String of crimes test Jaipur's claims to law enforcement
Jaipur: Even as the state govt speaks of smart policing and "zero tolerance" against crime, the capital city is grappling with mounting security concerns. A series of violent and audacious crimes over the past month has undermined the police's claims of improved law and order. Public spaces have reported multiple cases of brazen crimes scenes, even as the city police continue to cite annual statistics suggesting a drop in crime. July 18-19 night– Shots Fired on Tonk Road What should have been a peaceful night near Gandhi Nagar railway station spiralled into chaos last weekend. Unidentified men on a motorbike snatched a mobile phone from a young woman. When some people chased and managed to block their vehicle, the robbers responded by opening fire. A local shopkeeper, Firoz, was hit in the crossfire. The assailants fled. July 20 – Murder in Paldi Meena Two days later, in the Paldi Meena locality under Jamdoli police station area, Vipin Kumar, 22, was pulled out of his home by Mohammad Anas—a local history-sheeter—and his gang. In front of residents too frightened to intervene, Anas fatally stabbed Kumar 14 times. Locals say the area had long lived in fear of Anas but repeated police complaints yielded little. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You To Read in 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The sheer brutality of the murder and the fact that it occurred without any resistance from the public exposed the extent to which fear, and not law, dominates some Jaipur neighbourhoods. The main accused Anas was arrested in the case on Monday. July 21 – Robbery Outside a Police Station As public outrage grew, so did the audacity of criminals. In Mansarovar, just metres from the Women's Police Station (South), a 35-year-old woman riding a scooter with her six-year-old daughter was targeted Monday. A man snatched her gold chain in broad daylight and sped off. In her complaint, the woman alleged that policemen present nearby saw the crime happen but did nothing. The optics were damning: a daylight theft, outside a police outpost, with the victim's child present and yet no police response. Accused are yet to be tracked. July 22 – Second Youth Dies of Stabbing Injuries While the city was still reeling from Vipin Kumar's murder, another fatal stabbing was reported from at Sanjay Circle police station area. Wajid, a 22-year-old, succumbed to injuries sustained during a dispute on July 20. He was stabbed on the road in the presence of passers-by and rushed to a hospital but could not be saved. His death marked the fourth major violent crime in Jaipur within five days. The main accused was arrested Tuesday night. Earlier Crimes Set the Tone Even before these events, the warning signs were visible. On June 27, a gang assaulted a local eatery owner in Kanota, leaving him unconscious before fleeing with Rs 8,000 in cash. On June 28, a jeweller in Pratap Nagar was waylaid by assailants who beat him and looted jewellery and cash. On July 2, a 65-year-old woman exiting the Polo Ground near the Rajasthan High Court was drugged and robbed. Each of these cases displayed the same pattern: bold, public attacks in areas where police visibility should have served as a deterrent. Police claim crime Falling In the face of mounting criticism, the Jaipur police have pointed to crime statistics. According to senior police officials, total registered cases fell by 14%, from 14,868 in the first half of 2024 to 12,839 in 2025. The officials said loot cases declined by 19% and in most cases of crime, including murders in Paldi Meena and in Sanjay Cricle areas, the accused were promptly arrested.
