'Fake narrative': Professor guided Pune woman on filing false rape complaint, says city top cop; medical report inconclusive
Pune's police commissioner refuted claims of deteriorating law and order after a woman's rape complaint was found to be false and misleading PUNE: Police commissioner Amitesh Kumar said on Sunday that a fake narrative about the city's "collapsing law and order" situation was being built based on an "entirely false and misleading complaint of a very serious nature" authorities had received recently. Kumar did not specify the nature of the complaint while speaking at the inauguration of a new police chowkey under the Sinhagad Road police station. However, his observation came against the backdrop of a 22-year-old woman's complaint that an unidentified delivery agent entered her 11th-floor flat in Pune last Wednesday, sprayed some chemical to render her unconscious, and raped her. She had also alleged that the man used her cellphone to take a selfie and keyed in a threat message, 'I will come back'. "However, our teams busted the same within 24 hours by establishing that the complaint given by the woman was entirely false and misleading and tended to hide information from police," Kumar told TOI later. The woman called her friend to her house. The selfie was clicked with her consent, which she later edited. The woman complained to the police about an unknown courier delivery person, which is not the case. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? The investigations have also revealed the two had some arguments following which the woman lodged the misleading complaint." Deputy commissioner of police (Zone V), Rajkumar Shinde, said: "We have received her medical report from the Sassoon General Hospital. However, these reports are inconclusive." The woman holds a BE (data science) degree and works with an IT company in Kalyaninagar. Her complaint created a major uproar across the country before the police established there were discrepancies in her account. Investigators also said she herself wrote the threat message after the friend left her flat. On Saturday, the police got her to record her statement before a Judicial Magistrate First Class in view of the frequent changes she kept making in the narration of the incident. This was also after she and her friend were made to sit in front of each other and questioned. She has also been referred to counselling. Referring to these events as "a very serious complaint" received by the authorities, Kumar noted that a fake narrative was being constructed, one alleging that Pune's law and order systems were "collapsing". Officials from Kondhwa police on Saturday also recorded the statement of a woman professor with a private engineering college who was in touch with the woman before the registration of the rape complaint, they said. "The professor is the complainant's friend and guide and was in touch with the complainant on Wednesday. During investigations, we realised that the complainant had sought all the directions from the professor to lodge her complaint and on how to deal with investigating authorities," Shinde said. "If required, we will question the professor again. We have recorded the woman professor's statement as part of the investigation in the case," he added.

'False And Misleading': Police On Pune Techie's Rape Complaint Against 'Delivery Agent'
Police said a 22-year-old techie in Pune, who claimed that she was raped by a man posing as a courier delivery agent, made "false and misleading" accusations. In a dramatic twist in the Pune rape case, police said the accusations made by a 22-year-old techie in Pune, who claimed that she was raped by a man posing as a courier delivery agent, were 'false and misleading". The woman had alleged that the man came to her doorstep to deliver a courier and spray some chemical on her face to make her unconscious and then allegedly raped her. She had also claimed that he had taken a selfie from her phone and left a message: 'I'll be back". The police had registered a case based on her complaints on Thursday. In a shocking twist, the police found that the two were actually friends, and there was no forced entry into her residence after the accused – a highly qualified professional – was arrested. Even the selfie on her phone was clicked with her consent and was edited by her. Additionally, the woman told police during interrogation that she had filed the complaint 'out of anger" as he had forced himself upon her that evening when she was 'not ready for sexual intercourse". They had reportedly met at her residence in the past as well, when her parents were away. Speaking to reporters, Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar said, 'The evidence, including phone chats, the sequence of events, mobile communication, and the conduct of the woman points out that it is not a case of rape. The complaint filed by her was entirely false and misleading." Police are yet to decide the potential action against the woman, Kumar added, while her motive is still under investigation. The woman had earlier told investigators that her unstable mental condition prompted her to make the false claim of rape. Kumar also lamented that the case circulated 'narratives" that Pune was unsafe for women, highlighting the fact that cops had established within 24 hours that the case was misleading. 'A complaint of a serious crime was registered two days back which spawned narratives about the law and order situation in Pune and questioned the safety of women," he said. 'Pune Police are committed to maintaining law and order, and we will continue to strengthen the safety with the support of citizens." Meanwhile, police released the man on Friday after he told them that he had visited the woman's house on Wednesday night with her consent. First Published: July 07, 2025, 08:04 IST

Pune alleged rape case: Police serve notice to suspect as survivor admits knowing him for a year
A day after releasing the suspect following his detention in the Kondhwa alleged rape case, the Pune police on Saturday issued him a notice under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, Section 41A (notice of appearance before police officer), asking him to cooperate with the investigation and remain available for questioning when summoned. The duo was questioned for over an hour, during which the woman admitted that she had known the suspect for over a year. Their parents were also called to the police station during this exercise, said police. (REPRESENTATIVE PHOTO) 'We also conducted a face-to-face interrogation between the 25-year-old suspect, an IT professional, and the complainant, a techie working with an IT firm. The duo was questioned for over an hour, during which the woman admitted that she had known the suspect for over a year. Their parents were also called to the police station during this exercise,' said Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar, who is monitoring the case. 'According to the woman, although she had invited the man to her house, she was uncomfortable over how things progressed and decided to approach the police. The rape angle is still being probed,' Kumar said, adding that the survivor's medical report is inconclusive on her accusations. Kumar said the complainant is undergoing counselling sessions facilitated by police-appointed professionals. He said that the motive behind the woman's actions is still unclear and part of the ongoing investigation. 'The suspect was not a delivery executive but has known the woman for a year and was invited to the flat by the latter. The selfie was clicked with mutual consent, and the message on her mobile that raised alarm was edited and posted by the woman after he left. The suspect would often visit the complainant's flat and even order food for her through online platforms,' the senior police officer said. Meanwhile, speaking to the media on the alleged rape case after attending a Guru Purnima event in the city on Saturday, deputy chief minister and Pune guardian minister Ajit Pawar said, 'People should not jump to conclusions before facts are established. Based on a report I received late last night, both the complainant and suspect are familiar with each other. I have asked the police chief to hold a press briefing to share details about the case.'

