Heading into the 2025 NFL season, the San Francisco 49ers are looking to get back to being a contender in the NFC.
Just two years ago, the 49ers made a run to the Super Bowl. While they came up short against the Kansas City Chiefs, the future looked bright. Last season, injuries completely derailed the season for San Francisco.
In 2024, the 49ers missed the playoffs. They have sat with that disappointment and frustration all offseason long. With the season coming up quickly, the team is ready to get back on the field and prove that they still belong among the NFC's elite.

Christian McCaffrey is back to full health. Simply plugging him back into the offense will make the 49ers a much more dangerous team.
Another player coming back from an injury is wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. He tore his ACL last season and has been working hard to return for the 2025 season. To this point, there has been no concrete update about when he could get back on the field.
Now, an update has been revealed.
According to a report from Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, the expectation is that he will start the season on the reserve/physically unable to perform list, which would cause him to miss the first four games of the year. That being said, San Francisco has not ruled him out for Week 1 yet.
"Even though the timeline, everything being equal, might point toward, Hey, there's a chance Week 1 — and there still might be a chance Week 1 — I think the feeling inside the organization has always been don't take any chances, start him off on PUP when they report to training camp on July 22, and then more than likely, just have that carry over into the regular season," Maiocco said.

Aiyuk signed a lucrative new deal with the 49ers last offseason. He played in seven games, catching 25 passes for 374 yards. Back in 2023, he racked up 75 receptions for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns, showing legitimate No. 1 wide receiver potential.
At 27 years old, Aiyuk should be handled with care. There is no reason to rush him back onto the field.
Hopefully, he's able to return at the latest four games into the season. He'll be asked to handle a large workload within the offense and become a true go-to target for Purdy.

Super Bowl Champion, Former Texas Star Retires At 33
Super Bowl Champion, Former Texas Star Retires At 33 originally appeared on The Spun. Just days after training camp opened up, the Cleveland Browns lost a veteran member of their defense to retirement. In 2015, the Philadelphia Eagles selected Jordan Hicks with the 84th pick. The former All-American at Texas had a nice run in the City of Brotherly Love and was a member of their Super Bowl team in 2017. Hicks left the Eagles in 2019 to sign a four-year, $36 million contract with the Arizona Cardinals. He then had a two-year stint with the Minnesota Vikings before taking his talents to Cleveland. On Friday morning, Hicks announced that his NFL journey has come to an end. "After 23 years of playing football, I'm officially retiring from the NFL," Hicks wrote in his statement. "Football has given me more than I could have ever imagined. Purpose, discipline, brotherhood, and a platform to impact others. But most importantly, it showed me who I am outside the game. "I leave this chapter with deep gratitude for every lesson, challenge, and victory. I'm proud of what I accomplished on the field, but even more proud of the man I've become because of it. To my teammates, coaches, fans, and most importantly my family, thank you for your unwavering support throughout this journey. I'm looking forward to this next season of life and all that it brings. I walk away with peace knowing I gave football all I had, and that the best is yet to come." At the end of Hicks' retirement letter, he let his fans know that "the best is yet to come." Hicks will finish his NFL career with 952 tackles, 16.5 sacks, 13 interceptions and 11 fumble recoveries. His best years were in Arizona and Philadelphia. Former Kansas City Chiefs safety describes team's "revenge tour" this year
As a member of the Kansas City Chiefs' Super Bowl LIV championship team, Tyrann Mathieu understands the culture that is built in the organization. Despite going 15-2 in the regular season last year, the Chiefs would come up short as they were throttled by the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX, and they now come into the 2025 season looking for revenge. Having retired earlier this week, Mathieu appeared on the 'Up And Adams Show' with host Kay Adams and described what a revenge season in the locker room could look like for Kansas City. "It's intense," Mathieu said. "There's this seriousness in there between coaches and players alike. They have to tap into that mindset in the spring. You can't save that type of stuff for middle of the season. I think it's all about mentality and attitude. If I know those guys like I think I know them, they haven't had a good night of sleep since they lost that game. I think Patrick (Mahomes) is motivated, (Travis) Kelce is motivated. Coach Reid and Spagnuolo, they probably haven't left that building. I could see those guys starting fast and playing with an edge." It may sound overblown to think that the Chiefs would be on a revenge tour after having won three Super Bowl championships since 2020, but with how last season ended for them, it makes sense. As a player who was in the locker room for one of the championship years, Mathieu would know first hand about the mindset they have coming into the year.
