Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi to hold its annual art exhibition from tomorrow

The Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi will organise its annual art exhibition from July 23. A showcase of the art of our times, the exhibition intends to encourage artists to present their works to a larger audience in a professional setting, interact with art lovers, and stay up to date with today's art trends — a platform for exhibiting the latest works of artists from the Tricity, professionals and students. The Akademi had invited entries from artists of the Tricity for the exhibition, both in student and professional categories, and a jury selected 162 works in both categories. Three artists in the professional category, Vishal Rawat (sculpture), Reena Bhatnagar (painting), and Pankaj Saroj (watercolour), received Rs 50,000 each, with merit awards for both professional and student categories. The works are diverse in mediums, treatments, subjects and philosophy, be it sculptures, paintings, photographs, graphics, printmaking, installations, drawings, with the artists experimenting with materials, presentation, use of colours, textures and subjects. The works, depicting many emotions, everyday life, human interactions, and journeys, both internal and external, strive to create a dialogue, with a room for interpretations and reflections. The exhibition will be on from July 23 to August 31, 11 am to 7 pm.

Sangeetha Nataka Akademi all set to open its own bookstall

Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi's long-standing dream of establishing a dedicated bookstall is finally getting realised. Minister for Culture Saji Cherian is scheduled to inaugurate the bookstall on the Akademi premises on Monday. The first publication of the Akademi was Venkitta Ramanīyam, authored by Ennapadam Venkita Rama Bhagavatar during Kavalam Narayana Panicker's tenure in 1964, six years after it was found. Despite bringing out 78 books over the years, spanning various streams of performing arts, the Akademi never had a dedicated space for book sales until now. The Akademi's books have until now been sold only through the Akademi office, its programmes, and online channels. The new bookstall will give scholars, students, and art lovers a single, year-round venue to purchase the Akademi's authoritative publications on music, theatre, and allied art forms. Alongside existing titles, eight new publications are in the pipeline, including the Malayalam translation of Indian Method of Acting by renowned theatre director Prasanna, a comprehensive history of the Akademi itself, and the complete Malayalam translation of Bertolt Brecht's plays. The bookstall will also stock Keli, the Akademi's monthly journal, Kerala's only dedicated arts periodical, as well as offer discounts ranging from 20% to 50% on books. Minister for Higher Education R. Bindu will also attend the inaugural ceremony.

Row over naming Sahitya Akademi hall after MT; demand to honour woman writer

THRISSUR: Cultural activists and writers in Kerala are divided on the plan to name the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Hall in Thrissur in memory of legendary Malayalam writer M T Vasudevan Nair. Sheeba Ameer and Thanuja Bhattathirippad, among others, had recently expressed their desire to have the hall named after a woman writer. The Kerala Sahitya Akademi headquarters at Palace Road, Thrissur, has halls honouring the legacy of poets like Changampuzha and Vailoppilli within the compound. But not a single memorial has been built for women. At the same time, the main hall at the Akademi has remained without any attribution to it. When the topic came up for discussion during the organising committee meeting for the Kerala Literature Festival, some participants raised the matter of giving a woman writer's name. Among the several suggestions put forth, one urged the authorities to name the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Hall after Lalithambika Antharjanam as a tribute to a woman writer who made immense contributions to Malayalam literature and inspired many women to write.

Honouring percussion traditions, National Rhythm Festival kicks off in Thrissur

Thrissur: National Rhythm Festival, organized by Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi, got off to a colourful start on Friday with the presentation of 'Idakka Vismayam', a percussion ensemble by six leading artists in the field led by Peringottu Subramanyan. The ensemble began with gentle rhythmic murmurs that gradually blossomed into thunderous crescendos. They played crowd-favourite melodies as well as devotional and a few western tunes too. It was followed by the presentation of Melappadam, by Kalamandalam Unnikrishnan and his ensemble, providing an unforgettable and soul-stirring experience. The musical journey began with the tenderness of the vaypattu, slowly awakening through the bold strikes of the chenda, and finally deepening in grandeur with the resonance of the maddalam. The third session on the opening day was the rare presentation of 'Double Thayambaka' on the mizhavu by renowned artists led by Kalamandalam Rajeev and Kalamandalam Vineesh. Akademi chairman Mattannur Sankarankutty formally inaugurated the festival by playing the thappu. The three-day festival is conceived as a tribute to the legendary tabla player Ustad Zakir Hussain , whose mastery over the percussion instrument has captivated the world for decades. A key highlight of the festival is the celebration of women percussionists. The festival, claimed to be first of its kind in the 67-year history of Akademi, will play host to a special session titled Penkaalangal (feminine tempos) Rhythmic traditions from across India, including the desert rhythms of the khartal, traditional folk percussion, lecture demonstrations, diverse performances, and short film screenings, are also forming part of the festival.
