North Mississippi gets new service for forecasts, dangerous weather coverage. What to know
A new weather service is available in North Mississippi. An award-winning meteorologist has created his own apps and streaming channel to bring the community the latest forecasts and up-to-date severe weather coverage, like strong storms and tornadoes. Chief meteorologist Matt Laubhan is well-known in the Golden Triangle area. He's a 10-time Emmy winner and worked at WTVA for 14 years. His last day there was July 1. Mississippi LIVE Weather launched at midnight on July 2. By that afternoon, it was the most-downloaded free weather app in the Apple App Store in the nation. In his first broadcast at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, Laubhan thanked viewers for "demanding that we do something to take care of you in active and severe weather." He said the support to save his job and those of his coworkers was "humbling." Allen Media Group owns the local TV station. Earlier this year, the company announced, then walked back, plans to layoff many meteorologists around the nation. The idea was to consolidate resources with The Weather Channel, which it also owns, and shift to using Atlanta as the primary hub for forecasting and coverage. Last month, Allen announced plans to sell all 28 of its local stations to reduce company debt. Laubhan said during the initial taping that many people still at the station are not just friends but family, and he asked people to keep supporting them. This service is not to compete or be "vindictive" but to ensure everyone in the community gets the information they need. Currently, he is based out of a studio in Tupelo. Initial plans are to broadcast live at 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., with coverage of dangerous weather as needed and a few forecast updates throughout the day. "You will see some changes as time progresses, because this is a big project and some things are a work in progress," he posted on Facebook. The first broadcast covered North Mississippi. The area spanned north-south from Southaven to Kosciucko and east-west from Greenville to Hamilton. Mississippi LIVE Weather has "the most advanced weather analysis software on the planet," he said. The system uses detailed data from across the world. "I'm not planning on doing a paywall at all," Laubhan said, "especially when we start talking about severe weather coverage." He said that information saves lives. The goal, he said, is to be sponsor-driven, and there will be sponsorship opportunities. He explained that the product will improve over time, and former WTVA personalities, like Gabe Mahner, will be joining him as part of the expansion plans. If you aren't from that region but the name sounds familiar, Laubhan went viral in 2023 for praying during a broadcast while a deadly tornado bore down on Amory. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Atmospheric Science from the University of Kansas and worked in Texas before moving to Tupelo in 2011. He and his wife, WTVA anchor Emily Leonard, have two children. According to the Mississippi LIVE Weather, Laubhan is the only Certified Broadcast Meteorologist in North Mississippi. The American Meteorological Society has run the program for 20 years, and the AMS Certified seal pops up on broadcasts to alert the public. In June, AMS celebrated the 1,000th person earning the seal. The designation is limited to only a handful of people who have passed an exam and meet educational and career requirements to be a trusted, competent weather source for their community. North Mississippi Storm Chasers and Spotters, which has worked with WTVA for 13 years, announced that it will be working with Mississippi Live Weather. The group of more than 30 volunteer members works to track severe weather events by reporting ground conditions to multiple government and media connections, according to Historically, that's been the National Weather Service and Tupelo-based WTVA, though they also have worked with the Red Cross and other emergency management services. "Together, we will work tirelessly to ensure that all of you continue to receive the latest weather updates without the hype. We look forward to forging this new path with Mississippi Live Weather, and we hope you will join us on this journey," their statement read. Laubhan pointed to their network of cameras in North Mississippi as part of his initial broadcast, saying they plan to leverage those during severe weather events. He said the 501(c)(3) would likely welcome donations to help offset those costs. Website: The site has forecasts and a live weather radar. Byron Allen Puts His Local TV Stations Up for Sale
Byron Allen is putting his local TV stations up for sale. Allen's Allen Media Group (AMG) says that it has hired the investment bank Moelis & Company to market its local stations, which are comprised of 28 ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox affiliated stations in 21 markets. The company says that it will use the cash generated from any sale to 'significantly reduce' its outstanding debt. 'Six years ago, Allen Media Group began the process of investing over one billion dollars to acquire big four network-affiliated television stations. We have received numerous inquiries and written offers for most of our television stations and now is the time to explore getting a return on this phenomenal investment,' said AMG founder and CEO Byron Allen. 