Is Jared Goff underrated? Lions embracing their ‘not too flashy' QB as offense shifts out of Ben Johnson's hands
ALLEN PARK, Mich. — Amon-Ra St. Brown understands the public perception. The wide receiver doesn't agree with it, but he doesn't expect it to change. Jared Goff, the 2016 first overall draft pick whom the Los Angeles Rams would later trade to the Detroit Lions, is underrated. St. Brown believes it. 'I think he's been underrated his whole career and I don't think that'll ever go away,' St. Brown told Yahoo Sports from training camp practice. 'You look at a guy like Josh Allen: He's big, can run, crazy arm strength. You look at a guy like Lamar [Jackson]: fast, one of the best running quarterbacks you've ever seen, does stuff on the field that only he can do. 'You look at Patrick Mahomes: His arm angles, the throws he makes, just unconventional, his ability to win big games.' And Goff? 'You look at a guy like Jared, I mean he's not too flashy,' St. Brown says of his quarterback. 'But he's consistent.' The Lions hope Goff's consistency will help them transition from Ben Johnson, their offensive coordinator and play-caller the prior three seasons, to now-OC John Morton. They'll hope Goff can maintain consistency even as the quarterback and his linemen re-divide protection calls in the wake of four-time Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow's retirement. Last year, Goff's consistency proved potent. While he may not have dominated highlight reels to pace Jackson, Allen or Mahomes, Goff did put up numbers that were both his career-best marks and also challenged his counterparts for best in the league. Only Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow topped Goff's 4,629 passing yards, and only Jackson surpassed his 111.8 passer rating. Goff's 37 total touchdown passes ranked fourth overall, while his 54.7% success rate (a metric that awards players who on first down gain at least 40% of yards to go; on second at least 60%; and on third and fourth 100%) was best in the league. 'The game has slowed down for him, from a protection standpoint,' Morton told Yahoo Sports. 'Being in Year 3 in the offense, you should be hitting on all cylinders, and that's what he was doing last year.' Under Morton, the goal is to recapture that magic. Morton returns to the staff he served on in 2022 looking to accentuate his players' matchups and skill sets, with extra emphasis on teaching the offense from the quarterback's perspective. Morton wants all of his offensive players to learn the quarterback responsibilities even if they won't all have to act on that knowledge. He wants skill players to understand when they're facing man defense and when it's zone; when to anticipate one high safety and when it's two. 'Not every receiver can do that, but the great ones I've been around — they see it just like the quarterback,' Morton said. 'The game slows down for them and they play free.' That quarterback perspective, paired with technician-level routes, have helped make St. Brown 'trustworthy' to Goff, Morton said. [Get more Lions news: Detroit team feed] Morton is implementing his wrinkles into the game plan while offensive line coach Hank Fraley continues to carry run game coordinator responsibilities. How will the two backgrounds mesh? 'In Johnny's background, he likes to throw the ball,' left tackle Taylor Decker told Yahoo Sports. 'That's kind of what the league has been going toward recently. But us, the Lions, we run the ball a lot. We run the ball a lot on third down, third-and-long. We go for it on fourth down a lot. So we have that luxury. 'I think the bulk of what you're going to see that's different with him is his pass-game route concepts. But still there are things that we've been good at here.' Things at which the Lions have been good and Goff has been good. Lions teammates and coaches look at Goff and, in some ways, believe in him for the same reasons others don't. That unassuming, unflappable, not-spectacular-to-a-point-that's-almost-spectacular quarterback of theirs? 'He is a superstar, but he's not a diva,' Decker said. 'And I say that endearingly, in a positive light: He's just like a regular guy.' And one destined, the Lions believe, to be perpetually underrated. A club that leans into its underdog mentality wouldn't have it any other way. 'I feel like he's always going to be underrated no matter what he does,' St. Brown said. 'Even if he wins the Super Bowl MVP, there's still going to be people saying stuff. 'I think that's what gets him going. And I love that for him.'

