Orioles dealt another injury after losing Adley Rutschman
The post Orioles dealt another injury after losing Adley Rutschman appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Baltimore Orioles have been plagued by injuries this season. The ailments have contributed to a nightmare campaign as Baltimore is 10 games below .500 and 11 games back in the AL East. And the news just keeps getting worse for the team. After All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman was scratched from the lineup Friday, the Orioles were dealt another injury blow. Advertisement Jordan Westburg left the game against the New York Yankees in the third inning with discomfort in his left hand. Today the Orioles announced Westburg is day-to-day with jammed fingers, per MASN Sports' Roch Kubatko on X. Fortunately for Baltimore, X-rays of Wesburg's banged up hand were negative. It appears as if Wesburg will avoid another stint on the injured list. However, the Orioles weren't so lucky with their star catcher as Rutschman landed on the 10-day IL with an oblique strain. Jordan Westburg is the latest Orioles player to sustain an injury Daniel Kucin Jr.-Imagn Images Rutschman is the 10th Orioles player currently on the injured list. He joins key contributors Ryan Mountcastle, Tyler O'Neill, Jorge Mateo, Grayson Rodriguez and Kyle Bradish, who've all missed significant time this season. Advertisement While Westburg appears to have dodged a bullet with his ailing fingers, he's no stranger to the injured list. In 2024 Westburg landed on the IL with a broken hand that cost him 47 games and derailed an All-Star campaign. And earlier this year, he was placed on the 10-day IL with a left hamstring strain that sidelined him for 39 games. The 26-year-old infielder came off the injured list on June 10 and played well in his return, batting .256 with a .864 OPS and three home runs in 10 games. Now he faces yet another injury-related setback. Baltimore did recently get center fielder Cedric Mullins back from an IL stint. And the Orioles believe Tyler O'Neill and Jorge Mateo are progressing, as both are expected to begin minor league rehab stints soon. O'Neill, who's been out since mid May with a shoulder ailment, actually started a rehab assignment earlier this month but needed to be shut down after experiencing a setback. But manager Tony Mansolino believes he's healthy enough to resume the recovery process and could head back to the minors next week. Nationals catcher Ruiz placed on IL a day after getting hit on the head with a foul ball
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Washington Nationals catcher Keibert Ruiz was placed on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday, a day after getting struck on the head by a foul ball off the bat of teammate Josh Bell while in the dugout. The Nationals said Ruiz has a head bruise. Catcher Drew Millas was recalled from Triple-A Rochester. He hit .247 with four homers and 25 RBIs in 52 games. The foul ball hit Ruiz on a bounce. He grabbed his head with both hands and immediately left the dugout. He was replaced by Riley Adams. Ruiz had a CT scan after his team's 10-6 victory, Bell wound up hitting a sacrifice fly as part of a four-run fourth inning. It was the second time in five days a major league player got hurt in the dugout when nailed by a foul ball. Rays pitcher Hunter Bigge was carted off the field in a frightening scene and taken to a hospital after getting struck in the face when Baltimore catcher Adley Rutschman lined a ball into the Tampa Bay dugout last Thursday night. Bigge was placed on a backboard and gave a thumbs up before being driven by ambulance to a nearby hospital for tests. He never lost consciousness and was able to converse with first responders, Rays manager Kevin Cash said. ___ AP MLB:

Orioles place catcher Maverick Handley on concussion injured list a day after collision at plate
BALTIMORE (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles placed catcher Maverick Handley on the seven-day concussion injured list a day after he was knocked over in a collision at the plate. The Orioles announced the move Monday ahead of their game against the Texas Rangers. Baltimore also selected the contract of catcher Chadwick Tromp from Triple-A Norfolk and transferred infielder Ryan Mountcastle to the 60-day injured list because of a strained right hamstring. Handley was hurt in the second inning Sunday against the New York Yankees when Jazz Chisholm Jr. tried to score on DJ LeMahieu's single to left. Outfielder Colton Cowser's throw was up the third-base line and Handley moved over to field the ball. He reached for the ball just as Chisholm ran past him. Chisholm attempted to veer inside, but couldn't avoid the collision and Handley was spun by the contact. The 27-year-old Handley left the game after a discussion with interim manager Tony Mansolino and head athletic trainer Scott Barringer. Baltimore replaced Handley with former Yankees player Gary Sánchez. Handley made his major league debut on April 29. The Orioles remain without All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman, who strained his left oblique and is on the injured list for the first time in his major league career. ___ AP baseball:

Improved of late, the Orioles still face an uphill climb to avoid a lost season
A year ago the Baltimore Orioles looked like a dynasty in the making. Since then, they've been thoroughly mediocre, and even an improved stretch recently hasn't helped their outlook much for 2025. After losing two of three to the Yankees in New York, the Orioles are 11 games under .500. They've gone 17-10 over their last 27, so perhaps the worst is over, but over the last 162 regular-season games, Baltimore is 75-87. It's a remarkable decline for a team that won 101 games in 2023, started 49-25 last year and had a core of standouts that was young and cost controlled. Injuries have been a major factor, with catcher and former No. 1 overall draft pick Adley Rutschman the latest big name to go on the IL. Right-hander Grayson Rodriguez hasn't pitched at all this year. Zach Eflin only has made 11 starts with a 5.46 ERA, and outfielder Colton Cowser and infielder Jordan Westburg have missed significant time as well. The front office has received little sympathy following an offseason in which ace Corbin Burnes departed and the Orioles replaced him with stopgap solutions on one-year deals. Although Baltimore is just 6 1/2 games out of a postseason spot, FanGraphs isn't a believer, giving the Orioles just a 3.7% chance of making the playoffs. Baltimore is one of five 2024 postseason participants that would miss out if this season ended today. Here are the others: SAN DIEGO (42-35 record, 39.3% postseason chance according to FanGraphs): The Padres are a half-game behind resurgent Milwaukee for the last spot in the National League playoffs. San Diego has been treading water since a 23-11 start, and its division just became more interesting after San Francisco acquired Rafael Devers. CLEVELAND (39-37, 34.1%): The Guardians are tied for the final American League spot but would lose a head-to-head tiebreaker to Seattle if the season ended now. Detroit has opened an 8 1/2-game lead in the AL Central, so unless Cleveland can cut into that significantly, it'll be a wild card or bust for the Guardians down the stretch. ATLANTA (35-41, 27.3%): The talent is there, but this past week was typical for the 2025 Braves, who followed up a three-game sweep of the Mets by losing two of three to Miami. KANSAS CITY (38-40, 20.0%): Bobby Witt Jr. can only do so much — only the Pirates have scored fewer runs than the Royals. But the bar in the AL is low, and Kansas City can probably stay in the mix. Trivia time In honor of the NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder, name the five current major league franchises that have won the World Series in multiple cities. Line of the week Clarke Schmidt threw seven hitless innings for the New York Yankees in their 9-0 win over Baltimore. The Orioles managed only one hit on the day — against the New York bullpen. Comeback of the week The Orioles led 8-0 in the third inning at Tampa Bay before the Rays stormed back to win 12-8. Tampa Bay had a 2% chance to win at the start of the third according to Baseball Savant. Yennier Cano allowed four runs in the fifth to tie the game, and he was sent down to the minors later in the week. Andrew Kittredge then allowed four in the seventh. That's the issue for the Orioles. Will their pitching allow the kind of hot streak they'd need to jump back into the playoff race? Trivia answer The Athletics (Philadelphia and Oakland), Braves (Boston, Milwaukee and Atlanta), Dodgers (Brooklyn and Los Angeles), Giants (New York and San Francisco) and Twins (Washington and Minnesota).
