Wolves close to agreeing deal for Almeria right-back Marc Pubill

Wolverhampton Wanderers are close to agreeing a deal to sign right-back Marc Pubill from Spanish second tier club Almeria. The fee for the 22-year old is expected to be in the region of €15million (£13m) plus add-ons. Vitor Pereira's side have been looking to strengthen the right-back position after Nelson Semedo's contract expired at the end of June. Semedo was offered a four-year contract by Wolves towards the end of last season and his departure has not yet been officially announced. Barcelona explored a deal to sign Pubill last summer, after a proposed move to Serie A side Atalanta collapsed. The 22-year-old made 40 appearances in all competitions for Almeria last season, scoring once and providing five assists. If the move goes through, Pubill will join new arrival Fer Lopez, who signed from Celta Vigo in June. Wolves are also confident of completing a deal for Fluminense winger Jhon Arias, while forward Jorgen Strand Larsen has joined the club permanently after spending last season on loan at Molineux. Advertisement Pubill has been capped up to under-21 level by Spain and started all four of the team's games at this summer's European Under-21 Championship, where they were knocked out in the quarter-finals by England. He was also part of the Spain squad that took home the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. After spending time in the youth systems of Gimnastic de Manresa, Espanyol and Levante, Pubill made his senior debut as a 17-year-old for Levante's B side in December 2020 and debuted for the first team a year later. He signed a six-year deal with Almeria in August 2023 and has gone on to make 63 appearances for the club, recording two goals and eight assists. (Ion)

Man Utd star who refused contract while Erik ten Hag was boss suffers huge fall from grace

Millions of youngsters around the world dream of playing for Manchester United, but one Red Devils academy ace infamously snubbed a contract offer from the Reds Former Manchester United academy starlet Martin Svidersky is still yet to make his senior debut for Almeria. Ever since his move to the La Liga side, the Slovakian youngster has been confined to reserve team duties. ‌ In the summer of 2022, the then-19 year old turned down a new contract with the Red Devils and exited Old Trafford for a fresh start with the Spanish club. Despite battling through numerous injuries while in the academy, United were keen to keep him and offered him an extension. ‌ At that time, the Red Devils had just gone through a dismal season, which resulted in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's dismissal and Ralf Rangnick taking temporary charge. Svidersky, who joined United at the tender age of 15 in 2018, could have had the chance to showcase his talents to Erik ten Hag. ‌ Instead, he opted for a switch to Spain with Almeria, but the move hasn't gone as planned for the midfielder. His failure to break into the first team is a huge fall from grace after he was tipped for big things when he arrived on the red side of Manchester. Upon signing for Almeria, he expressed his optimism to RTVS at the time, saying: "I have spent the last days in Spain, where my steps will continue. They will follow in the first Spanish league, La Liga. I have high expectations, it will be a new experience, a new country." However, his journey with Almeria got off to a rocky start when he was sent off on his debut for the reserves, despite their 3-0 victory over El Palo FC. His dismissal came after he had waited four months to get onto the pitch for the B team. ‌ After an 18-month stint, he was loaned out to Real Murcia, who ultimately decided not to make the move permanent. Svidersky did see more action with Almeria's reserves last season, clocking up 24 appearances. However, he might now be regretting his choice to leave Old Trafford. In October 2022, he explained his decision to turn down United's contract offer, believing that he would grow more as a player and individual in Spain. ‌ Speaking to Flashscore, he said: "I experienced a lot of nice moments in Manchester, but also difficult moments. They definitely strengthened me and taught me a lot. I tried to use every second. "I think I made the most of my time. It's true that I didn't manage to fulfil the dream I came for, I was very close, but I chose a different path. ‌ "I prioritised personal development over 'fame'. I met great people who I have stayed in touch with. Thank you also for my second parents from Manchester who have already come to visit me in Spain." The Slovakian's exit also meant missing out on what could have been an impressive season at United under Ten Hag, who led the team to a third-place finish and a League Cup victory. That season turned out to be Ten Hag's best with United, as they ended up eighth the next year before clinching the FA Cup. The former Ajax boss was dismissed at the end of October 2024 following a loss to West Ham United which left the team languishing in 14th place.

