Pune techie rape suspect released on conditions, told to cooperate with probe
Police said the 22-year-old woman complainant was placed under her parents' care and her statement would be recorded before a magistrate for the rape allegations, which still remain under investigation.
A senior officer, who is part of the probe, said, 'The 25-year-old man has been conditionally released and has been given a notice to appear before the investigating officer if and when required. The complainant has been placed under her parents' care. She is being provided counselling support and the police team is in contact with her. Her statement will be recorded before a magistrate under the BNSS Section 183, as rape allegations still remain under investigation. Based on her statement given to the magistrate, the further legal course of action in the case will be decided.'
Section 183 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, deals with the recording of confessions and statements by a magistrate.
The officer said, 'A complete sequence of events of the case and the outcome of the investigation is being prepared as part of the probe. The statement of the complainant will be recorded during an in-camera hearing on a date that will be decided beforehand.'
According to the woman's complaint, around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, a man who had identified himself as a delivery executive came to her residence, on the pretext of delivering a courier containing bank documents, while she was alone.
She claimed that the man had asked her to get a pen, following which he locked the door to her apartment from the inside and raped her after spraying a substance on her face that rendered her unconscious.
She had also alleged that when she woke up after an hour, the suspect had fled.
She had alleged that the accused took a selfie on her phone while she was unconscious and had left a threat message on it. She approached the police station at 1.30 a.m. on Thursday.
Several contradictory facts came to fore after a massive police probe involving close to 500 personnel and officers, examining footage from 500 CCTV cameras and voluminous technical leads. The probe revealed the accused was not a delivery executive, but someone she knew for about a year after connecting with him at a social engagement.
There was no forced entry into the apartment, the selfie was taken on her phone with both their consent, no substance was sprayed on her, and the threat message on the selfie was later edited by the complainant herself, the probe said.
Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar had said on Friday, 'After examination of all the leads, it was established that the accused had visited the victim's house at the time of the alleged incident. He entered the flat with the victim's consent… He was not a delivery or courier executive but an acquaintance of the complainant for over a year. We have established that no spray was used. The selfie was taken with both their consent. The time at which the threat text was edited… was after the man had left the complainant's house. This prima facie suggesting the complainant had herself put that threat text. Whether rape occurred or not is still being investigated.'
An official said that the 25-year-old man works with a multinational accounting firm in Pune. Police said they were not in a position to comment on the nature of their relationship.
'When she gave the phone to us, she had deleted some things from it which we have recovered. We have recovered more photos from the time which establish what has actually happened. We have found communication and calls between the two immediately prior to the man visiting the house, suggesting this was a visit with both of their consent,' an officer who is part of the probe said.

Prisoners involved in narcotics cases outnumbered prison's capacity in Vizag
1 2 Visakhapatnam: The central prison in Visakhapatnam is facing a severe overcrowding crisis, with inmates held for narcotics-related offences — primarily ganja — far exceeding its sanctioned capacity. Designed to house 914 prisoners, including 80 women, the prison currently holds 1,764 inmates, nearly double its intended limit. Of these, 1,020 inmates are linked to narcotics cases, comprising 47 male convicts and 973 undertrial prisoners. Around 58% of the total prison population is now made up of individuals accused or convicted under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Speaking to TOI, jail superintendent M Mahesh Babu noted that over 55% of undertrial prisoners are in custody due to cannabis-related offences. He added that nearly 300 inmates from other states have been held for six months to a year, struggling to secure bail due to legal and logistical hurdles. The NDPS Act categorizes offences based on the quantity of drugs seized: up to 1 kg, between 1–20 kg, and above 20 kg. While bail is relatively easier for the lowest category, those caught with larger quantities — especially over 20 kg — face prolonged detention, often exceeding a year. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo With increasing inflow of the inmates in Vizag central prison, the prisons department transferred around 175 prisoners to Rajahmundry central prison a few months ago as a temporary relief measure. Explaining the reasons for accused in cannabis cases finding it difficult to get bail, advocate and special public prosecutor for customs, NCB and DRI, YN Srinivas said majority of the accused and inmates in narcotics related offences are linked to detection of commercial quantities of ganja (above 20 kgs ). Similarly, the accused are from other states and who do not have any connections in Vizag, because of which they cannot secure the local Sureties. Courts cannot jump to a conclusion that the accused has not committed the offence and hence courts are not granting bail in case of commercial quantity as defined in the NDPS Act. This is one of the major issues which resulted in overcrowded prisons, he added. The parliament/legislature has to amend bailing provisions in Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), so as to reduce the overcrowded jails by releasing accused giving liberties. Remember one thing " Bail is the rule and jail is an exception", Srinivas added. Additional barrack at Vizag central prison Mahesh Babu said the govt has sanctioned for the construction of one additional barrack at Vizag central prison to tackle the issue of overcrowding. The works for the new barrack will commence in the coming months and the barrack will accommodate over 200 inmates, he added. Andhra Pradesh has four central prisons located at Vizag city, Rajahmundry, Nellore, and Kadapa. The prison population has been increasing in the state for the past few years. Among all the central prisons, Vizag prison has the largest inmates.

