Arsenal transfer boost as Sporting Lisbon issued threat over Viktor Gyokeres replacement
Almeria president Joao Goncalves has warned Sporting CP they are willing to sell striker Luis Suarez elsewhere as negotiations with Arsenal rumble on for Viktor Gyokeres. Sporting view ex-Watford frontman Suarez, who scored 31 goals in 43 appearances last season, as the perfect replacement for their Sweden international talisman.
However, there is also interest from Europe with Sunderland and Burnley among a list of sides to have made initial enquiries.
Sporting are only willing to proceed with a deal for Suarez once they have finalised the sale of Gyokeres to Arsenal, which is yet to have been ratified due to a difference of opinion over the potential add-ons involved in the £63.5million package.
Almeria chief Goncalves has now revealed he's willing to move forward in negotiations with other clubs, telling CNN Portugal: "Luis has had his best season, he's in the best moment of his career. 31 goals is a number any forward wants to achieve.
"We haven't had any official contact with Sporting to date. We haven't received any formal or informal contact, but we have with other clubs, and we're moving forward with negotiations with other clubs. We're managing our timing.
"Fair value? He has a €40million release clause. To paraphrase Frederico Varandas - we're not asking for the value of the clause, but we're going to defend our interests."
The Colombian international is under contract with LaLiga 2 outfit Almeria until 2029 but it's understood the player wants to join Sporting.
Ultimately, that could prove key because even if Almeria agree a club-to-club deal with another suitor, Suarez may yet hold out for Sporting.
Still, Goncalves' comments provide yet another motive for the Portuguese champions to quickly finalise an agreement with Arsenal for Gyokeres. The Swede is awaiting permission to travel to London to undergo his medical examinations.
He will not be travelling with the Arsenal squad to Singapore today for their pre-season tour of Asia, however, he remains likely to join the group in due course once all relevant formalities have been successfully concluded.
Arsenal have already agreed an initial fee of £55m (€63.5m) for Gyokeres and they'll also pay around £8.5m (€10m) in bonuses.
Sporting's preference is to receive £2.2m (€2.5m) once the 27-year-old has made 20 appearances, £2.2m (€2.5m) once Gyokeres has hit 40 appearances and then a further £2.2m (€2.5m) if Arsenal secure Champions League qualification. The Gunners want the final bonus payment to be more difficult to achieve but Sporting are said to be seeking assurances they will eventually receive the entire fee.
Arsenal and Sporting are also discussing the FIFA solidarity mechanism which compensates Gyokeres' previous clubs for their role in the striker's development.

Ex-Rangers starlet Ryan Hardie was signed for £700,000 last month and he'll now be joined by another former Gers ace at the Racecourse Ground. That man is Josh Windass, who only days ago was released by Sheffield Wednesday following a controversial stand-off with the historic EFL club. The 31-year-old demanded to have his contract ripped up following Wednesday's descent into financial meltdown under owner Dejphon Chansiri. It was reported he could be lined up for a shock return to Rangers but the Owls' new Championship rivals have swooped in first. He has signed a three-year deal, having spent the last five years of his career at Hillsborough. A statement from the Welsh club read: "Wrexham AFC are delighted to announce the signing of Josh Windass on a free transfer following his departure from Sheffield Wednesday, pending registration and international clearance. "The attacking midfielder joins the Club on a three-year deal until the end of the 2027/28 season. "Windass, 31, made 153 appearances for the Owls in total, scoring 53 goals and winning promotion to the EFL Championship in the 2022/23 season. "The creative midfielder played an integral role during that campaign, scoring the winning goal in the play-off final and being named in the EFL League One Team of the Season. Rangers fans unfurl giant tifo ahead of Russell Martin's first match "He also counts Accrington Stanley, Rangers and Wigan Athletic among his former professional teams." Windass said: "I'm looking forward to getting going. I've spoken to the manager, who has showed me his plans for the season and what he expects from the group, and I've really bought into that. "I'd describe myself as honest and hard-working, I like to contribute goals and assists from midfield and that's what I'm looking to bring to Wrexham. "First and foremost, I want to get into the team and earn the respect of my team-mates – I want to be professional, be someone to look up to and then get the team as high up the league as possible." Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson said: "I'm delighted to welcome Josh to the Club. He's a player with a lot of Championship experience and I'm looking forward to working with him over the coming seasons." 2 Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Ex-Premier League star ‘drowned in pool in Greece on day before he was due to fly back to UK for son's first birthday'
No drugs or alcohol found in defender's system, inquest told FOOTIE TRAGEDY Ex-Premier League star 'drowned in pool in Greece on day before he was due to fly back to UK for son's first birthday' A FORMER Premier League star drowned in his pool in Greece on the day before he was due to fly back to the UK for his son's birthday, an inquest heard. George Baldock was discovered at his home in Athens in October where he had been living after signing for Panathinaikos. 3 George Baldock drowned in his pool in Athens Credit: PA A coroner today ruled the death of the 31-year-old, who had previously played for MK Dons and Sheffield United, was an accident. The inquest in Buckinghamshire was told no evidence of criminal activity was found by Greek police. A post mortem also found no drugs or alcohol in his system, with his cause of death given as drowning. It also showed Baldock had a very large heart "that would have meant that he was susceptible to heart arrythmias" - meaning his heart beat too fast or slow. The court heard the defender had played a club fixture just three days before the horror. Baldock had also tragically been due to fly home to the UK the following day to celebrate his son's first birthday. Previous reports said his worried partner had raised the alarm after she struggled to track him down. The owner of the house in the Glyfada area of Athens then discovered Baldock in the pool. Attempts were made to resuscitate the footballer but tragically he couldn't be saved. His family said: "George, you were the most special father, fiance, son, brother, uncle, friend, team-mate and person. "Your enthusiasm and infectious personality brought so much love to those that were fortunate enough to know you and those that adored you from the stands. "We will forever cherish the special memories we have of you and you will continue to live on in your beautiful son." Although he was born in England, Baldock played for Greece 12 times through his nan's heritage. After graduating from MK Dons' youth academy, he had stints at Oxford United, Tamworth and Northampton Town. Baldock moved to Sheffield United in 2017 and made more than 219 appearances for the club. He earned the nickname Furious George due to his aggressive all-action style. The footballer left the club in 2024 to sign for Panathinaikos, where he made four appearances before his tragic death. Tributes flooded in for Baldock following the horror, including from Manchester United star Harry Maguire, who graduated through the Blades' youth team before leaving in 2014. He posted a picture of Baldock on his Instagram page with a broken heart emoji. Panathinaikos said in a statement: "We are shocked by the loss of our George. "The family of Panathinaikos mourns his untimely death. We stand with the family and loved ones of George Baldock." While Sheffield United said: "Sheffield United Football Club is shocked and extremely saddened to learn of the passing of former player, George Baldock. "The defender left the club in the summer after seven years at Bramall Lane and was extremely popular with supporters, staff and team-mates who pulled on a red and white shirt alongside him. "The sincere condolences of everyone associated with Sheffield United are extended to George's family and friends." 3 Baldock had moved to Athens to play for Panathinaikos Credit: EPA
