talking to an old friend, honestly. So I really appreciated those conversations throughout it." Who was the other person? That would be star wide receiver DK Metcalf. "DK is a lead by example guy, and he's a big reason that I'm in Pittsburgh, as well, the conversations that we had and just the kind of person that he is," Rodgers said. ESPN analyst accused of mocking colleague's weight with savage on-air comment

ESPN analyst Mike Tannenbaum has found himself in hot water after seemingly mocking colleague Brian Windhorst about his weight while on-air. The incident occurred during Friday's broadcast of 'Get Up', where ESPN's team of analysts sit down to discuss the latest news from across the sport world. However, during the segment, Tannenbaum appeared to take an unnecessary swipe at his colleague, which lefts fans confused. The panel were discussing Aaron Rodgers and whether he could deliver a first playoff win for the Pittsburgh Steelers since 2016. Tannenbaum was asked whether he was 'convinced' over Rodgers, to which he replied: 'No! I'm more convinced that Windy [Windhorst] is in the cafeteria!'. His fellow panelists attempted to laugh off the comment, with Dan Graziano swiftly interjecting: 'No idea where Windy is'. did Mike Tannenbaum just make fun of Brian Windhorst's weight on national TV? — Eric Italiano (@eric_ital) June 27, 2025 The clip emerged on social media the following day after one user posted it with the caption: 'Did Mike Tannenbaum just make fun of Brian Windhorst's weight on national TV?' Tannenbaum - who was previously the general manager and senior VP of football operations for the New York Jets - has been part of ESPN's analyst team since 2019. Prior to those roles, he was also the executive vice president of operations for the Miami Dolphins for three years. It comes as the latest blunder on ESPN's broadcasts after a hilarious slip of the tongue saw Fox Sports host Colin Cowherd accidentally announced as a pick during this week's NBA Draft. With the 11th pick on Wednesday night, the Portland Trail Blazers selected Cedric Coward from Washington State. But as cameras cut to the 21-year-old celebrating with his loved ones, ESPN anchor Malika Andrews announced that Portland had picked 'Colin Cowherd'. 'This is a young man with the ultimate bet-on-yourself story,' Andrews continued. Alas, Colin Cowherd is a 61-year-old sportscaster with Fox Sports who hosts 'The Herd'. He made light of ESPN's error on social media. 'Apparently, I made a hell of an impact in Portland,' Cowherd wrote.

Aaron Rodgers: DK Metcalf is "a big reason" I signed with Steelers

Aaron Rodgers believes that the 2025 season will be his final one in the NFL and he said the chance to close out his career playing for a cornerstone NFL franchise helped draw him to the Steelers this offseason. It wasn't the only thing that attracted him to Pittsburgh, however. During this week's visit to The Pat McAfee Show, Rodgers said that wide receiver DK Metcalf's presence was also a draw when it came time to decide about his plans for the year. Advertisement "DK is a lead by example guy,' Rodgers said. 'He's a big reason I'm in Pittsburgh as well. Conversations that we had and just the kind of person that he is. At the start of the year, I didn't really know DK at all. He's like, 'I work out at 6 a.m. every day.' I'm like, okay, this guy has discipline, this guy has a drive. I said, 'How about 8 o'clock because I'm gonna have to drive from Malibu to UCLA?' He said, 'Yeah, that's fine.' He's not just a specimen, but he's a really solid human being. He's a solid, solid dude, and he leads by example. The way he practices — I think that's one of the most encouraging things is the room goes how the top dog goes." Metcalf is also new to Pittsburgh and the connection between the two players will play a big part in determining how well Rodgers's last hurrah unfolds this fall.
