49ers' Jauan Jennings taking a non-Brandon Aiyuk approach to contract demand, for now
Jauan Jennings isn't prepared to go all Brandon Aiyuk on the San Francisco 49ers. At least not yet. A year after Aiyuk requested a trade before training camp, feigned back and neck injuries to avoid summer practices and took to social media to voice his displeasure, it appears Jennings, Aiyuk's fellow wideout, won't take a scorched-earth approach when it comes to angling for a contract extension. After the 49ers reported to training camp Tuesday, general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed that Jennings took his physical Monday, hadn't requested a trade and had indicated that he would participate in the first practice of camp Wednesday. 'I don't want to speak for Jauan, but we had a good visit and I anticipate him being out there,' Lynch said. 'You guys know our feelings on J.J. He embodies what we think a Niner is all about. He plays the right way. We love him. … We're not going to get into the contract stuff and all that — that takes care of itself. We love him and he's here.' Has there been dialogue about an extension between Jennings and the front office? Lynch didn't bite: 'We love him and he's here,' he repeated, smiling. Last week ESPN reported that Jennings, 28, would request a trade if an agreement on a contract extension wasn't reached by the start of training camp. However, Lynch indicated that Jennings hadn't communicated a desire to be traded to the team, saying he 'saw the same tweet you guys saw.' Jennings signed a two-year, $15.4 million extension last year, and he's presumably seeking a big raise after posting the biggest numbers of his four-season career. Jennings entered last season primarily known for his ferocious blocking and knack for making clutch third-down catches before he had 77 catches for 975 yards and six touchdowns. Jennings had 78 catches for 963 yards and seven touchdowns in his first three seasons. In 2024, Jennings had two games in which he had 10-plus catches. Only five other players in franchise history have had multiple 10-catch games in their career. 'I love J.J. and what he brings to our team and to myself as a quarterback,' Brock Purdy said. 'Obviously, we've had so much success together. Any time you see something like this going on, as a player it's like, 'Let's figure out something' so he can get back on the field and continue to do what we've done.' Purdy's response suggested he wasn't aware that, unlike Aiyuk in 2024, Jennings plans to participate in training-camp practices. Last year Aiyuk staged a so-called 'hold-in,' saying his injuries prevented him from practicing so he didn't get fined, before the 49ers threatened to suspend him for conduct detrimental to the team. Aiyuk ended the lengthy impasse by signing a four-year, $120 million extension in late August. Before Jennings' demand for a new deal, it appeared the 49ers would avoid the contract strife that's marked most of their recent offseasons. This spring, they signed Purdy, tight end George Kittle and linebacker Fred Warner to lucrative extensions before June. Asked about the latest contract drama involving Jennings, Shanahan said such situations could be avoided only if the 49ers front office caved to players' demands. 'I don't call that drama,' Shanahan said. 'I call that business. If you want to avoid all drama, just be extremely bad at business. And just be ridiculous on everything and I guess there'd be no drama until you tear your team apart doing that. But we've got a great relationship with these guys. … We'll do everything we can to make it work out. But it's not always easy to make it work out.' Jennings could have leverage in negotiations given the state of the 49ers' wide receiver corps. Aiyuk had knee surgery in November and Shanahan said Tuesday that he was hopeful he could return during the first half of the regular season. Meanwhile, Ricky Pearsall, last season's first-round pick, has a hamstring injury that will sideline him for the start of camp, and nine-year veteran Demarcus Robinson could face a season-opening suspension due to a DUI arrest. With Aiyuk and Pearsall sidelined, the 49ers were poised to have just three wideouts with at least 60 career catches available for their first camp practice before they signed Equanimeous St. Brown on Tuesday. St. Brown has 63 catches for 928 yards and two touchdowns in six seasons.

John Lynch: 49ers 'not anywhere close' to having a timeline for Brandon Aiyuk to practice
San Francisco wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk suffered a torn ACL and MCL in Week Seven of last season, and he's not close to returning. And not even close to knowing when he'll be ready to return. General Manager John Lynch said today that the 49ers are 'not anywhere close to having a concrete timeline' on when Aiyuk will be able to practice. Aiyuk is reportedly expected to miss at least the first four games of the regular season while he continues to rehab the knee. That would indicate he's still months away from being 100 percent. The 27-year-pld Aiyuk had the best season of his career in 2023 and was rewarded with a four-year, $120 million contract extension just before the start of the 2024 regular season. But his production had slipped in 2024 even before his season was cut short by the knee injury. The 49ers will hope to get him back, and get him back to his previous form, at some point in the 2025 season.

