Orioles dealt another injury after losing Adley Rutschman

The post Orioles dealt another injury after losing Adley Rutschman appeared first on ClutchPoints.
The Baltimore Orioles have been plagued by injuries this season. The ailments have contributed to a nightmare campaign as Baltimore is 10 games below .500 and 11 games back in the AL East. And the news just keeps getting worse for the team. After All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman was scratched from the lineup Friday, the Orioles were dealt another injury blow.

Jordan Westburg left the game against the New York Yankees in the third inning with discomfort in his left hand. Today the Orioles announced Westburg is day-to-day with jammed fingers, per MASN Sports' Roch Kubatko on X. Fortunately for Baltimore, X-rays of Wesburg's banged up hand were negative.
It appears as if Wesburg will avoid another stint on the injured list. However, the Orioles weren't so lucky with their star catcher as Rutschman landed on the 10-day IL with an oblique strain.

Rutschman is the 10th Orioles player currently on the injured list. He joins key contributors Ryan Mountcastle, Tyler O'Neill, Jorge Mateo, Grayson Rodriguez and Kyle Bradish, who've all missed significant time this season.

While Westburg appears to have dodged a bullet with his ailing fingers, he's no stranger to the injured list. In 2024 Westburg landed on the IL with a broken hand that cost him 47 games and derailed an All-Star campaign. And earlier this year, he was placed on the 10-day IL with a left hamstring strain that sidelined him for 39 games.
The 26-year-old infielder came off the injured list on June 10 and played well in his return, batting .256 with a .864 OPS and three home runs in 10 games. Now he faces yet another injury-related setback.
Baltimore did recently get center fielder Cedric Mullins back from an IL stint. And the Orioles believe Tyler O'Neill and Jorge Mateo are progressing, as both are expected to begin minor league rehab stints soon.
O'Neill, who's been out since mid May with a shoulder ailment, actually started a rehab assignment earlier this month but needed to be shut down after experiencing a setback. But manager Tony Mansolino believes he's healthy enough to resume the recovery process and could head back to the minors next week.

WNBA Used One Word to Describe Kayla Thornton's Play Against Chicago Sky

WNBA Used One Word to Describe Kayla Thornton's Play Against Chicago Sky originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The expansion Golden State Valkyries entered Friday's matchup against the Chicago Sky at .500 (7-7), eager to inch above break-even on their home court. Advertisement The Sky, meanwhile, carried a 4-10 mark into San Francisco, led by double-double machine Angel Reese, the WNBA's leader in rebounds (11.9 per game). However, during the first quarter of play, it was one of Golden State's players who drew attention from the WNBA. With the score 5-2 in favor of Chicago, Valkyries guard Kayla Thornton rocked a step-back 3-pointer, setting the tone early in a tightly contested affair. Immediately afterwards, the WNBA posted on X a clip of the highlight, calling her stepback "VICIOUS." Prior to the WNBA, Thornton starred at UTEP, ending her collegiate career as El Paso's all-time leading scorer (663) and earning first-team All-Conference USA honors in 2014 and twice landing on the C-USA All-Defensive Team. Advertisement Undrafted in 2014, she fought her way into the Washington Mystics roster in 2015, then spent six seasons with the Dallas Wings (2017-2022) before helping propel the New York Liberty to the franchise's first title in 2024. In December of last year, she was selected by the Golden State Valkyries in the expansion draft, a selection that immediately paid dividends. She entered Friday's contest averaging 14.9 points, 7.1 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game, pacing the Valkyries in each category. Her efforts earned her Western Conference Player of the Week honors in mid-June, and she is already making a case to become the Valkyries' first-ever All-Star.