Detroit Lions raining camp medical preview: Wide receivers
The Lions enjoyed very good health with their WR's last season. However, there was big news this offseason with an unexpected knee surgery for Amon-Ra St. Brown. Last season, the Lions kept only four WR's on the initial 53-man roster (St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Kalif Raymond, Isaiah Williams) although Tim Patrick was quickly added in Week 2. Here is the list of WR's starting with the players with the biggest medical question marks entering the season. Ages are at the start of the season. #1: Amon-Ra St. Brown - 25yo ARSB has been amazingly, consistently productive the past few seasons. He was available for all 18 games last year. However, an offseason knee surgery raises some concern. It's unclear when this injury happened or if it's just an accumulation of small traumas over time. The surgery is suspected to be an arthroscopic procedure to clean up cartilage. The severity of cartilage damage is extremely variable, but the fact he was able to effectively play through it last season suggests it's not too serious. However, any level of cartilage damage could become an issue down the road. St. Brown was not placed on PUP at the start of camp which means he's ready to go. Projection: St. Brown likely continues to look like his elite self this season. #2: Tim Patrick - 31yo Coming off an ACL in 2022 and an Achilles rupture in 2023, Patrick rebounded with an excellent, reliable 2024 season by playing in 17 of 18 games. He got $2.5 million guaranteed on a 1-year deal this offseason which means the Lions are pretty confident in him for this coming season. Projection: Patrick continues in his role as the big #3 WR. #3: Kalif Raymond - 31yo Raymond missed five games last year with a left foot injury but was able to return for the final two games. He's been very reliable and productive since joining the team in 2021, but his age is starting to creep up. Projection: Raymond continues in his kick/punt return roles and serves as a reliable WR backup. If the receivers ahead of him stay healthy, his production stays low. But if there are any injuries, Raymond will be ready to step in immediately. #4: Isaac TeSlaa - 23yo The Lions traded up to snag him in the 3rd-round this year because of his size and athleticism. He had a hand fracture in 2022 but has otherwise been healthy. TeSlaa was limited this offseason for unspecified reasons, but there isn't any sign of anything concerning. His absence from PUP is confirmation. Projection: His production this year depends a lot on the health of the players ahead of him. He'll take a big jump in status next year when Patrick and Raymond might be gone. #5: Tom Kennedy - 29yo Kennedy has been on and off the team since 2019. He had a possible arm/shoulder injury in 2023 but should enter the season healthy. Last year, he played 16 offensive snaps. Projection: He won't make the 53-man roster but will be available if the Lions need him during the season. #6: Jameson Williams - 24yo A couple minor ankle sprains are the only health issues since returning from his 2022 ACL. He is young and healthy entering his fourth season. Projection: Williams' role and production continue to increase being the healthiest member of this group. His 5th-year option was picked up, but it's possible he gets an extension before then. #7: Dominic Lovett - 22yo This 7th-round rookie was healthy throughout college. Projection: With so many established players ahead of him, Lovett likely ends up on the practice squad. #8: Jakobie Keeney-James - 24yo This undrafted rookie had some vague injury issues in college. Projection: Practice squad would be a good outcome. #9: Jackson Meeks - 22yo This undrafted rookie had surgery in 2024 for a hairline fracture in his foot which is certainly something to monitor. The Lions reportedly gave him $200,000 to sign after the draft. Projection: The Lions invested some money in him which suggests he has a good chance to land at least on the practice squad. #9: Malik Taylor - 29yo Taylor missed all last year on IR with the Jets for undisclosed reasons. His age and health status make him a questionable fit for the Lions. Projection: Seems like a long-shot to make the team. #10: Ronnie Bell - 25yo Michigan fans fondly remember his exploits, but Bell hasn't done much in the NFL in two seasons with the 49ers. He had a 2021 ACL which isn't a concern now. Projection: Unless he takes a big step up, he probably doesn't have a role on the team. Fans fume as father of NFL star Amon-Ra St. Brown goes viral for ‘breeding' theory
The father of Detroit Lions wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown made waves online while discussing his sons' personal lives, specifically saying they should have children with Black women in order to 'breed' better athletes. John Brown and his wife, Miram, who is white, have three sons, including Equanimeous and Osiris, both of whom were Division I athletes. Equanimeous, a wide receiver and sixth-round draft pick in 2018, played for the Saints last year. Osiris was a wideout for Stanford but didn't pursue professional career due a lingering foot injury, the New York Post reports. On Saturday, the 'St. Brown' podcast — which is hosted by Amon-Ra and Equanimeous — posted a clip of John, a former bodybuilder, explaining his philosophy on 'breeding' and raising three athletic sons. You can watch John Brown explain his breeding theory in the player above. 'I believe in breeding,' John said. 'You gotta pick the right girl and the right guy … Look at you [both], good athlete, I'm Black, mom is white. I've done stepped on it once, you can't keep stepping on it because you're going to mess it up. You're going to weaken it … 'You can't keep cutting it. You and Brooklyn [Adams, Amon-Ra's fiancee], because Brooklyn's half and half, you've got a chance. ' … You've got to be careful, you've got to think about that. I'm Black, I've got the Black gold running through my veins, I'm excited and just going to find the right person to mate with. If I'm white, I'm saying, 'Let me get one of those brothers around here,' if you want to have athletes. If you don't want to have athletes, then just go ahead and spread your seed wherever. 'Mama got that big chin and big toes. Ain't nothing wrong with a big-toed woman … You've gotta think of this stuff, some guys don't think of it until later.' The podcast was an old episode from August 2024, when John joined his sons as a guest. Many were surprised by Brown's comments, while others deemed his remarks to be racist. This isn't the first time John has echoed similar remarks when discussing his sons' personal lives on a mic. During a December 2021 appearance on the 'Momentum' podcast, John explained how he told his sons to marry a Black woman. 'You can't keep cutting that blackness … My sons, I'm like, 'Man, you're all half black and half white. So you better try to marry a black girl because you want some athletes … because if not you gotta know what it is. 'You need a volleyball girl, like [5-foot-9] … African-American, oh yeah. Make sure her knees are lined up, you gotta be careful with that. 'I like little ankles, because they're swift. You want strong knees, and ask her about her family, but don't be so obvious … [Ask] did your dad play sports? Did your mom play? … You gotta think about these things.'
