Former Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana announces retirement
PAMedia/dpa London Former Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana says he has 'no regrets' after calling time on a playing career spanning nearly 20 years. The 37-year-old represented Southampton, Bournemouth, Liverpool, Brighton & Hove Albion and England, earning 34 caps and scoring three goals for his country, including the goal in Sam Allardyce's only England game in charge - a 1-0 victory over Slovakia. Lallana spent the majority of his career with Southampton, where he began his senior career in 2006, then returned for a second spell in 2024 after playing elsewhere for a decade, finishing his career with 283 games and scoring 60 goals across his two spells at St Mary's. Lallana wrote on Instagram: 'As I call time on my playing career, I do so with an overwhelming sense of gratitude and pride. 'I could not be more appreciative of the opportunities I've been given and the support I've received along the way. 'You owe so much to so many on a journey like this - it's impossible to name everyone, but to all those please know how grateful I am. I couldn't have done it without you. 'It's crazy to think this all began in the last millennium, when I signed for the academy in 1999. Since making my professional debut in 2006, I realise I've been blessed to live the dream that millions of people share.' Lallana also reflected on each of his clubs including Southampton, where he went on to become captain following the club's return to the Premier League in 2012, and Liverpool, where he made 178 appearances, scoring 22 goals and winning the Champions League and Premier League between 2014 and 2020. He then moved to Brighton, making 104 appearances from 2020 to 2024, before rejoining Saints on a one-year deal. Lallana made his England debut under Roy Hodgson in a Wembley friendly with Chile in November 2013, appeared in all of the first seven internationals of 2014 and was included in England's squad for the World Cup. He also represented England at the 2016 Euros, and scored his first international goal in September 2016.

Adam Lallana retires after illustrious playing career
Adam Lallana has called time on his 19-year long career. The former Liverpool, Southampton and Brighton midfielder announced on Instagram this Wednesday that he was hanging up his boots this summer. Although injuries took their toll across stages of his career, the 37-year-old still managed to accrue just under 600 appearances in the game and became a vital cog in Jurgen Klopp's early Liverpool side. Lallana made 178 appearances for the Reds, lifting the Champions League in 2019 in addition to the 2019/20 Premier League title. He said: "As I call time on my playing career, I do so with an overwhelming sense of gratitude and pride." "I could not be more appreciative of the opportunities I've been given and the support I've received along the way. "You owe so much to so many on a journey like this — it's impossible to name everyone, but to all those please know how grateful I am. I couldn't have done it without you. "It's crazy to think this all began in the last millennium, when I signed for the academy in 1999. Since making my professional debut in 2006, I realise I've been blessed to live the dream that millions of people share." "Southampton… the place where it all started, and fittingly where it ends. It's the club I ultimately owe everything to." Not one to sit still, Lallana has landed an immediate gig at his previous employers Southampton as a coach under new boss Will Still. He has a limited amount of coaching experience already, having taken up a player-coach role at the Saints under interim manager Simon Rusk after Ivan Juric got sacked in April.

Lallana retires after 'shining career'
What can I say about Adam? Having worked with him at the start of his career for eight years and at the very end of his playing career, I know one thing for sure - he worked hard to make the most of every bit of ability he had and I think he's the most laser-focussed, determined player I languid, silky playing style belied how seriously he took himself, his career and the game. We expect his sort of drive from big vocal captain-style centre-halves, but not necessarily from a winger who skips past players and looks will o' the inbuilt drive and determination to do well may have come from being slight as a youngster and having to take a few whacks, it may have come from dealing with and overcoming a heart condition and ulcerative colitis. But whatever the cocktail was, boy did it was good as a youngster breaking into Southampton's first-team and everyone knew he had talent. But he really started to shine after the club's worst period in 2009 when they went into administration, and he, as much as any player, was responsible on the pitch for Saints' renaissance and back-to-back promotions that returned them to the Premier League in he really hit a new level after the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino. The Argentinian gave him confidence, belief, and, through tougher physical training, an extra two yards of pace. Adam used that to terrific effect, for two years Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Jay Rodriguez were a terrific trio up front for Saints, and scored 61 Premier League goals between of course those performances led to international recognition (for all of them) and the attention of big clubs. Liverpool eventually took Lallana to Anfield for £25m in 2014 as the Saints player exodus happened. It was no surprise to any of us that he dealt with the big move with ease, and even less of a surprise that Jurgen Klopp would go on to praise him for his attitude and ability, with Lallana loving the intense style of play Klopp six years at Anfield, a Premier League medal, a Champions League medal and the accolade of being England player of the year in 2016, he then took on a senior leadership role in the Brighton dressing room and worked alongside the likes of Danny Welbeck, Lewis Dunk, and James Milner to set the dressing room culture for Brighton's ensuing will be gutted his career was affected by niggling injuries in the past few years, and he'll have hated ending his playing career with Southampton's woeful last season. But he now has a chance to grow and flourish as a coach at Saints and if he puts as much thought, knowledge and determination into coaching as he did as a player, I think we all know he's going to turn out pretty good.
