Venturing into acting was an enjoyable experience: Director Anup Bhandari

Director and composer Anup Bhandari recalls making music for his directorial Rajaratha at composer Ajaneesh Loknath's studio a few years ago, when filmmaker Bobby CR walked in and casually greeted him with, 'Hello, Dr Anand. ' 'I was surprised and asked her what she meant,' Anup recalls, adding, 'That's when she shared her idea for a directorial and how she envisioned me playing one of the characters in the film.' While Anup has made appeared in cameos in his own films before, Bobby's directorial debut Just Married marks his first fullfledged acting debut. 'Having a caravan to myself, an assistant holding an umbrella over me, extended lunch breaks, and watching series in the van during free moments — it was all new to me,' he admits. 'I've never been this relaxed on a set before,' he says. But detaching from the director's mindset wasn't easy. ' Additionally, on working with a female director, Anup tells us, 'I genuinely appreciate the sensibility women bring in. Bobby and I had a wonderfully collaborative process. And as a woman, the perspective she brings to the story is sentimental, sensitive and sensible,' he observes.

Billa Ranga Baashaa maker Anup Bhandari admits hiding Vikrant Rona's Rangitaranga connect was wrong

In 2022, when the promotions of Kiccha Sudeep's Vikrant Rona began, it was publicized as an action fantasy drama, with the trailer declaring that the film would present the world's new hero. Expectations of a vigilante/superhero movie grew with this, but at the same time, eagle-eyed audiences noticed a few elements that suggested a connect with director Anup Bhandari's debut film, Rangitaranga. Kiccha Sudeep in Vikrant Rona Watch both Rangitaranga and Vikrant Rona on OTTplay Premium The Gara Gara Gaggara Jarba Pira Nalkuri Netthara Parba mentioned in the Vikrant Rona trailer featured in the Dennana Dennana song from Rangitaranga. There was also a news clipping about an event in Kamarottu village, which is where Rangitaranga was set, on the investigation board Sudeep's character puts up. The speculation was that Vikrant Rona would be an origin story, given that it was set in a time before the events of Rangitaranga and that Anup would probably urge audiences to watch/rewatch his maiden film before the Sudeep-starrer hits theatres. That was not to be, though, which, in hindsight, Anup says was a wrong call made at the time. There was no mention of a Rangitaranga connect whatsoever, so when the film released, that was mentioned as one of its major issues. Audiences would have preferred if Anup had admitted that it was in the Rangitaranga universe. Now, as he prepares to re-release the film to celebrate its 10th anniversary on July 4, 2025, Anup has clarified that Vikrant Rona was initially meant to be Rangitaranga 2 and took the shape it is in now after Kiccha Sudeep came on board. The filmmaker says that he was advised to make certain changes in keeping with Sudeep's image, following which the actor agreed to do the film. During the promotions, then, there were internal team discussions about whether or not to reveal the Rangitaranga connect. There was a school of thought that given the scale of the project, it would not be wise to make such a revelation. With so much money at stake, Anup felt he could not say no and stick to his guts. But today, he feels he should have. Despite this issue, Vikrant Rona was a major hit, but Anup says that it would have been even better if they had come clean about it being set in the Rangitaranga universe, given that the latter was a much-loved film. His plan, he adds, was to have Sudeep's introduction shot with a rock version of Dennena Dennana playing, which, however then that thought changed and it became an action sequence with the Gumma Banda Gumma song.

India's richest singer, charges Rs 15 lakh per concert, still doesn't own a house, name is..., not AR Rahman, Arijit Singh, Sonu Nigam, Diljit Dosanjh

