Teenager dead after hit-and-run in Sheffield
A teenage pedestrian has died and an electric bike rider was left seriously injured after a hit-and-run incident in Sheffield. The 16-year-old boy was walking on Staniforth Road in Darnall when he was hit by a grey Audi, shortly after it collided with an e-bike at around 4.50pm on Wednesday. The Audi left the scene after the crash. The 16-year-old died in hospital. His family has been informed. The rider of the e-bike, an 18-year-old man, is in hospital with serious injuries. A man and woman, both in their forties, have been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. Det Ch Insp Andy Knowles, of South Yorkshire Police, said: "We know that this incident will have caused significant concern in the local community, and our thoughts are with the boys loved ones." He urged people not to share distressing footage of the incident online. Investigations continued on Staniforth Road on Thursday as people laid flowers at the scene. Eyewitness Mazher Iqbal was returning from work on the bus when he saw what happened. He said: "As the bus was coming in I just saw a car coming at speed towards these cyclists. It was quite chilling when I saw the young man just go into the air. "I've never experienced anything like it. When I saw him I was shocked." Mr Iqbal, who said he regularly saw the boy in the area, and another witness attempted CPR in a vain attempt to help him. "It was really sad we couldn't save him," he said. "He's a young man and I see him every day at the shop. I just feel for the family. We have the celebration of Eid tomorrow and his family will be mourning." Mojid Khan, who runs a nearby catering business, was called by police after the incident. CCTV footage recorded by his premises showed the boy walking down the road appearing to throw and catch a bottle before being struck by the car. A crowd of witnesses then gathered at the scene. Mr Khan said: "What we saw on the CCTV, that was quite distressing. It was very disturbing to see that footage. "I can't even begin to imagine the trauma the family is going through." "Everyone is shocked, they can't believe something like that is happening."
