Federal government invests in active transportation in Abegweit First Nation Français

SCOTCHFORT, PEI, July 11, 2025 /CNW/ - The Abegweit First Nation is building infrastructure that will support active lifestyles and eco-tourism, after an investment of more than $5.5 million from the federal government. The Confederation Trail System is used by thousands of Islanders and tourists each day for their active transportation needs. However, the portion of the Confederation trail system that cuts through Scotchfort is not connected to other active transportation routes in the community and does not offer access to the Hillsborough River. The project announced today includes the construction of a 2km multi-use pathway to connect the Confederation Trail to Scotchfort, which will offer residents and visitors opportunities to explore more of the community and encourage healthy lifestyles. A floating boardwalk system will offer access to the Hillsborough River as well as an Active Transportation Visitor Centre. This Centre will serve as a respite location while offering access to kayaks and canoes and training on the safe usage of the equipment. The revitalization of Scotchfort's active transportation infrastructure will make it easier, safer and more convenient to access the community and surrounding areas, providing meaningful benefits and creating economic opportunities for the region. Quotes "Investing in healthy and active communities is a priority of the Government of Canada. The trail system improvements and accessible transportation hub project in Scotchfort will not only foster healthier lifestyles, it will better connect neighbouring communities to Abegweit First Nation so that visitors can explore the community and learn more about their history and culture." Kent MacDonald, Member of Parliament for Cardigan "This investment is an important step forward for our community. Connecting the Confederation Trail to Scotchfort's pathways and the Hillsborough River creates new ways for our people and visitors to engage with the land and water. It supports active living, cultural tourism, and our broader vision for sustainable growth in Abegweit First Nation." Roderick W. Gould Jr., Chief of Abegweit First Nation Quick Facts The federal government is investing $5,532,112 in this project through the Active Transportation Fund and the Abegweit First Nation is contributing $189,296. Active transportation refers to the movement of people or goods powered by human activity. It includes walking, cycling and the use of human-powered or hybrid mobility aids such as wheelchairs, scooters, e-bikes, rollerblades, snowshoes, cross-country skis, and more. The Active Transportation Fund was launched in 2021 to provide $400 million to make travel by active transportation easier, safer, more convenient, and more enjoyable. The new Canada Public Transit Fund (CPTF) will provide an average of $3 billion a year of permanent funding to respond to local transit needs by enhancing integrated planning, improving access to public transit and active transportation, and supporting the development of more affordable, sustainable, and inclusive communities. The CPTF supports transit and active transportation investments in three streams: Metro Region Agreements, Baseline Funding, and Targeted Funding. Visit the Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada website for more information. The federal government has also launched an Active Transportation Online Hub. This webpage provides resources related to active transportation, such as data and research, policies, success stories on projects across Canada, and information on the federal government's active transportation investments. The funding announced today builds on the federal government's work through the Atlantic Growth Strategy to create well-paying jobs and strengthen local economies. Buckingham Palace Shares New IG Photos of Surprising Royal Family Member: the King's Brother

Buckingham Palace always keeps us on our toes. The royal palace often shares surprise photos of the family on their official Instagram, but their latest post is one we didn't see coming—a picture of King Charles's brother, The Duke of Edinburgh, who has been in Canada to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the PEI Regiment. Serving as the official Colonel-in-Chief, the Duke looked spiffy in a grey checkered suit as he met with members of Canada's military and policemen, pet horses and enjoyed a boat ride that offered stunning views of the city. The event-filled action didn't stop there for King Charles, as, according to the palace, he joined a Freedom of the City parade in Charlottetown, met with the Abegweit First Nation and took part in an education forum for his International Award, which he established as an organization to challenge young people to find their purpose, passion and place in the world. And that was just for Prince Edward Island! The Duke of Edinburgh also made a stop in Toronto, where he celebrated Canada's military and police services with visits to the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment, HMCS York, CFB Trenton, and the Toronto Police Marine Unit and Emergency Task Force, and concluded his trip in Ottawa, which saw him joining the Canada Day celebrations, and, as Honorary Deputy Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, visiting the Musical Ride Duke's charitable initiatives certainly didn't go unnoticed, with one commenter writing, "The Duke of Edinburgh does brilliant work for the family. HRH is a dutiful and kind man, and it's always amazing to see more of what he's been doing," and another adding, "Dutiful humble Duke who has been rewarded in titles and our respect for his years of service." This visit to Canada follows the royal's formal induction into the Royal Society of Edinburgh, which is also described as an Honorary Fellow of "Scotland's National Academy."The Duke was inducted by the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE) president, Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli, and said in his address to the RSE Fellows and members of the Young Academy of Scotland, "I am proud to join and recognize this institution's rich history and its unwavering commitment to the advancement of knowledge for good, and it has been wonderful to learn about the breadth of this work today." The Duke of Edinburgh, youngest brother of King Charles, in P.E.I. to help regiment mark anniversary

Prince Edward, the Duke of Edinburgh, has received a warm welcome to the Canadian province that also bears that name. As well as meeting and drumming with members of Abegweit First Nation (shown), he visited the Cenotaph in Scotchfort, P.E.I. As CBC's Sheehan Desjardins reports, Edward has a regimental ball and a parade ahead of him before he leaves Charlottetown for Toronto.

Hopes high for new health centre under construction at Abegweit First Nation

Social Sharing Abegweit First Nation is hoping that a new health centre being built in the central P.E.I. community of Scotchfort, expected to be open by next year, will answer the needs of the surrounding area as well as the Indigenous community. With a rising population thanks to a number of First Nation initiatives, Chief Junior Gould said services need to grow too. "We have to grow in an ever-expanding community, at every capacity, whether it be the health centre, or the daycare or the housing." The current wellness centre can't expand any more, let alone make space for a dental office or pharmacy, both eventual goals of community planners. Hence the project to replace it. "The new health centre is being located in the front of the community to provide services to the Abegweit First Nation — all of its community, from its youngest to its oldest — but also provide services to Islanders that are in need of such services," Gould said. "We feel that we are able to accommodate the needs of our community by this expansion as well as fill some of the gaps in the province." Work begins on new Abegweit First Nation health centre as community continues to grow 13 hours ago Duration 2:08 Ground has been broken on a new health centre on the Abegweir First Nation in Scotchfort, P.E.I. But as CBC's Sheehan Desjardins tell us, that's just one of the projects on the go — a daycare will be expanding and more homes are being built to keep up with community demands. One of the top priorities is making it easier for older residents to have access to medical care without having to travel long distances, Gould said. He said some Scotchfort residents feel uncomfortable seeking help in communities like Charlottetown. "The older community members aren't comfortable leaving the community and going out and looking for services, where they are judged on how they look or a perception of who they are or where they're from," he said. "To have these services offered in-house in the community, especially for our older generations, to be able to receive the same services as other people in a comfortable, traditional environment — it means the world to them."
