‘Electric' live show brings radio magic to Pretoria venue

Pretoria residents were treated to a spectacle of live music and radio show magic during the 2025 Anele and the Club Live show at SunBet Arena, Time Square, on Saturday night, July 19. The electric event, back by popular demand, was presented by 947 and included appearances by hosts Anele Mdoda, Frankie du Toit, Thembekile Mrototo, and Cindy Poluta. Audiences were treated to giveaways and quizzes as well as performances by Matthew Mole, Nasty C, Boity Thulo, Will Linley, Chrizz Beatz, and Anaya Sounds, to name a few. Those in attendance described the atmosphere as 'electric'. According to attendees, it felt 'unchoreographed and spontaneous' – a seamless ride from one moment to the next. During the performance, locals were also treated to a nostalgic surprise: Nige – the legendary face from the classic CTM commercials – made an appearance. Actor Peter Terry reprised his role to introduce the new faces of CTM's bold campaign: Carla, the stylish trendsetter, Tito the charming deal breaker, and Mario the ultimate DIY guy. CTM's fresh brand campaign, officially launched at the event, blends heritage with modern flair echoing the company's long-standing promise of fashion-forward design, trusted quality, and smart affordability. It's a new era, but with a respectful nod to Bob and Nige's legacy from the iconic 1996–2006 CTM ads. Do you have more information about the story? ‘I didn't switch lanes – I just widened the road' – Anele Mdoda on her new film

Mdoda says broadcasting taught her the power of connection, while film allows her to deepen that. Anele Mdoda says going into filmmaking was natural progression for her as a storyteller. Picture: zintathu/Instagram Broadcaster Anele Mdoda has seemingly transitioned seamlessly into filmmaking in recent times, with one of her films even earning an Oscar nomination. 'Broadcasting taught me the power of connection. Film allows me to deepen that – to sit in the grey areas, to explore emotion and history with time and texture,' Mdoda tells The Citizen. Mdoda says it's all communication after all. 'I'm just using different tools. I even use food to talk,' she shares. 'It's a natural progression for a storyteller. I didn't switch lanes — I just widened the road.' She spoke to this publication ahead of the South Africa debut of her second film, Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight, on Thursday. Based on the book of the same title written by Alexandra Fuller, Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight is directed by celebrated South African-American actress Embeth Davidtz. The film is produced by Rose and Oaks Media, a company founded by Mdoda, Frankie Du Toit, and Paul Buys. Mdoda, Du Toit and Trevor Noah are the producers. ALSO READ: Anele Mdoda 'beaming with pride' after film impresses at Toronto International Film Festival Bringing in Trevor Noah The film made its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in Canada last September. At that time, Noah hadn't joined the film as a producer, which Mdoda described as 'the most natural alignment'. 'His passion for the story, the continent, and for telling nuanced African narratives to the world made him the perfect partner. He didn't just come in with a name – he came with intention,' said Mdoda about her friend. Mdoda said Noah understands both the global audience and the local heartbeat, and that having that dual lens is 'incredibly powerful'. The move to rope in Noah is similar to that she made with her Oscar-nominated film, The Last Ranger, when she brought Lebo M on board. 'It's about credibility, access and amplification,' she says explaining the decisions. 'When you're telling African stories, having global figures who understand the craft and the politics of storytelling helps break down doors that are often hard to open. Lebo M and Trevor are not just names – they're bridges,' said Mdoda. She added that they are currently working on a project where we will 'plead and beg' for Lebo M to do the score for them. ALSO READ: Anele Mdoda named Content Creator Awards host as she takes over international film festival [VIDEO] Aiming for Oscar glory Through The Last Ranger, Mdoda and her team made history by becoming the first Xhosa film to be nominated for an Oscar. Mdoda gave a resounding 'yes' when asked about whether she wants to enter Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight for Oscar consideration. 'The response at TIFF affirmed that this is a film with international resonance. In the perfect world, Embeth [Davidtz] gets nominated for best director, Lexi Venter for best actress, best screenplay adaptation and best film,' said Mdoda. In the film, Davidtz examines the collapse of colonialism through the eyes of eight-year-old Bobo as Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) approaches its pivotal 1980 election, marking the end of white rule. Davidtz plays the character of Nicola Fuller, mother to young, perceptive Bobo (Lexi Venter). Nicola sleeps with a machine gun, ready to use it for 'terrorists' or snakes, whatever threatens her family. She's taught her daughter that any African could be a terrorist. 'I'm always drawn to stories that are honest, complex and rooted in truth. Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight and The Last Ranger both explore identity in very different ways – but they're ultimately about belonging and, man oh man, the South African backdrop is the ultimate scene to shoot against,' shared the radio host. The film will have a limited cinema release, followed by a broadcast on M-Net and DStv. NOW READ: 'The Last Ranger' team enjoy the Oscars despite not winning award

