For Sale: Byron Allen Puts Investment Bank In Charge Of Selling Television Stations
Allen, the company's chairman and CEO, enlisted the help of Moelis & Co. to assist in the sale of his network-affiliate television stations after spending over $1 billion to grab outlets in smaller markets. In an announcement made June 2, Allen said the move is due to the company's desire to pay down debt. 'We have received numerous inquiries and written offers for most of our television stations, and now is the time to explore getting a return on this phenomenal investment,' Allen said.
'We are going to use this opportunity to take a serious look at the offers, and the sale proceeds will be used to significantly reduce our debt.'
With nearly two dozen stations under its belt, including some in Northern California; Honolulu; Flint, Michigan; Madison, Wisconsin; and Tupelo, Mississippi, the media group has spent years — and significant funds — on station purchases to become the largest independent television operator in the country. Several of Allen's stations have proven their worth by featuring programming from one of the four major broadcasting networks: ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox.
However, there has been some downfall in their endeavors.
In 2024, the company implemented several layoffs as part of its company-wide growth strategy. As layoffs occurred at the Weather Channel, Entertainment Studios, and its HBCU Go Series, that wasn't the first time. Before that, Allen Media Group downsized to 'be more efficient.'
According to CNBC, the media company has struggled financially for a while. It was reported that Allen Media Group had been late with their payments, worth tens of millions of dollars, to network owners, past the net 90-day due date. The reasons for the late payments were unclear.
In early 2025, the company refinanced a $100 million debt facility. S&P Global Ratings announced that the company must maintain a high level of liquidity over the next 12 months, but also noted that the company continues to hold a junk rating, with the risk of future debt.
Financial struggles can also be attributed to the marketing challenges that television stations have experienced over the years. As media buyers shift their budgets to digital platforms to cater to younger audiences, the market for television advertising is strained by competing with streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video.

The first major hurdle is the inefficiency of microtransactions. In a world where showing appreciation might mean tipping a creator $0.50 for a brilliant idea, traditional transaction fees can consume a crippling percentage of the payment, making direct support impractical. Second is the immense platform risk. Creators are held captive by the centralized giants—YouTube, Meta, Twitch—that control their access to their audience and their ability to monetize. For micropayments, some digital assets offer a solution. Imagine instantly and globally sending a podcaster a dollar for their work, with the creator receiving nearly the entire amount. This fosters a direct and more equitable relationship between creators and their supporters. For ownership, NFTs provide the breakthrough. Far beyond digital art, an NFT acts as an unbreakable, verifiable certificate of ownership for any digital asset. A musician can sell a limited-edition version of a song directly to a fan. A designer can sell custom furniture for an apartment in a virtual world, with the owner's rights recorded permanently on a blockchain. This transforms digital content from a licensable good into a true asset. Most importantly, these tools provide a path to independence. Social tokens, for example, allow creators to build their own sovereign economies, transforming their audience from passive followers into vested stakeholders who hold a direct interest in the creator's success. This is the ultimate answer to platform risk. Acknowledging The Hurdles On The Path To Adoption The path to this future is not without its challenges. The volatility of digital assets is a valid concern for anyone relying on them for income, which is why stablecoins will be the crucial bridge for everyday transactions. Furthermore, the user experience of many applications remains too complex for mass adoption. This, however, represents a massive business opportunity for SaaS and fintech companies to build intuitive wallets, payment gateways and creator platforms that abstract away complexity, making transactions as simple as using Apple Pay. Regulation, too, remains a developing landscape, but its progression is a sign of the industry's maturation—a necessary step toward building the trust required for a global system. The Mandate For Today's Leaders The seismic shift toward a creator-centric economy, accelerated by AI, is inevitable. The only open question is whether we will shackle it to an archaic financial system or empower it with digitally native tools. Leaders must look past the market noise and understand the fundamental economic utility being forged. The challenge is no longer about debating digital asset validity, but about architecting its integration into the future of work. The businesses and innovators who build the platforms, tools and financial products for this emerging world won't just be leading the next wave of tech—they will be building the foundations of our post-AI economy. US EPA proposes axing greenhouse gas rules that apply to motor vehicles
