Preference modification phase for new academic year registration, admission to begin tomorrow

Muscat: The preference modification phase for registration and admission for the 2025/2026 academic year will begin tomorrow 'Tuesday' and continue until Thursday 31 July. The results of the initial sorting will be announced on the evening of Tuesday, 19 August, while accepted students will have the opportunity to complete their procedures starting from Tuesday, 19 August until noon on Sunday 24 August. Ahmed Mohammed Al Azri, Director General of the Higher Education Admission Centre (HEAC) at the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, stated that the number of available seats received from government higher education institutions, domestic scholarships, private sector grants for private higher education institutions, and external scholarships and grants from Arab countries for the 2025/2026 academic year has reached 29,252 seats. Of these, 16,884 seats are in various government higher education institutions, 607 are for external scholarships and grants, while the number of domestic scholarships and grants for study at private universities and colleges in the Sultanate of Oman stands at 11,761. He added that the preference modification phase is one of the most critical stages of registration, allowing students to finalize their program choices in the system for the initial sorting competition. He noted that the updates this year focus on two main aspects, namely admission procedures and academic programs. Regarding admission procedures, the center will launch this year a self-funded admission system, regulating student admissions at Sultan Qaboos University on a self-financed basis, in addition to educational specialization programs at private higher education institutions within Oman (Sohar University, Nizwa University, Dhofar University, and the University of Al Sharqiyah). The center has issued a student guide detailing all information related to this system, coinciding with the preference modification phase. Registration under this system will open after the initial sorting. Additionally, he noted that updates to the Unified Admission System include the launch of a complaint submission service on the Unified Government Services Portal, reinforcing government efforts to facilitate access to e-services and streamline transactions through a single platform. As for academic program updates, he pointed out that higher education institutions (scholarship providers) have aligned programs with labour market demands. New domestic scholarship programs for bachelor's degrees include Emergency Medical Services Science, Environmental Management and Practices, and Human Medicine at Dhofar University. Domestic scholarships have also been introduced for students with learning difficulties to study at private higher education institutions. Al Azri further added that new external scholarships have been introduced for specializations overseen by the External Scholarships Department at the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, such as Healthcare, Health Planning, Health Risk Management, Therapeutic Nutrition, Law, and Actuarial Studies. He said that the ministry, represented by the Domestic Scholarships Department, has also directed scholarships toward high-demand specializations in the labour market, including Process Engineering, Production Operations, Occupational Health and Safety, Welding, Mining, Renewable Energy, Quality Control Management, Tourism and Hospitality Management, and Legal Assistant Studies. Additionally, new professional diploma scholarships for Air Transport Pilot Licenses have been introduced at the Oman Aviation Academy. He noted that government higher education institutions have expanded their programs and specializations. The Military Technological College has increased its capacity this year, opening admissions for female students alongside males in various engineering disciplines (bearing in mind that these are not coupled with employment). The University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS) has added a new engineering specialization at its branch in Musandam Governorate. The university has also introduced a an advantage for social security family students, allowing them to apply without allocated seats in engineering programs; upon acceptance, they may choose the nearest branch of the university to their residence. He explained that the Higher Education Admission Centre had earlier announced the trial sorting results this month, noting some common errors among applicants. Al Azri emphasized that students can avoid these issues, which negatively impact their admission chances—particularly high-achieving students. The trial sorting results showed that 1,936 students with an 80% grade or higher did not receive a preliminary program offer. 76% of them had listed too few preferences, focusing on highly competitive, limited specializations. Additionally, 247 students with a 90% grade or higher did not receive a preliminary offer, with 84% of them listing fewer than 30 preferences. This highlights the need for students to include more program options and diversify their choices across institutions and disciplines. In conclusion, Al Azri urged students to maximize their program selections (meeting admission requirements) and prioritize them by preference to enhance their chances of securing a seat. He also stressed the importance of diversifying choices across institutions and specializations and encouraged following the center's website for updates on registration and admission stages.

Meritorious students fear disqualification under new CET rules

The State Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell has extended the deadline for registration for engineering (BE) and MBA courses. The last date to apply for BE courses is now July 12, while for MBA, it is July 11. The earlier registration deadline for both the courses was July 8. The deadline has been extended because many students have not yet completed their applications, CET Cell officials stated. The application process began on June 28 and till July 8, 2,27,358 applications had been received for engineering courses, with 1,70,601 students completing the application process by paying the fees. (REPRESENTATIVE PHOTO) The provisional merit list will be released on July 15, followed by the final merit list on July 21. The application process began on June 28 and till July 8, 2,27,358 applications had been received for engineering courses, with 1,70,601 students completing the application process by paying the fees. For the MBA programme, 59,554 students have registered, while 33,338 have completed the application process. Students will be able to submit their grievances regarding the provisional merit list from July 16 to July 18. The schedule for further CAP (Centralised Admission Process) rounds will be announced on the official website soon. Meanwhile, the new admission rules introduced this year by the state higher and technical education department have sparked dissatisfaction among sections of the students. Under these rules, if a student gets a seat from any of their top three preferences in the second round, they are eliminated from further rounds. In the third round, this rule applies to the top six preferences. Ajinkya Palkar, representing the Pune branch of the National Youth Congress (SP), has submitted a formal demand to the state CET Cell, seeking immediate withdrawal of the new rules. He explained why: 'Suppose in the third round, the cut-off for a particular branch in a college is 90%. Ideally, students scoring 89%, 88%, 87%, and so on should be considered for admission in the next rounds. However, due to the new rules, these meritorious students will be disqualified, and the seats will be allotted to students with comparatively lower scores.' Agreeing with him, many students and their parents are of the view that this change can force students to accept seats in colleges with high cut-offs, even when better opportunities might come in later rounds. In such cases, students with higher merit may be disqualified, while those with lower marks can secure admission. 'In the name of efficiency, the system is punishing the most deserving students,' a parent said. CET Cell officials, however, stated that the changes have been introduced to speed up the admission process.