49ers put WRs Brandon Aiyuk, Ricky Pearsall on PUP list
The San Francisco 49ers placed wide receivers Brandon Aiyuk and Ricky Pearsall on the active/physically unable to perform list on Friday. Aiyuk is still recovering from an ACL tear in his right knee that occurred against the Kansas City Chiefs on Oct. 20, 2024. He may not be ready when the regular season begins on Sept. 7 against the Seattle Seahawks. Pearsall (hamstring) missed most of the team's spring workouts due to his injury. Aiyuk, 27, had 25 receptions for 374 yards and no touchdowns over seven games last season after developing into a star over the previous two campaigns. Aiyuk caught a career-high 78 passes for 1,015 yards and a career-best eight touchdowns in 2022 and 75 balls for a career-high 1,342 yards in 2023. Pearsall, 24, caught 31 passes for 400 yards and three touchdowns last season as a rookie. He was shot in the chest during a robbery attempt in San Francisco on Sept. 4 and recovered to make his NFL debut in Week 7 against the Chiefs. San Francisco also placed four other players on the PUP list - offensive lineman Andre Dillard (ankle), defensive lineman Yetur Gross-Matos (knee), safety Malik Mustapha (knee) and linebacker Curtis Robinson (knee). The 49ers placed two players on the active/non-football injury list: Offensive lineman Ben Bartch and safety George Odum. Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved

49ers' Brandon Aiyuk 'Could Be Ready Week 1', Per Shocking Report
49ers' Brandon Aiyuk 'Could Be Ready Week 1', Per Shocking Report originally appeared on Athlon Sports. San Francisco 49ers' wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, fresh off signing a four-year $120 million contract signed last offseason, tore his ACL and MCL in Week 7. After undergoing surgery in October, the understanding had been that Aiyuk will start the 2025 season on the physically unable to perform list, meaning he'll be forced to miss the first four games on the schedule. Advertisement Now a report has surfaced that Aiyuk is ahead of schedule in his rehab and could get a shot at being healthy much sooner than expected. What we know for sure is that Aiyuk was a nonparticipant in the 49ers' offseason program at OTAs and minicamp. Head coach Kyle Shanahan also claimed his star receiver would not be ready to go for training camp, which is approaching quickly. Despite these indications, there has been no formal confirmation that Aiyuk will miss any amount of games, making NBC Sports Bay Area's report all the more interesting. "I hear he's doing really well," Matt Maiocco said during an interview on KNBR. "I hear that the knee is even ahead of schedule." Advertisement "Also, from what I understand, is it's not out of the question that he could be ready Week 1." That qualifies as rather shocking. It's important to remember that knee injuries take time, especially for someone like Aiyuk who is five seasons deep into his career. General manager John Lynch had a quote this offseason about how elite athletes like Aiyuk tend to recovery quicker than expected ... but that shouldn't be something relied on, encouraged or rushed. "They want to be extra cautious with him," Maiocco added. "Even though the timeline, everything being equal, might point toward, 'Hey, there's a chance Week 1,' and there still might be a chance Week 1 ... I think the feeling inside the organization has always been don't take any chances, start him off on PUP when they report to training camp on July 22, and then more than likely, just have that carry over into the regular season." Advertisement Aiyuk may be progressing nicely in his recovery, but no definitive statement from the 49ers about his status should not be taken as any indication of an early return ... no matter how exciting that could be. The 49ers have plenty of offensive weapons in George Kittle, Christian McCaffrey, Jauan Jennings and company to supplement the loss of Aiyuk if he starts on the PUP list. San Francisco will likely ensure a full recovery and hope the rest of the roster has put the team in a favorable spot before turning to the back half of the schedule with a healthy Aiyuk. Then the conversation will shift to whether he can return to that All-Pro form in time for a potential playoff run. For now, sitting the first quarter of the season is the smartest choice... Advertisement "And then, it's quite possible that he could be ready Week 5 or Week 6, getting up to speed quickly," Maiocco added. "But everything I'm hearing is that things are looking good, and that the progress is even ahead of where the markers were that the 49ers put on him when he had that surgery." Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Heading into the 2025 NFL season, the San Francisco 49ers are looking to get back to being a contender in the NFC. Just two years ago, the 49ers made a run to the Super Bowl. While they came up short against the Kansas City Chiefs, the future looked bright. Last season, injuries completely derailed the season for San Francisco. In 2024, the 49ers missed the playoffs. They have sat with that disappointment and frustration all offseason long. With the season coming up quickly, the team is ready to get back on the field and prove that they still belong among the NFC's elite. Simply plugging him back into the offense will make the 49ers a much more dangerous team. Another player coming back from an injury is wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. He tore his ACL last season and has been working hard to return for the 2025 season. To this point, there has been no concrete update about when he could get back on the field. Now, an update has been revealed. According to a report from Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, the expectation is that he will start the season on the reserve/physically unable to perform list, which would cause him to miss the first four games of the year. That being said, San Francisco has not ruled him out for Week 1 yet. "Even though the timeline, everything being equal, might point toward, Hey, there's a chance Week 1 — and there still might be a chance Week 1 — I think the feeling inside the organization has always been don't take any chances, start him off on PUP when they report to training camp on July 22, and then more than likely, just have that carry over into the regular season," Maiocco said. Back in 2023, he racked up 75 receptions for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns, showing legitimate No. 1 wide receiver potential. At 27 years old, Aiyuk should be handled with care. There is no reason to rush him back onto the field. Hopefully, he's able to return at the latest four games into the season. He'll be asked to handle a large workload within the offense and become a true go-to target for Purdy. For more San Francisco 49ers and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.