Pune techie rape suspect released on conditions, told to cooperate with probe
Hours after an investigation into a woman's rape allegations revealed that the accused man was not a delivery agent but someone she knew for over a year and that there was no forced entry into her residence, police on Saturday released the man on conditions after giving him a notice. Police said the 22-year-old woman complainant was placed under her parents' care and her statement would be recorded before a magistrate for the rape allegations, which still remain under investigation. A senior officer, who is part of the probe, said, 'The 25-year-old man has been conditionally released and has been given a notice to appear before the investigating officer if and when required. The complainant has been placed under her parents' care. She is being provided counselling support and the police team is in contact with her. Her statement will be recorded before a magistrate under the BNSS Section 183, as rape allegations still remain under investigation. Based on her statement given to the magistrate, the further legal course of action in the case will be decided.' Section 183 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, deals with the recording of confessions and statements by a magistrate. The officer said, 'A complete sequence of events of the case and the outcome of the investigation is being prepared as part of the probe. The statement of the complainant will be recorded during an in-camera hearing on a date that will be decided beforehand.' According to the woman's complaint, around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, a man who had identified himself as a delivery executive came to her residence, on the pretext of delivering a courier containing bank documents, while she was alone. She claimed that the man had asked her to get a pen, following which he locked the door to her apartment from the inside and raped her after spraying a substance on her face that rendered her unconscious. She had also alleged that when she woke up after an hour, the suspect had fled. She had alleged that the accused took a selfie on her phone while she was unconscious and had left a threat message on it. She approached the police station at 1.30 a.m. on Thursday. Several contradictory facts came to fore after a massive police probe involving close to 500 personnel and officers, examining footage from 500 CCTV cameras and voluminous technical leads. The probe revealed the accused was not a delivery executive, but someone she knew for about a year after connecting with him at a social engagement. There was no forced entry into the apartment, the selfie was taken on her phone with both their consent, no substance was sprayed on her, and the threat message on the selfie was later edited by the complainant herself, the probe said. Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar had said on Friday, 'After examination of all the leads, it was established that the accused had visited the victim's house at the time of the alleged incident. He entered the flat with the victim's consent… He was not a delivery or courier executive but an acquaintance of the complainant for over a year. We have established that no spray was used. The selfie was taken with both their consent. The time at which the threat text was edited… was after the man had left the complainant's house. This prima facie suggesting the complainant had herself put that threat text. Whether rape occurred or not is still being investigated.' An official said that the 25-year-old man works with a multinational accounting firm in Pune. Police said they were not in a position to comment on the nature of their relationship. 'When she gave the phone to us, she had deleted some things from it which we have recovered. We have recovered more photos from the time which establish what has actually happened. We have found communication and calls between the two immediately prior to the man visiting the house, suggesting this was a visit with both of their consent,' an officer who is part of the probe said. ‘Will come again': Perpetrator leaves ‘shocking threat' in selfie taken while victim was unconscious
One of the most shocking aspects of the alleged rape of the 22-year-old woman IT professional at her apartment in a residential society of Pune is the threat message the perpetrator left on her phone in a selfie that he took with her while she was unconscious, the police have said. 'I will come again' read the alleged threat message written in English, officials said. Police said the incident took place around 7.30 pm on Wednesday inside the woman's flat when she was alone at home. Police said the woman, who works at a private IT firm in the city, lives with her brother. The brother had gone to their hometown a few days ago. A senior police officer probing the case said, 'One of the most shocking aspects of the case is the threat message on the victim's phone. This message has been written in the form of a text on the selfie that the suspect has taken on his phone. This selfie has been taken when the victim was unconscious. Probe suggests that the photo taken has been edited to write the text on it.' While the officer refused to share exact details of the text, he said it was on the lines of 'Don't leak. Or else I will make viral your photos'. The text goes on to say 'I will come again'. 'We can infer from the message that the perpetrator has also taken photos of the victim, which he threatened to release (online) if she reports the incident or shares that selfie with anyone,' the officer added. Another officer who is part of the probe said, 'The selfie taken on the victim's phone captures a small part of one side of the accused's face. We are working on that as a clue. A composite sketch of the accused is is being prepared based on the description given by the victim. As part of the probe, we will be examining her phone. Some of teams who are part of the investigation are looking into a bulk of technical data. This includes footage of the CCTV cameras installed in the residential society and those on the approach roads to it. Also the data of the phones that cell towers connected with at the time of the crime. And also the data from the computer based system that is used for the management of entry at the society. We also can not rule out the possibility of the suspect having kept a watch of the victim's movement.' Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar said the investigation of the case is being conducted on a war footing and a total of 10 teams of the crime branch and around 12 from the local police station and zonal police unit have been pressed into action for the investigation. The police have registered a case under sections 64 (Rape), 77 (voyeurism) which is primarily for the selfie and photos allegedly taken of the vicitm, and 351-2 (Criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
