Iraqi parliamentary session postponed amid row over Speaker Al-Mashhadani's remarks

Baghdad ( – A session of the Iraqi Parliament was abruptly postponed on Monday (July 14, 2025) after a heated verbal altercation erupted between Speaker Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani, his First Deputy Mohsen Al-Mandalawi, and MPs from the Coordination Framework. A parliamentary source reported that the dispute was ignited by recent televised remarks from Al-Mashhadani, in which he suggested that the country could soon witness demonstrations leading to an 'emergency government.' The argument led to Speaker Al-Mashhadani walking out of the session hall. While over 180 MPs were present, the Parliament Presidency later issued a brief statement officially postponing the session due to a 'lack of legal quorum.' In a significant escalation, the source revealed that MPs are now holding a meeting in the parliament's cafeteria to discuss gathering signatures for a motion to dismiss Al-Mashhadani from his position. The Speaker's comments have reportedly 'shaken the political scene,' with calls for an apology.

Iraqi Speaker faces ouster bid after Parliament clash

Shafaq News - Baghdad Iraq's Parliament postponed its session on Monday following a heated confrontation between Speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, First Deputy Speaker Mohsen al-Mandalawi, and several members of the Coordination Framework, a ruling coalition of predominantly Shiite parties. A parliamentary source told Shafaq News that 180 lawmakers had gathered for the session, the second since the legislature resumed following the summer recess on July 9. Tensions escalated shortly after the meeting opened, sparked by backlash over recent televised remarks by al-Mashhadani warning of possible public unrest and the emergence of an emergency government. The dispute further intensified, prompting al-Mashhadani to leave the chamber and leading to the indefinite suspension of the session. In the aftermath, lawmakers convened in the parliamentary cafeteria to discuss collecting signatures for a petition to remove the speaker from office. The move would not be unprecedented; former Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi was previously removed from his post following corruption-related accusations. Al-Mashhadani's comments, made during a Sunday appearance on Dijla TV, appeared to trigger the dispute. 'Any collapse in Baghdad would immediately ripple across other provinces. Demonstrations could erupt next month, and the country could be forced into an emergency option,' he warned. He also addressed the stalled legislation concerning the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), attributing the delay to external pressure. Al-Mashhadani claimed that the United States had blocked the bill from advancing in Parliament, expressing strong opposition to any effort to restructure the PMF.

Iraq receives more water from Turkey

Baghdad ( – Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani asked Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday to increase water releases to Iraq. During their meeting in Turkey, where they discussed relations between the two countries and issues of mutual interest, Erdogan agreed to Al-Mashhadani's request to release 420 cubic meters of water per second per day, starting Wednesday, according to a statement cited by the Iraqi News Agency (INA). Under the two countries' present leadership, Iraqi-Turkish ties are seeing prolonged success, according to Al-Mashhadani. This alliance has a long history and is founded on strong political, social, and geographic ties. The step will increase water flows along the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, delivering water to all Iraqis, particularly in the southern parts of the country that are experiencing drought and water shortages. According to official estimates, the water shortage in Iraq is becoming worse and has already reached seven percent. Iraq consumes more than 19.4 million cubic meters of water per day, compared to 18.1 million cubic meters that the country receives.