Arsenal boost as Sporting warned over Viktor Gyokeres replacement

Arsenal's efforts to finalise a deal for Viktor Gyokeres could be boosted as Sporting CP have been warned that they risk out on signing their first-choice replacement striker. Mikel Arteta's side have held extensive negotiations with Sporting over a deal for Gyokeres but the Portuguese champions have been standing firm over the add-on payments. Arsenal have offered a €63.5 million (£54.9m) up front, plus a further €10m (£8.6m) in bonuses. The Gunners are then proposing €5m (£4.3m) plus a further €5m in add-ons but Sporting are demanding €7.5m (£6.4m) as the first payment. Arsenal had hoped to reach an agreement before Arteta's squad leave London for their pre-season tour of Asia on Saturday. However, Sporting could now be under pressure to move quickly as they have been told by Almeria that Luis Suarez, their first-choice replacement for Gyokeres, has attracted interest from other clubs. Suarez was Almeria's standout performer in Spain's Segunda Division last season, scoring 27 goals in 41 league appearances, and Sporting want the 27-year-old Colombian to succeed Gyokeres. Speaking to CNN Portugal on Friday, Almeria's sporting director, Joao Goncalves, revealed that Sporting have not made an official approach for Suarez and talks are now 'moving forward' with other clubs. 'Luis has had his best season, he's in the best moment of his career – 31 goals is a number any forward wants to achieve,' Goncalves told CNN Portugal. 'We haven't had any official contact with Sporting to date. We haven't received any formal or informal contact, but we have with other clubs, and we're moving forward with negotiations with other clubs. We're managing our timing. 'He has a €40 million (£34.6m) release clause. To paraphrase Frederico Varandas – we're not asking for the value of the clause, but we're going to defend our interests.' Arsenal transfer boost as Sporting Lisbon issued threat over Viktor Gyokeres replacement

Sporting are eyeing Almeria's Luis Suarez as their ideal replacement for Viktor Gyokeres amid ongoing transfer discussions with Arsenal and a £63.5million deal that has continued to drag Almeria president Joao Goncalves has warned Sporting CP they are willing to sell striker Luis Suarez elsewhere as negotiations with Arsenal rumble on for Viktor Gyokeres. Sporting view ex-Watford frontman Suarez, who scored 31 goals in 43 appearances last season, as the perfect replacement for their Sweden international talisman. ‌ However, there is also interest from Europe with Sunderland and Burnley among a list of sides to have made initial enquiries. ‌ Sporting are only willing to proceed with a deal for Suarez once they have finalised the sale of Gyokeres to Arsenal, which is yet to have been ratified due to a difference of opinion over the potential add-ons involved in the £63.5million package. ‌ Almeria chief Goncalves has now revealed he's willing to move forward in negotiations with other clubs, telling CNN Portugal: "Luis has had his best season, he's in the best moment of his career. 31 goals is a number any forward wants to achieve. "We haven't had any official contact with Sporting to date. We haven't received any formal or informal contact, but we have with other clubs, and we're moving forward with negotiations with other clubs. We're managing our timing. "Fair value? He has a €40million release clause. To paraphrase Frederico Varandas - we're not asking for the value of the clause, but we're going to defend our interests." ‌ The Colombian international is under contract with LaLiga 2 outfit Almeria until 2029 but it's understood the player wants to join Sporting. Ultimately, that could prove key because even if Almeria agree a club-to-club deal with another suitor, Suarez may yet hold out for Sporting. Still, Goncalves' comments provide yet another motive for the Portuguese champions to quickly finalise an agreement with Arsenal for Gyokeres. The Swede is awaiting permission to travel to London to undergo his medical examinations. ‌ He will not be travelling with the Arsenal squad to Singapore today for their pre-season tour of Asia, however, he remains likely to join the group in due course once all relevant formalities have been successfully concluded. Arsenal have already agreed an initial fee of £55m (€63.5m) for Gyokeres and they'll also pay around £8.5m (€10m) in bonuses. ‌ Sporting's preference is to receive £2.2m (€2.5m) once the 27-year-old has made 20 appearances, £2.2m (€2.5m) once Gyokeres has hit 40 appearances and then a further £2.2m (€2.5m) if Arsenal secure Champions League qualification. The Gunners want the final bonus payment to be more difficult to achieve but Sporting are said to be seeking assurances they will eventually receive the entire fee. Arsenal and Sporting are also discussing the FIFA solidarity mechanism which compensates Gyokeres' previous clubs for their role in the striker's development.