Known for his soulful voice and energetic stage presence, this celebrated singer once captivated the small screen by joining a reality show hosted by Bollywood's beloved superstar. While his appearance stirred conversations in 2018, it's his musical journey that truly defines his legacy. With a fan base that spans continents, he commands packed arenas and delivers unforgettable live performances, which have earned him the title of Bhajan Samrat. The Bhajan Samrat Of Singing Community Here we are talking about renowned singer Anup Jalota, popularly referred to as Bhajan Samrat, who was born on July 29, 1953. He began accompanying his father, Purshottam Das Jalota, who also sang bhajans, at the tender age of 7. Over time, Anup became one of the most renowned bhajan singers in India. Some of his most iconic bhajans include 'Aisi Laagi Lagan,' 'Main Nahi Makhan Khayo,' 'Rang De Chunariya,' 'Jag Me Sundar Hai Do Naam', and 'Chadariya Jhini Re Jhini.' His extensive record sales of bhajan albums have led to a significant net worth. According to Bharat Ojha, who manages his financial affairs, Anup earns nearly Rs 2 crore each month, as he revealed to Dainik Bhasakr in 2018 regarding his concert earnings both domestically and internationally. He mentioned that Anup typically charges between 8 to 10 lakh rupees for performances in India, which usually last between 45 minutes to an hour. His team consists of six members: five musicians and one female singer. On average, they perform 12 to 15 concerts in India each month, translating to earnings that range from 20 lakh to 1 crore rupees. For international shows, Anup charges around 15 to 16 lakh rupees per concert and does 3 to 4 concerts monthly. He is particularly popular in countries with a large Indian diaspora, and the demand for his performances there is substantial, contributing to an estimated monthly income of 60 lakh rupees from abroad. In a 2024 interview with The Times of India, Anup discussed his marital history, stating, 'Sonali (Sheth) was my first wife, but we faced difficulties, leading to the end of our marriage. I'm happy she found a new partner in Roop Kumar Rathod. My second marriage to Bina (Bhatia) lasted only a year due to our differences and a lack of understanding between us. After experiencing lessons from these two unsuccessful marriages, I finally married Medha (Gujral), and we enjoyed a happy 21-year marriage. We have a son, Aryamann, who resides in New York. Sadly, Medha battled health issues and passed away in November 2014.' Since Aryamann lives in New York and does not stay with him, the bhajan singer has sold all his properties and currently owns no home in India. The 71-year-old artist has expressed in several interviews that he wishes to spare his son the burden of dealing with the formalities of selling his father's house after his death. Anup Jalota also participated in Salman Khan's Bigg Boss 12 in 2018. He was evicted from the show after surviving for 6 weeks.

Health ministry report bats for liver and heart transplants under PMJAY

New Delhi: The union health ministry has called for including liver and heart transplants under the government's flagship health insurance scheme, the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY). This assumes importance given that health insurance schemes in the country cover life and disability, but not organ donation. Also Read | Why are men ignoring their hormonal health? The recommendation comes in a report, titled the National Review Meeting on Organ Transplantation Activities in Government Hospitals, prepared by the National Organ Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO), a top body which manages organ transplantation, under the health ministry. The call for expanding insurance coverage comes in the backdrop of the low number of organ transplants performed in India. Mint has seen a copy of the report, which has been submitted to health ministry. Also Read | Want glowing skin? Take care of your mental health AB PM-JAY is the world's largest health insurance scheme, providing health cover of ₹5 lakh per family per year. Notably, the scheme's ambit has been expanded to include free treatment benefits of up to ₹5 lakh per year to senior citizens aged 70 years and above. Earlier this month, a nationwide review meeting was conducted on organ transplants in government hospitals by a group of top government experts to identify bottlenecks in the system and formulate a roadmap for improvement. The report underlined that government institutions have inadequate capacities and that new centres are required to be established and made functional. It emphasized the need for a multi-pronged strategy involving policy changes, financial investment, and capacity building to bridge the demand-supply gap in organ transplantation. Also Read | ₹1-crore health cover is fast becoming a necessity. But how to afford one? The report highlighted a huge gap between demand and supply: while India requires at least 100,000 kidney transplants per year, only 13,476 were performed in 2024 across both government and private centers. 'These recommendations aim to strengthen India's organ transplantation capabilities and make life-saving procedures more accessible to those in need. During the nationwide assessment of the government hospitals, we identified their challenges and suggested measures to improve their capabilities in terms of infrastructure, finance, manpower etc. We have submitted our report to the health ministry and now the ministry will take action on these recommendations," said Dr. Anil Kumar, director, NOTTO. One of the key recommendations is to include comprehensive inclusion of liver and heart transplantation in national health schemes like PMJAY, he added. 'Some states like Maharashtra and Delhi have expanded their coverage under the PM-JAY scheme. So, the recommendation of the report to include liver and heart transplantation under PM-JAY may be considered to accelerate organ transplantation in the government institutions," he said. Dr Anup Kumar, head of kidney transplant and urology department at Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi, said, ' It is a welcome move. PMJAY offers coverage of up to ₹5 lakh, but these are very expensive procedures require ₹20-25 lakh in the private sector. However, in government institutions these transplants can be done in ₹10 lakh. So, to cover these two transplants, the government has to also consider increasing the coverage plan of PMJAY from ₹5 lakh to at least ₹10 lakh." Further, to bridge the critical demand-supply gap, the expert group has put forth several key recommendations, which include financial incentives for transplant teams, enhanced funding for infrastructure development, establishment of dedicated transplant centres and robust training programmes for medical personnel and transplant coordinators. 'We have tried to understand why government institutions are not able to do the maximum number of organ transplants and what are the solutions. Do we require to build new centres or strengthen the existing capacities. Some government centres like Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre (IKDRC) Ahmedabad conducted a total of 508 organ transplants in the last year, including 195 cadaveric transplants, PGIMER Chandigarh performed 320 organ transplants including 55 cadaveric transplants," Dr. Kumar said. However, the report revealed that government institutions like GB Pant Hospital, New Delhi, despite having the physical infrastructure and licence, did not perform any organ transplants.
