Dubai: Emirates uses AI-powered engine monitoring to cut costly flight diversions

Dubai's flagship carrier Emirates is tapping into the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to help the airline enhance flight safety, monitor engine health in real time, and reduce costly flight diversions, a senior official revealed. 'We're using AI to predict the turbulence en route from one destination to another. Using AI is not only for the benefit of the company but also for enhancing the safety of operations. "We are able to use AI to predict the health of the engine, and how it is performing, and that helped us a number of times to avoid diversions of an aircraft because we were able to continue operating that aircraft for the specific diagnosis and live monitoring it,' said Adel Al Redha, deputy president and chief operations officer of Emirates. He was speaking during the ForsaTek 2025 exhibition and conference last week. The event featured over 40 in-house and partner showcases, strategically organised across the innovation pipeline spectrum, from early-stage research and prototyping to proof-of-concept trials, and fully launched initiatives being scaled up. AI adoption is on the rise across all industries, and airlines are no exception. From improving operational efficiency to enhancing customer service, companies are exploring new ways to harness data and automation. Looking ahead, Al Redha stressed the importance of strengthening real-time data capabilities to further improve services. For example, he said accurate data can help airlines load the right quantity of food on board — preventing waste and saving millions of dirhams annually. On the use of passenger data, Al Redha reassured that Emirates is aligned with government regulations. He noted that the airline is already taking steps to regulate and govern the use of public data. 'The more we rely on technology, the higher the level of cybersecurity we need to invest in and ensure that we are safeguarding the operations,' he added. As the technology advances, Al Redha noted that the company will upscale its staff as the airline will increasingly adopt generative artificial intelligence (AI). 'We're going to rely on generative AI. That's going to make some of our jobs easier and information much more faster accessible. Some of the people may not be up to the same level of skill as others. We will have to examine certain staff level skills, and upskill them to be able to manage or deal with what the new norm is going to be,' he said.

Emirates says full shift from DXB to Al Maktoum Airport will take up to 3 days

Emirates will be migrating operations from Dubai International Airport (DXB) to the upcoming Al Maktoum International Airport in a maximum of three days after the latter is functional, said a senior official on Monday. 'There will be a short period of time where we're going to migrate from here (DXB) to there (Al Maktoum). The system and the part there will be completely independent of what we have here. The operation of it might be done overnight. I don't think it'll be a prolonged transition period between DXB and Al Maktoum Airport. Once we have everything functional there, it's just a matter of shutting down here and moving there. It might require, I think, a day or two, maximum, three days,' said Adel Al Redha, deputy president and chief operations officer of Emirates Airline. He was speaking during a fireside chat at the ForsaTEK 2025 – an annual event hosted by Emirates Group to showcase its innovation, proof of concepts, technology and start-up ecosystems. In April 2024, Dubai announced that all operations at Dubai International will relocate to Dh128-billion Al Maktoum Airport upon completion in 10 years. As reported by Khaleej Times earlier, Dubai has already started awarding contracts for the construction of the new airport which will have a capacity to handle 260 million passengers annually when it is fully operational. Al Redha also gave a peek into how passengers will seamlessly complete the immigration process.

Autism Awareness Month: Emirates' first successful ‘travel rehearsal' rolled out across 17 cities

As part of Autism Awareness month, several milestones have been achieved on Emirates' journey to make travel more accessible for all. One year after Emirates' first successful "travel rehearsal," the programme is now being rolled out across 17 cities — allowing children with autism to practice the journey through the airport in order to prepare for real flights. Emirates has also achieved its designation as the world's first Autism Certified Airline, with more than 30,000 cabin crew and ground staff now trained to support customers with autism. For the month of April, Emirates highlighted autism awareness to millions of passengers globally, showcasing a selection of movies, podcasts and TV shows about neurodiversity on its inflight entertainment system, ice. Adel Al Redha, Deputy President and COO, Emirates, said: "Emirates has been driving and facilitating good progress in accessible travel, and it is part of our operational strategy. We continue to work on this mission to make travel more inclusive. At the beginning of 2024, we were recognised as a Certified Autism Centre. We have upskilled our teams and I am pleased to say that we are now the world's first autism-certified airline, with 30, 000 frontline staff and cabin crew trained to support our customers with autism. Now we are also rolling out our Travel Rehearsal programme in cities across the globe, to break barriers and make travel accessible for everyone. This is part of our social and professional responsibility.' Globally, Emirates has started rolling out its travel rehearsal programme to 17 cities including Barcelona, Brisbane, Budapest, Cebu, Christchurch, Dubai, Durban, Luanda, Madrid, Manila, Mauritius, Manchester, Montreal, Nice, Oslo, Paris and Toronto, with more destinations committing to the programme every month. The Travel Rehearsal concept first began in 2023, as a community collaboration between Emirates, Dubai's Department of Economy and Tourism, Dubai Airports, the General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs, Dubai Police and Dubai Customs, and several schools and centres for autism in Dubai, whose feedback was invaluable to the process. Now on an international level, parents, therapists and teachers involved in the travel rehearsals have reported to Emirates that the experience has been invaluable in helping their child to have a safe and successful flight, by offering the comfort of preparation and familiarity, as well as trained staff to support. Emirates is introducing the travel rehearsal initiative in many cities on its network, with partnering airports, authorities, local centers, and foundations. Currently, this is not a bookable service and is available on an invitation basis in collaboration with accredited centers. WAM

Emirates Completes First Successful Travel Rehearsal Across 17 Cities

As part of Autism Awareness Month, Emirates has marked a series of significant milestones in its ongoing mission to make air travel more inclusive. The airline has officially become the world's first Autism Certified Airline™, with over 30,000 cabin crew and ground staff trained to support passengers with autism. A key highlight of Emirates' accessibility drive is the expansion of its Travel Rehearsal programme to 17 cities globally, including Dubai, Barcelona, Brisbane, and Toronto. Originally launched in 2023 as a community collaboration in Dubai, the initiative allows children with autism to simulate the airport experience—easing anxiety and building familiarity ahead of real journeys. 'Travel should be accessible to all,' said Adel Al Redha, Deputy President and COO, Emirates. 'This programme helps break down barriers and ensures a safe, supportive experience for every passenger.' Emirates is working with local authorities, schools, and autism centers to deliver the programme, which is currently offered by invitation through accredited partners. Feedback from parents, therapists, and educators has been overwhelmingly positive, with many citing the initiative as a game-changer for children who previously struggled with the unpredictability of air travel. Throughout April, Emirates also spotlighted neurodiversity on its inflight entertainment system, ice , featuring curated content such as movies, TV shows, and podcasts focused on autism awareness. With more destinations joining each month, the airline's efforts reflect a broader commitment to embedding accessibility into its operations—not just as a campaign, but as a core value.