Spain earthquake: Everything we know about the tremor which rocked tourist hotspot

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 hit southern Spain on Monday morning. People in more than 50 towns, including tourist hotspot Malaga, could feel the quake. "I was sleeping, and the whole house shook for a few seconds," a tourist in Agua Amarga in Almeria told Spanish newspaper El País. "There was an incredible roar. It woke up my entire family and our neighbours in the complex." 🌍 SHAKEN AWAKE: 5.2 EARTHQUAKE NEAR ALMERÍA, SPAIN 🌍Good morning everyone,This morning started with more than just a coffee jolt for parts of southeastern Spain, a magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck off the coast near Almería, with the epicentre located in the Mediterranean… — Kernow Weather Team (@KWTWeather) July 14, 2025 The earthquake follows a weekend of severe floods and thunderstorms in Spain. Footage shared on social media showed streets turned into rivers, with floodwater swamping shopfronts and restaurants. Health minister Olga Pané said to Catalan News: 'We have decided to evacuate and transfer the 71 patients to the hospitals of Sant Camil, Bellvitge, Igualada, Sant Boi, and Viladecans.' Weather warnings have been activated for 25 provinces, as the country prepares for severe storms in Huesca, Teruel and Zaragoza, Barcelona, Girona, Lleida and Tarragona, and Castellón. Here's everything we know about the earthquake so far: The earthquake was recorded by Spain's National Geographic at 7.13am on Monday. The earthquake struck off the coast of Almería, southeast Spain, almost two miles below sea level. The impact was felt in more than 50 towns across seven provinces, most intensely in 17 municipalities in Almeria and parts of North Africa, according to local reports. #Earthquake (#terremoto) possibly felt 36 sec ago in #Spain. More info soon! — EMSC (@LastQuake) July 14, 2025 Malaga was hit the hardest, and areas such as Granada, Jaen, Murcia, Alicante and Albacete were also affected. The earthquake had a magnitude of 5.4, recorded as IV or V on the European Macroseismic Scale, which equates to "widely observed" to "strong", according to the IGN. It was more powerful than the one that hit Lorca in 2011, which resulted in nine deaths, including a pregnant woman. However, because this earthquake did not hit land, the destruction has been less severe. Earthquakes under 6.0 rarely cause serious damage to well-built structures. Andalusia emergency services received 25 calls from the public, according to El País. However, no injuries have been reported so far. Still, buildings have been damaged across the region. Almeria's airport ceiling collapsed, causing tiles to hang from the ceiling in a cafe in the departures lounge. A worker told local news: 'We heard some noises one after the other and then a loud bang and a great cloud of dust appeared. 'It was a real scare for us. 'There were airport workers having their first coffee of the day but luckily no one was injured.' Meanwhile, the ceiling of a Toyota showroom in Huercal de Almeria was also damaged by the earthquake. The UK Foreign Office has not activated travel warnings for Spain following the floods or earthquake. However, it suggests that travellers should 'check weather warnings from Spain's meteorological office (AEMET) before travel and follow the advice of the local authorities.'