'We are going to use this opportunity to take a serious look at the offers, and the sale proceeds will be used to significantly reduce our debt.' The company has had to undergo cuts over the last year or so as it has grappled with a rapidly changing media environment. In February it refinanced its $100 million revolving credit facility to give it more runway to execute. The sale plans, cuts and refinancing are indicative of many of the issues facing linear TV companies, which are feeling the pinch of cord-cutting )local stations are beneficiaries of retransmission fees, just like cable channels) as well as a more competitive advertising environment, with tech and entertainment giants moving toward more automated ad buying. AMG has, in recent years, been a buyer, rather than a seller. Though most of its acquisitions have been modest in scale, and more focused on linear TV (some syndicated fare and the local TV stations being among the best examples). Allen, who began his media career as a comedian (he still practices the art after debuting on The Tonight Show at age 18), had turned AMG into a rollup vehicle in recent years, acquiring not only its stable of local TV stations but also brands like The Weather Channel and The Grio. The company also produces syndicated TV programming, including a slate of courtroom and judge shows, and Comics Unleashed, which is taking over the post-Late Show timeslot on CBS. The mogul has never been shy about expressing his ambitions. He told The Hollywood Reporter in a 2020 profile that he would love to own CNN: 'I'm close to the same age when Rupert Murdoch came here to America,' he said. 'He was in his 50s. I'm 59. What you see today will be 10,000 times bigger.' And last year, his company said that it made a $14 billion offer for Paramount Global, though it did not disclose who its strategic partners would be in any such bid. AMG has a streaming presence through FAST channels, a Weather Channel streaming option and offerings like HBCU Go, but the company is modest in scale compared to other independent TV companies, underscoring the challenges of making the jump to digital. Byron Allen Reaches Settlement in $10 Billion Lawsuit Against McDonald's Over TV Advertising
Allen Media Group chief Byron Allen has reached a settlement in the $10 billion lawsuit that he filed in 2021 alleging the fast food giant discriminated against Black-owned media companies in its TV advertising expenditures. Terms of the settlement were not disclosed. The deal averts a trial that had been scheduled to begin in federal court in Los Angeles next month. The sides announced the agreement in a joint statement issued late Friday. 'Our company's unique three-legged stool model relies on mutual respect, and we look forward to ESN's contributions to the betterment of our system.' Allen's suit hinged on his assertion that McDonald's habit of buying ad time on media outlets that target Black viewers was discriminatory because those purchases were made from a budget set aside for what the complaint described as 'the African American tier' of outlets. Allen's suit argued that the practice was damaging to Black media owners because that tier had more limited dollars available than the general tier that the company used for reaching broad-based audiences on the largest networks and platforms. The suit was filed by Allen Media Group's Entertainment Studios and Weather Group units. 'We are pleased to find a resolution that maintains our business relationship,' Allen said. 'During the course of this litigation, many of our preconceptions have been clarified, and we acknowledge McDonald's commitment to investing in Black-owned media properties and increasing access to opportunity. Our differences are behind us, and we look forward to working together.' For Sale: Byron Allen Puts Investment Bank In Charge Of Selling Television Stations
Allen Media Group founder Byron Allen is making moves to sell several owned television stations and has hired a high-quality investment firm to take the lead, The Los Angeles Times reported. Allen, the company's chairman and CEO, enlisted the help of Moelis & Co. to assist in the sale of his network-affiliate television stations after spending over $1 billion to grab outlets in smaller markets. In an announcement made June 2, Allen said the move is due to the company's desire to pay down debt. 'We have received numerous inquiries and written offers for most of our television stations, and now is the time to explore getting a return on this phenomenal investment,' Allen said. 'We are going to use this opportunity to take a serious look at the offers, and the sale proceeds will be used to significantly reduce our debt.' With nearly two dozen stations under its belt, including some in Northern California; Honolulu; Flint, Michigan; Madison, Wisconsin; and Tupelo, Mississippi, the media group has spent years — and significant funds — on station purchases to become the largest independent television operator in the country. Several of Allen's stations have proven their worth by featuring programming from one of the four major broadcasting networks: ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox. However, there has been some downfall in their endeavors. In 2024, the company implemented several layoffs as part of its company-wide growth strategy. As layoffs occurred at the Weather Channel, Entertainment Studios, and its HBCU Go Series, that wasn't the first time. Before that, Allen Media Group downsized to 'be more efficient.' According to CNBC, the media company has struggled financially for a while. It was reported that Allen Media Group had been late with their payments, worth tens of millions of dollars, to network owners, past the net 90-day due date. The reasons for the late payments were unclear. In early 2025, the company refinanced a $100 million debt facility. S&P Global Ratings announced that the company must maintain a high level of liquidity over the next 12 months, but also noted that the company continues to hold a junk rating, with the risk of future debt. Financial struggles can also be attributed to the marketing challenges that television stations have experienced over the years. As media buyers shift their budgets to digital platforms to cater to younger audiences, the market for television advertising is strained by competing with streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video.
