BMS will not participate in general strike on July 9, says All India Organising Secretary

The Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) will not participate in the All India General Strike on July 9, the call for which was given by various trade unions, says B. Surendran, All India Organising Secretary of BMS. He was in the city as a part of a tour of North Andhra on Monday. While other trade unions are totally against the Labour Codes, brought out by the Centre, BMS welcomes certain clauses like the wage code and social security code, which are beneficial to workers, Mr. Surendran said in a chat with The Hindu. At the same time, BMS is opposed to the Industrial Relations Code and the Occupational Safety Health and Working Conditions Code, which are detrimental to the interests of workers, he said. 'Contract system' He felt that the legalisation of the 'contract system' under different names such as 'outsourcing workers' and contract workers was not suitable for India, which has the highest population. The government should realise that human capital is as important as money capital to run an industry or factory. Workers require permanent jobs and forming a trade union to safeguard their interests is a fundamental right of workers. BMS has sent its objections to the Union Minister of Labour, he said. 'Overstaffing in VSP' Replying to query, Mr. Surendran said that the Centre was taking fiscal measures to tide over the losses in Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP). The officials had recruited much more than the required number of contract workers. The production at the plant was not affected even after a few thousands of workers were terminated, indicating that there was huge overstaffing, he said. He, however, said that the manner in which the workers were asked to leave, had caused discontent among them. The non-involvement of trade unions in the process, and failure to give certain benefits to VRS employees was another cause for concern among the staff, he said and expressed optimism that VSP would not be privatised.

Make general strike on July 9 a success, leaders of All Party Trade Unions urge people

Leaders of All Party Tade Unions called upon workers and the general public to make the proposed All India general strike on July 9, a success. A meeting of the All Party Trade Unions was held at the CITU Office at Jagadamba Junction here on Tuesday. Condemning the 'pro-corporate' and 'anti-worker' policies of the Union government, the speakers alleged that 29 labour laws were amended and four labour codes were brought out to the detriment of the workers. They said, if these labour codes were implemented, the workers would lose their right to strike, right to form a trade union and their primary right to bargain for a fair wage. They noted that the general strike was being held to demand fixation of minimum wage for workers at ₹26,000, withdrawal of the plan to privatise Visakhapatnam Steel Plant(VSP), taking back the 4,000 contract workers, who were terminated from service in VSP, against privatisation of public sector LIC, banks, ports and airports, oil PSUs, defence, space and mines. They also sought bringing out a comprehensive Act to provide PF, ESI and insurance to unorganised sector workers like auto drivers, muta workers, pushcart vendors and motor workers. They also demanded filling up of the vacancies in government and public sector organisations. The speakers demanded that the minimum pension for EPS pensioners be fixed at ₹9,000 and a comprehensive Act be brought out to protect the interests of domestic workers. They said that as a run up to the general strike, from June 25 to 30, workers would distribute pamphlets at their work spots and in residential colonies to create awareness among the general public on the need to make the strike a success. Gate meetings would be held at all industries from July 1 to 4. A bike rally would be held in the city on July 5, and in the industrial area on July 7. A rally would be held from Dondaparthy to the Gandhi statue, near GVMC, where a public meeting would be held on July 9. A poster on the All India General Strike on July 9 was released on the occasion. AITUC district president M. Manmadha Rao, INTUC district secretary Eswara Rao, CFTUI All India president N. Kanaka Rao, IFTUI State secretary M. Venkateswarlu, APFTU district secretary K. Deva, Public Sector Coordination Committee convener K.M. Srinivas, co-conveners Jyothiswara Rao and Kumara Mangalam, and AITUC senior leader Sk. Rahaman were among those who participated.

Central Trade Unions postpone nationwide strike to July 9 in view of ‘serious situation' in country

The Central Trade Unions (CTUs) on Thursday evening deferred their proposed strike on May 20 to July 9 in light of the disturbing situation prevalent in the country presently following the India-Pakistan conflict. The decision to defer the strike was taken at the meeting of the Joint Platform of Central Trade Unions and Independent Sectoral Federations and Associations on Thursday, according to a statement. The meeting also took note of the unfolding political developments in the country after the heinous terrorist attack in Pahalgam killing 26 innocent people, and the response of the Indian Armed Forces in their combat strike actions. An official release from the Unions said, "Considering the situation in the country, it has decided to defer the All India General Strike scheduled on 20 May 2025. CTUs have decided now to hold the All India General Strike on 9 July 2025." The release alleged, "CTUs have noted with serious concern that even when the country is facing such a serious situation, the Government of India is aggressively pushing through the implementation of the labour codes, increasing working hours and curbing the trade union rights." It called for continuing the campaign about the strike among people.
