Former Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana announces retirement

Former Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana says he has 'no regrets' after calling time on a playing career spanning nearly 20 years.
The 37-year-old represented Southampton, Bournemouth, Liverpool, Brighton & Hove Albion and England, earning 34 caps and scoring three goals for his country, including the goal in Sam Allardyce's only England game in charge - a 1-0 victory over Slovakia.
Lallana spent the majority of his career with Southampton, where he began his senior career in 2006, then returned for a second spell in 2024 after playing elsewhere for a decade, finishing his career with 283 games and scoring 60 goals across his two spells at St Mary's.
Lallana wrote on Instagram: 'As I call time on my playing career, I do so with an overwhelming sense of gratitude and pride.
'I could not be more appreciative of the opportunities I've been given and the support I've received along the way.
'You owe so much to so many on a journey like this - it's impossible to name everyone, but to all those please know how grateful I am. I couldn't have done it without you.
'It's crazy to think this all began in the last millennium, when I signed for the academy in 1999. Since making my professional debut in 2006, I realise I've been blessed to live the dream that millions of people share.'
Lallana also reflected on each of his clubs including Southampton, where he went on to become captain following the club's return to the Premier League in 2012, and Liverpool, where he made 178 appearances, scoring 22 goals and winning the Champions League and Premier League between 2014 and 2020.
He then moved to Brighton, making 104 appearances from 2020 to 2024, before rejoining Saints on a one-year deal.
Lallana made his England debut under Roy Hodgson in a Wembley friendly with Chile in November 2013, appeared in all of the first seven internationals of 2014 and was included in England's squad for the World Cup. He also represented England at the 2016 Euros, and scored his first international goal in September 2016.

I've still got a lot of years ahead of me, so if I can keep staying humble and being a good person, that's the most important thing to me. 'I know I've taken a lot of experience from the games about the positive moments, the mistakes that I've made. I'm definitely more ready now for the next season. I just want to keep learning and keep improving. 'I want a legacy. I want to win everything there is to win in the game. I want to win trophies on the biggest stages whilst being a person that's always learning and stays grounded, which is so important.' He is the second Arsenal player to agree to a new contract this summer following defensive colleague Gabriel.

Ederson describes Manchester City exit rumours as ‘fake news'
PA Media/dpa Orlando Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson has dismissed speculation he could leave the club as 'fake news'. The Brazilian has one year remaining on his contract at the Etihad Stadium and has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia. The 31-year-old has spent the past eight years at City and helped the club win 18 trophies, including six Premier League titles and the Champions League. 'My future is here,' Ederson said. 'Some friends send me lots of news, but 99% is fake news. 'I understand you guys, you need the news, to put a 'like' on social media but there's a lot of fake news around my name. 'My head is here. It stays with City. It means everything to go back to the Premier League and to try to win the Champions League as well. My mind is staying in the club.' Ederson's comments come after number two keeper Stefan Ortega, who also has just one year remaining, refused to discuss his future when asked during City's Club World Cup campaign earlier this week. The 32-year-old German has largely remained in Ederson's shadow during his three years at the club. 'It's quite early for that question,' Ortega told media in the United States. 'I can't say anything about that, it's too early.' City endured a frustrating 2024-25 season, failing to defend their league title after four successive triumphs and exiting the Champions League before the last 16. In response the club have been overseeing a squad overhaul and it is not yet clear whether either goalkeeper is part of the long-term plans or if any contract negotiations are under way. Asked specifically about Ederson at his press conference to preview Thursday's game against Juventus in Orlando, manager Pep Guardiola said he did not know whether the Brazilian would stay beyond next season. He said: 'I don't know, but I am so pleased with what I am seeing in the training sessions and he is with us. 'He has had a spectacular decade with us and his contribution has been massive in many aspects.'

Liverpool complete signing of Bournemouth left-back Kerkez
PA Media/dpa London Liverpool have completed the £40 million ($54.9 million) signing of Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez on a five-year contract. The 21-year-old is the club's third arrival this summer, following Jeremie Frimpong and club-record transfer Florian Wirtz. And with Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili joining next month in a deal done 12 months ago there will be more than £200 million of new talent present when pre-season training starts in a fortnight. Kerkez, who links up with fellow Hungary international Dominik Szoboszlai at Anfield, is viewed as the long-term successor to 31-year-old Andy Robertson, who is a target for Atletico Madrid. It is understood the club have no intention of forcing out the Scotland international, who started in 29 of his 33 Premier League appearances last season but is in the final year of his contract. Liverpool new boy Kerkez said: 'I'm really happy. It's a real honour for me, a privilege to come to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world, (the) biggest club in England. I'm just really, really happy and excited. 'After this, I'll go home and in my hometown enjoy a few days, and then I can't really wait to come back and put the training kit on and start to train and prepare for the season.' Kerkez made 74 appearances for Bournemouth after joining from AZ Alkmaar two years ago and has been shortlisted for the 2024-25 PFA Young Player of the Year award. 'I just want to thank everyone for really showing me big love, even before it will be announced now,' the 23-cap Hungary international added. 'And keep supporting the team like you support always, because you're the biggest fan base in the world.