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed ending rules that address the contribution of motor vehicles to climate change. In a statement, the EPA said that its proposal would 'repeal all resulting greenhouse gas emissions regulations for motor vehicles and engines, thereby reinstating consumer choice and giving Americans the ability to purchase a safe and affordable car for their family while decreasing the cost of living on all products that trucks deliver'. Transportation is the largest source of direct greenhouse gas emissions in the US and for years the EPA has pushed vehicle makers in the US to reduce their contribution with steps that have included strict tailpipe standards and target a big transition to EVs and plug-in hybrids by 2030. In his presidential election campaign, Donald Trump pledged to roll back 'electric vehicle mandates' and boost the oil and gas industry. He framed his policies as about restoring consumer choice. They were also supported by the oil and gas industry and climate change sceptics, as well as parts of the US auto industry who have said tailpipe standards are too strict and costly to meet. The EPA's 'endangerment finding' in 2009 determined that CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions are a form of air pollution that the agency can regulate under the Clean Air Act, because climate change harms human health. The EPA's latest proposal would revoke the endangerment finding, seen by many as a cornerstone of US federal rules designed to tackle multiple sources of greenhouse gases – such as motor vehicles. Although CAFE standards remain in place, the US Department of Transport is reviewing them and Congress has already voted not to enforce big fines for vehicle manufacturer non-compliance. It has also voted to end the State of California's so-called 'EPA waiver' that meant it adopted tougher greenhouse gas policies than federal rules. The Trump administration has also scrapped consumer EV tax credits. 'With this proposal, the Trump EPA is proposing to end sixteen years of uncertainty for automakers and American consumers,' said EPA Administrator Zeldin. 'In our work so far, many stakeholders have told me that the Obama and Biden EPAs twisted the law, ignored precedent, and warped science to achieve their preferred ends and stick American families with hundreds of billions of dollars in hidden taxes every single year. We heard loud and clear the concern that EPA's GHG emissions standards themselves, not carbon dioxide which the Finding never assessed independently, was the real threat to Americans' livelihoods. If finalized, rescinding the Endangerment Finding and resulting regulations would end $1 trillion or more in hidden taxes on American businesses and families.' 'Thanks to President Trump's leadership, America is returning to free and open dialogue around climate and energy policy - driving the focus back to following the data,' said U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright. 'Today's announcement is a monumental step toward returning to commonsense policies that expand access to affordable, reliable, secure energy and improve quality of life for all Americans.' Ford Q2 Earnings Coming Up: Is That Fat Dividend Still Safe?
U.S. legacy automaker Ford F is set to release its second-quarter 2025 report tomorrow, after market close. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for Ford's Q2 EPS and automotive revenues is pegged at 34 cents and $41.7 billion, respectively. In the trailing four quarters, Ford surpassed EPS estimates on two occasions, missed once and matched on the other. Investors are now waiting to see if Ford can pull off an earnings surprise this time. But there's another big question on shareholders' minds— will Ford be able to sustain its attractive dividend payout, or will rising pressure from tariffs, massive recall costs and deep EV losses force a cut? Ford's Dividend Appeal Vs. GM & STLA One of the main reasons investors still hold on to Ford shares is its attractive dividend yield. The company currently pays a quarterly dividend of 15 cents per share and has increased its payout five times over the last five years. At more than 5%, Ford's dividend yield is significantly higher than the S&P 500 average of 1.16%. Its current payout ratio stands at about 40%, which might raise concerns for some about how sustainable the dividend really is—especially in a volatile environment. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research Ford's closest rival, General Motors GM, also pays a 15-cent quarterly dividend, but its payout ratio is a more conservative 6%. Facing macroeconomic uncertainty and tariff risks, General Motors paused its share buyback program in Q1—though it resumed repurchases this month. Italian-American auto giant Stellantis STLA went a step further by slashing its 2025 dividend by half compared to 2024, citing financial and geopolitical pressures. Stellantis also halted its buyback plan. What's Fueling Dividend Worries? While Ford doesn't have a share repurchase program in place, many investors are beginning to question whether its generous dividend is sustainable. And there's reason to worry. Ford has paused its full-year guidance, warning of a potential $2.5 billion hit from Trump's tariffs. While it plans to offset $1 billion of that impact, the remaining $1.5 billion—expected to hit in 2025—remains a big overhang. Additionally, Ford's Model e division continues to bleed cash. Losses from its EV business widened to $5.07 billion in 2024 due to pricing pressure and heavy investment in next-gen EVs. The company is expected to incur huge losses in its EV business this year as well. Massive spending on IT upgrades, product development and connectivity features is also weighing on cash flow. Adding to the strain, Ford has been leading the industry in vehicle recalls so far in 2025 and booked a $570 million charge in Q2 for related costs. While the company paid $3.1 billion in dividends last year, supported by $5.9 billion in net income, cash flow for 2025 is expected to drop sharply, raising real questions about how long Ford can keep up its high dividend payout. Is a Payout Cut Coming? Probably Not Yet Ford ended Q1 with roughly $45 billion in total liquidity, including about $27 billion in cash. The company has a target of returning 40-50% of its free cash flow to shareholders, showing its commitment to consistent payouts. Its high yield also offers a cushion against stock volatility and appeals to income-focused investors. In fact, what some may overlook is that Ford also has a history of paying out special dividends during strong cash flow years. Yes, the expected hit to cash flow from tariffs and EV losses could put pressure on Ford's dividend. But for now, we think the payout is safe. Ford has built a reputation as a dependable dividend stock and is unlikely to cut unless conditions worsen significantly. As it releases earnings tomorrow, investors will watch not just for tariff-related commentary, but for any signals around the dividend's future.