1.4 lakh applicants make it to polytechnic final merit list

PUNE: The Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) on July 8 announced the final merit list for admissions to polytechnic diploma courses across the state. A total of 1,40,850 applications have been included in the list. This includes 1,40,286 applications from within Maharashtra and 564 from other states. Directorate of Technical Education on July 8 announced final merit list for admissions to polytechnic diploma courses across the state. ((PIC FOR REPRESENTATION)) The polytechnic stream, chosen by students after Class 10, has been gaining popularity in recent years, especially among high-performing students. This can be gauged by the fact that five students, who scored a perfect 100% in the 10th board exams, have applied for admission to diploma courses this year. These five students are Ravan Harshada Hemant from Kolhapur, Sontakke Arnav Arvind from Latur, Lahane Manthan Shrikant from Latur, Sawant Chaitanya Krupesh from Sindhudurg, and Deshmukh Urvi Kuldeep from Latur. Additionally, 9,686 students with over 90% marks, are part of the final merit list. With the final list released, students must now fill their college and course preferences between July 8 and July 10. According to Dr. Vinod Mohitkar, director, DTE, the admission process will follow a new rule structure this year, with four Centralised Admission Process (CAP) rounds. Candidates need to log in to their accounts to check their final merit number and make sure their personal details like name, gender, marks, and reservation category are correct. The DTE has clearly said that if anyone gets admission using false or wrong information, their admission will be cancelled. 'For the first CAP round, allocation will be based on the student's top preference. In the second round, allotment will be from the top three choices, and in the third round, from the top six. If a student is allotted any of the preferred colleges, they will be required to take admission. Hence, students must enter their preferences carefully,' said Dr. Mohitkar. The DTE Maharashtra will conduct three rounds of counselling for admission to polytechnic courses. These admissions are for the first year of the three-year full-time diploma in Engineering and Technology programmes. The programmes are offered at government, government aided, university managed, and private colleges. Seats will be allotted to students through the CAP rounds. The Centralised Admission Process (CAP) for polytechnic courses will follow a structured schedule, beginning with the preference-filling phase from July 8 to July 10. This will be followed by the announcement of the first round merit list on July 12, and admissions for this round will take place from July 13 to July 15. Subsequently, vacant seats for the second round will be declared on July 16, and students can fill their preferences for the second round between July 17 and July 19. The second round merit list will be published on July 21, with admissions scheduled from July 22 to July 24.

DTE releases provisional merit list for polytechnic admissions, extends registration & confirmation deadline to July 4

PUNE: The Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) on Tuesday, July 2, released the provisional merit list for polytechnic admissions. The list includes candidates from Maharashtra as well as Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh migrant categories. DTE releases provisional merit list for polytechnic admissions, extends registration & confirmation deadline to July 4 Candidates can view the 'DTE Polytechnic Merit List 2025' by logging in to the official admission portal at Once logged in, the provisional merit list will be available for download. The DTE has invited grievances and corrections from July 3 to 5 during which time, candidates can raise objections regarding any errors in the merit list. Depending on their mode of application, students can either submit grievances online or visit the nearest designated facilitation centre along with the supporting documents. In cases where multiple candidates have secured the same rank, the marks obtained in maths, followed by the marks obtained in science and English will serve as tie-breaker. Earlier on July 1, the DTE extended the registration and confirmation deadline for students seeking admission to first-year engineering diploma (polytechnic) courses for the academic year 2025-26 till July 4 so that only candidates who confirm their applications by July 4 will be eligible for the final merit list, scheduled for release on July 7. Those who registered until June 30 have been considered for the current provisional list. According to official data, 158,876 students registered for diploma admissions by June 30 out of which, 138,298 candidates successfully confirmed their applications by paying the fees. The additional three-day window is expected to further increase the participation of candidates. Originally, the application process began on May 20 with a closing date set for June 26 which was later extended to June 30. Despite a large number of registrations, several students failed to confirm their applications by paying the required fees and subsequently appealed for more time. Responding to these appeals, higher and technical education minister Chandrakant Patil extended the deadline till July 4 as the final opportunity for students to apply. Only those who complete and confirm their applications within this period will be considered for inclusion in the final merit list. 'We want to ensure that no student loses out on academic opportunities due to technical or procedural delays,' Patil said. This year, admissions will be conducted through a Centralised Admission Process (CAP) comprising four rounds. In round 1, students can fill in only their first preference; in round 2, up to three preferences are allowed; in round 3, students must submit at least six preferences; and in round 4, filling in all available preferences is mandatory. Patil urged students to actively participate in each round by carefully submitting their preferences to ensure a smooth and transparent admission process. This year, the polytechnic admission process is being closely watched due to a greater number of applications and changes in the merit evaluation criteria. For more details and updates, students are advised to regularly check the official DTE website.
