Nike set to make history with collaboration that's 'steeped in Indian culture'
Nike's historic collaboration with Indian designer brand NorBlack NorWhite seeks to turn the brand's performance pieces into "symbols of cultural connection" and will be "steeped in Indian culture". Sportwear giant Nike has launched its first major collaboration with an Indian designer label NorBlack NorWhite (NBNW). The limited-edition styles celebrate Indian culture and craftsmanship and 'invite women into sport' with unrestrictive silhouettes. NBNW is the brainchild of Mriga Kapadiya and Amrit Kumar. The New Delhi-based label is known for combining traditional Indian crafts and textiles with streetwear silhouettes. The Nike x NBNW collection is rooted in the practice of bandhani: a centuries-old Indian tie-dye technique used to create the complex patterns. According to Nike, the collaboration helps transforms the brand's performance styles into 'symbols of cultural connection' and introduce 'new communities to colours and patterns steeped in Indian culture'. The collection includes sportswear and leisurewear essentials including a hoodie, tank, cropped T-shirt, bras and shorts. A Nike x NorBlack NorWhite crossbody bag is also part of the limited edition collection as are four footwear silhouettes for women: the Nike Air Max Craze, Motiva and Pegasus 41. The collection is available globally on June 11 at and select Nike Stores. The Nike Calm x NorBlack NorWhite Women's Slides (£54.99) are currently available online in the UK. As are the High-Waisted Printed Biker Shorts (£32.99), matching Light-Support Padded Printed Sports Bra (£37.99) and the Dri-FIT Printed Tank Top (£44.99). The collaboration is noteworthy not just for its hues but for its focus on silhouettes that promote easy and effortless movement for women. Women's kit is often cited by athletes as particularly restrictive and unfunctional and this new range addresses these shortcomings with breathable and free-flowing pieces. 'This collection shines a light on the rigor, dedication and ancestral knowledge that's rooted in Indian culture, and we hope each piece inspires women to draw into their own athletic mindset while navigating everyday life in India and around the world,' says Mriga. At the time Nike shared the collaboration was meant to "disrupt the global fitness and activewear industry with best-in-class innovation in service of all women athletes — championing their confidence, strength, femininity and competitiveness like never before."

Wrestler Anshu loses Ranking Series selection trials
CHENNAI: Double Olympian Anshu Malik lost the 57kg wrestling selection trial bout held at the IG Stadium, New Delhi on Tuesday. The trials were held to pick the national team for the Ulaanbaatar Open Ranking Series scheduled in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia from May 29 to June 1. Anshu, who represented the country in Tokyo and Paris in 57kg, initially didn't meet the criteria set by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) for the trials but was later given a go ahead for the competition. Anshu had won a silver medal each in the 2021 World Championships and 2022 Commonwealth Games, "She was trailing 0-7 with a few seconds remaining in the bout when she opted out due to an injury. It was her first bout in the trials and the winner, Neha Sangwan, went on to finish first in the weight category," a WFI source, who watched the bout from the sidelines, told this daily. Anshu, 23, who is part of TOPS core group, hadn't taken part in the last selection trials held in March to pick the team for the Asian Championships. According to the WFI criteria, only those who competed in the previous trials were eligible for the latest competition. Besides, the federation had decided to conduct trials only in weight categories wherein Indian wrestlers had returned empty handed from the continental tournament. Sunil Kumar (87kg) and Nitesh (97kg) had won a bronze each in the Greco-Roman style while Udit (61kg silver), Deepak Punia (92kg silver) and Dinesh (125kg bronze) were the medallists in the freestyle in the Asian meet. The trials for men wrestlers were held in Lucknow on Monday. A trial was held in Sunil's weight category too as he is said to be injured and cannot compete in the Ranking Series.

Anshu urged to take part in selection trials for Mongolia Ranking Series
CHENNAI: Tokyo and Paris Olympian Anshu Malik has expressed her interest to compete in the Ulaanbaatar Open Ranking Series scheduled in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia from May 29 to June 1. Anshu informed the TOPS (Target Olympic Podium Scheme) about her interest. Despite not meeting the eligibility criteria set for the aforementioned competition, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), in turn, has made an exception and urged the wrestler to earn her spot in the national team by taking part in the selection trials that's scheduled to be held at the IG Stadium, New Delhi, on Tuesday. As the 23-year-old — who is part of TOPS core group — hadn't taken part in the last selection trials which was held to pick the team for the Asian Championships, she is not eligible to take part in the Delhi trials, which will determine the participants for the third Ranking Series of the year. "She informed the TOPS but the chief coach of the women's team has urged her to book her spot in the national team by winning the 57kg selection trials," a source in the know of things told this daily. Anshu, a 2021 World Championships and 2022 Commonwealth Games silver medallist, last represented India at the Paris Games in August 2024 where she lost to USA's Helen Louise Maroulis in the first round. Moreover, the upcoming trials will be held only in weight categories wherein the wrestlers didn't win medals in the continental championships. While the women's trials are in Delhi, the men's trials, both in Greco-Roman and freestyle, will be held in Lucknow on Monday. Indian men wrestlers had won five medals (two in GR and three in freestyle) at the Asian meet then. Similarly, the women wrestlers had returned with a haul of five medals at the event. Sunil Kumar (87kg) and Nitesh (97kg) had won a bronze each in GR while Udit (61kg silver), Deepak Punia (92kg silver) and Dinesh (125kg bronze) were the medallists in the freestyle. "Sunil is injured so now the trials will be held in nine weight categories in the GR. In the freestyle, trials will be organised in seven weight categories," added the source. Manisha clinched 62kg gold while Reetika returned with 76kg silver in the Asian event held in Amman, Jordan from March 25 to 20. Antim Panghal (53kg), Muskan (59kg) and Mansi Lather (68kg) had bagged a bronze each. "Apart from Anshu, Radhika has been allowed to compete in the 68kg as before the trials for the Asian Championships, she had submitted her medical certificate requesting to skip the competition. As Mansi is injured, she has been given permission." A total of 40 wrestlers (top 4 in each weight category) in every style have been camping at their respective centres after the Asian tournament. The WFI, along with Sports Authority of India (SAI), have chosen Lucknow for men wrestlers while the IG Stadium in New Delhi has been selected for the women's camp.