HC: Where did cops get power to close 121 plaints against Ponmudy?
Chennai: From where did the Tamil Nadu police draw power to close all 112 complaints against former DMK minister K Ponmudy for his alleged derogatory statements against women, Shaivites, and Vaishnavites, asked Madras high court on Tuesday. In response, advocate general P S Raman submitted that all the cases were closed after following due process by conducting a preliminary inquiry under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). It was concluded that the speech did not amount to hate speech; therefore, the complaints were closed, the AG added. The remedy available to the complainants does not end here. Under BNSS, they have an option to appeal to the inspector general and the DGP if they are not satisfied with the findings of the investigating officer, AG said. In response to the AG's claim that the former minister was just quoting an incident that occurred 60 years ago, Justice P Velmurugan said, "Can you (TN police) say that only the original speaker can be punished and not the subsequent speaker who made the same speech?" 90% summons served via online in Haryana, says secretary
Gurgaon: In Haryana, 90% of summons are now issued electronically, and 100% of searches and seizures by police during investigations are recorded digitally. Around 68% of witness and complainant statements are being captured using the eSakshya mobile application, standardising evidence collection and improving transparency across investigations. Under the new criminal laws, witness examination has now extended beyond traditional courtrooms, as witnesses can now be examined at "designated places" which include govt offices, banks, and other such places. A total of 2,117 designated places have been set up for witness via audio/video electronic means across all districts, enhancing accessibility and convenience. Additional chief secretary (home) Sumita Misra said the state's digital policing leap is anchored by the full-scale implementation of platforms like eSummon and eSakshya. Notably, 67.5% of witness and complainant statements are being captured using the eSakshya mobile application, standardising evidence collection and improving transparency across investigations," said Mishra. To expedite the trial in cases of crime against children and ensure swift justice, fast track special courts under the Pocso Act have been set up in Gurgaon, Faridabad, and Panchkula, she said, adding, "This will ensure swift trials in heinous crimes against women and children." During her visit to an exhibition on the three new criminals laws at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, Misra said the backbone of Haryana's reforms is a massive capacity-building initiative that has trained over 54,000 police personnel in the nuanced provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam. The training emphasized not only legal understanding but also victim-sensitive investigation, digital integration, and modern evidence handling. In parallel, over 37,800 officers have been onboarded onto the iGOT Karmayogi platform, promoting continuous, self-paced legal education, one of the most extensive digital skilling drives among state police forces, she added. "Haryana has made tremendous and exemplary progress in this direction, and 2,117 designated places have been set up for witness examination via audio/video electronic means across all districts, thereby significantly enhancing accessibility and convenience," Misra added. Also, the state has expanded its forensic infrastructure, with mobile vans deployed in every district and two in larger districts. A Rs 68.70 crore investment has enabled the procurement of modern cyber forensic tools. The govt has approved 208 new forensic posts, with 186 vacancies already filled, further strengthening investigative depth.
