Advertisement Coach Simone Inzaghi left Inter Milan to join Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal last month. The 49-year-old decided to prioritize the cash on offer in Saudi Arabia rather than continuing to coach at a high level in Europe. After Inzaghi made the switch to Riyadh, a big question has been whether he would target any of his former players at Inter. Inter Milan To Make Decisions On Future Of Aging Trio After Club World Cup
Inter Milan To Make Decisions On Future Of Aging Trio After Club World Cup Inter Milan will decide on the futures of Francesco Acerbi, Matteo Darmian, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan after the Club World Cup. This according to Italian outlet FCInterNews. They report that out of the three veteran players, Acerbi would be the likeliest to depart this summer. Advertisement This summer looks to be one of transition for Inter Milan. It is no secret that Inter owners Oaktree Capital want to move the project towards a focus on youth rather than experience. Moreover, the Nerazzurri had the highest average squad age in Serie A last season. By some distance. Therefore, Inter are skewing towards signing younger players. But at the same time, the Nerazzurri also must make decisions regarding the future of some veteran players who have been key figures for them over the last few years. Inter Milan To Decide On Futures Of Acerbi, Darmian & Mkhitaryan After Club World Cup PASADENA, CALIFORNIA – JUNE 17: Francesco Acerbi #15 of FC Internazionale Milano warms up prior to the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 group E match between CF Monterrey and FC Internazionale Milano at Rose Bowl Stadium on June 17, 2025 in Pasadena, California. (Photo by) In the meantime, Inter Milan have been playing at the Club World Cup this summer. Advertisement The tournament has acted as something of a watershed for the Nerazzurri squad. On the one hand, young players have gotten a chance to impress. Players like Francesco Pio Esposito, Valentin Carboni, Petar Sucic, and Luis Henrique have all caught the eye. But at the same time, new Inter coach Cristian Chivu has still been relying on some of the veterans in the squad. For example, Francesco Acerbi has started two out of Inter's three group stage matches. Meanwhile, Matteo Darmian started all three. He started at right-wingback against Monterrey, before filling in on the right of the back three in the absence of Benjamin Pavard and Yann Bisseck. Advertisement Then, Henrikh Mkhitaryan has started twice and come off the bench once. Therefore, it is clear that, at least for the time being, these vastly experienced players have a role to play. But this summer will represent an important turning point for Inter. And the club must decide which older players will have a role next season. According to FCInterNews, it is not impossible that Inter could decide to part ways with Francesco Acerbi. Considering that the Nerazzurri are aiming to make a major defensive signing, the 37-year-old may find himself squeezed out. On the other hand, the versatile Matteo Darmian is more likely to remain as reliable squad depth. Advertisement Similarly, FCIN report, Inter are likely to keep Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the fold. The Armenian won't be a regular starter as he has been in the last three seasons. Most likely, Petar Sucic's arrival will mean that Mkhitaryan's playing time tails off. However, reports FCIN, Inter will in all likelihood keep Mkhitaryan around.

Inter Milan star tells PSG fan 'I'll beat the s*** out of you' after UCL jibe
Inter Milan were crushed 5-0 in the Champions League final by Paris Saint-Germain earlier this month, as Francesco Acerbi suffered one particularly embarrassing moment Francesco Acerbi threatened to 'beat the s***' out of a Paris Saint-Germain fan who goaded the Inter Milan star about the teams' Champions League final clash. Acerbi's Inter were hammered 5-0 by PSG in Munich on June 1 and now both teams are competing at the Club World Cup in the United States. During the closing stages of the one-sided final, 37-year-old Acerbi was embarrassed by PSG forward Bradley Barcola, whose fancy footwork left the Italian defender dazzled. The moment was widely shared on social media and one fan in Seattle took his torment a step further. During a meet-and-greet event, the fan - who was wearing a PSG shirt - reminded Acerbi of the humiliating moment. The ex-Lazio defender sought the help of a translator, who sternly told the fan in English: "You must be serious with him." Just a few seconds later, Acerbi made his feelings clear. Fuming in Italian, he said: "I'm serious. Don't make fun of me - I don't like it. I'm crazy, I'll beat the s*** out of you." Acerbi quickly moved on, posing for photos with more respecting fans. It's not the first time the veteran centre-back has been embroiled in controversy this month. Despite Italy playing two crucial World Cup qualifiers earlier this month, Acerbi turned down a call-up for his national team. He accused manager Luciano Spalletti, who's since been sacked, of disrespecting him. Acerbi posted on social media: "It's not a decision I have taken lightly. However, I believe that in light of recent events the conditions aren't there today for me to go forward with serenity. "I demand respect. If that respect is lacking from those who should lead the group, I prefer to step aside. I won't stay where I'm no longer truly wanted and it's clear I'm not part of the coach's project." Acerbi's focus shifted to helping Inter against Japanese side Urawa Reds in their second match of the Club World Cup on Saturday. He'll also be looking to impress new manager Cristian Chivu. Ex-Inter defender Chivu has taken over from Simone Inzaghi, who left San Siro for the riches of Saudi Arabian heavyweights Al-Hilal shortly after the Champions League final. Former team-mate Javier Zanetti, who's now the vice-president of Inter, commented: "The Champions League final marked the end of a chapter, and now a new one begins. "That's football - constant perseverance, belief in hard work and a project. And we're on that path now. We have great confidence in what Cristian Chivu can bring. I know him personally - we were team-mates - and I can say he's a wonderful person. We know he'll do a great job here. This Club World Cup is a great test for all of us."