The 61-year-old billionaire and his new wife tied the knot on June 27 in the presence of 200 guests in Venice after getting engaged in May 2024. However, the former journalist's bridal dress, which took 900 hours of atelier work, did not receive a great reception from the public after it was revealed on 'Vogue' as many online users expressed that they did not like the custom-designed high-necked and mermaid-style design. The 55-year-old bride revealed in an interview with 'Vogue' that she began planning her wedding dress a year and a half ago and also shared that it was inspired by the look of Sophia Loren in the movie 'Houseboat' in 1958. 'I researched pictures of brides in the 1950s. I wanted to reflect back, and I saw Sophia Loren and her hands were like this (in a prayer position) and she was in high lace, up to the neck, and I said, 'That's it. That's the dress,' she shared. Social media users flooded the comment section on the official 'Vogue' Instagram account with their thoughts on the dress. @ wrote: 'Overdose of lace, so many details, a line up of buttons from head to toe, a mermaid shape with a corset, so many geometrical forms. Terrible!' 'It looks like a winter wedding dress,' @kara8107 said. While @Jess added: 'It looks like it's too tight and from 2015.'

Win 1 of 5 Heineken 0.0 hampers including DOUBLE tickets for the F1 Movie at any IMAX cinema PLUS snacks for two, valued at R1 000 each! Heineken® 0.0 takes pole position at the F1® movie premiere South Africa, 27 June 2025: The South African premiere of F1® THE MOVIE was more than just an opulent 'green' carpet meets racetrack moment. With Heineken® 0.0 at the heart of it all, the night brought together friends, fans, and familiar faces to show that you don't need alcohol to enjoy the moment — just good company, great storytelling, and a drink that keeps you in the driver's seat. From track to theatre, Heineken® 0.0 took centre stage at the IMAX Mall of Africa, blending seamlessly into the thrill of Formula 1® and the sophistication of film — all while reinforcing a modern, inclusive message: there are zero reasons needed to choose moderation. Hosted by celebrity F1 fan and radio host, Anele Mdoda, the theatre was packed with South African movers and shakers, including the likes of Girlie Lukhele, Khuli Chana, Bonko and Lesego khoza, Zakes Bantwini, Karabo Didi and so many more. 'As a brand, we've always believed culture has the power to shape behaviour. Tonight's premiere is proof of that,' said Warrick Wyngaard, Marketing Communication Manager for Heineken® South Africa. 'This filmbrings together emotion, adrenaline, and culture. The same ingredients make Heineken® 0.0 such a natural fit. We're leading the conversation around moderation in a way that feels aspirational, modern, and completely in step with how people are choosing to live and socialise today.' Heineken® 0.0 was announced as an official global partner of Apple Original Films' F1® THE MOVIE, a collaboration brought to life with a new campaign directed by the movie's director/producer himself, Joseph Kosinski, and which features the film's stars, Brad Pitt and Damson Idris. Heineken® 0.0 features directly in the film, reinforcing its natural place in the world of Formula 1® – a world the brand has been in partnership with since 2016. With F1® THE MOVIE set to hit cinemas nationwide on 27th June, Wyngaard says that Heineken® 0.0 is leading the conversation about shifting drinking norms, featuring in cultural spaces where audiences are already reconsidering how they socialise. 'Lifestyles are changing and drinking habits are too. More people are choosing low and no-alcohol options for a night, for a lifestyle shift, or just because. We're adapting to give people the freedom to choose what suits them best,' continues Wyngaard. For Wyngaard the premiere wasn't just a first look at F1® THE MOVIE, it was a bold expression of where culture is headed. 'It was a proud moment to be there as Heineken® 0.0, and to have the backing from the global brand team as well as many local celebs and media personalities. This really showcased the incredible transformation in societal views we are witnessing.' SPCA responds to 'concern' over dogs in Anele Mdoda post

The SPCA has publicly responded to an image of two dogs spotted in a X post by radio and TV personality Anele Mdoda. This comes amid news that content creator Sasha Tshiamo is facing animal cruelty charges relating to an emaciated dog seen in her viral TikTok video. The dog, nicknamed 'Bobby,' has since been removed and is awaiting adoption. In April, Anele announced her engagement to partner, with partner Bulelela 'Buzza' James, with a traditional lobola celebration. On her X account, Anele Mdoda posted images of her trip to her family home in the Eastern Cape. In the images, Anele and a group of elders were seen enjoying a plate of meat whilst sitting outdoors. 'Perfect day at home', she captioned the post. In the comments section, many X users spotted two hungry dogs in the background, likely waiting patiently to join in on the festivities. Many jokingly tagged the SPCA. @DUNCAN160: 'SPCA, they are eating alone while the dogs are just watching @KiptonNative: 'Bobby and his mate are waiting for their bones. They are not impressed by the delays.' @IAmWhatIAmAt100: 'The dogs are so skinny, look at how sad the other one is behind them Responding to being tagged in Anele Mdoda's posts, the SPCA's official X account thanked the public for their 'concern.' It replied to one X user: 'The dogs in the photos appear in good condition and not in distress. It added: 'If you believe otherwise, please let us know'. Apart from the dogs, several X users also criticised Anele Mdoda for her choice of clothing – a tracksuit and sneakers – whilst engaging with community elders. Clapping back, Anele posted: 'You can wear anything when you are at home. This is not up for discussion. My family elders are the ones who called me there. Please apply whatever diluted rules to culture in your homes'. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 .
