Kolkata Shocker: Law student raped inside college

Kolkata: A student was allegedly raped inside the premises of a Kolkata-based law college on the night of Wednesday, leading to the arrest of three men, two students and a staff member who is also an alumnus of the institution. Police identified the accused as Manojit Mishra (31), Zaib Ahmed (19), and Pramit Mukhopadhyay alias Pramit Mukherjee (20). According to FIR, one of them committed penetrative sexual assault while the others abetted the crime. All three were named in the FIR based on the survivor's complaint. The incident reportedly occurred between 7:30pm and 10:50pm on Wednesday at a location inside the college premises. Following the complaint, the victim underwent a preliminary medical examination at Calcutta National Medical College (CNMC). Several witnesses were questioned, and their statements recorded. The spot was secured and preserved for forensic examination. Manojit and Zaib were arrested on Thursday around 7:20pm and 7:35pm, respectively, near Siddhartha Shankar Sishu Roy Udyan at Talbagan Crossing, and their mobile phones were seized. The third accused, Pramit, was taken into custody from his residence in the early hours of Friday. His phone was also confiscated. All three were produced before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) court in Alipore, South 24 Parganas, on Thursday. The court sent them to four days of police custody for further investigation. NCW takes cognisance The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken cognisance of the incident and asked the West Bengal Police to conduct a thorough and time-bound investigation, ensuring justice for the survivor. Later in the day, the ruling TMC issued a statement condemning the incident. "We unequivocally condemn the tragic rape incident at South Calcutta Law College. Kolkata police have swiftly apprehended all 3 accused, and the full weight of the law will be brought to bear, ensuring the most severe measures are imposed on those found guilty," the party said in a post on X. "This tragedy once again underscores the urgent need for the implementation of the Aparajita Anti-Rape Bill to establish a strong deterrent against sexual offences, emphasising the necessity for speedy investigations, swift trials, and stringent punishments.

Kolkata law college gangrape survivor had ‘bite marks, nail scratches': Medical proof backs female student's complaint

Kolkata law college gangrape case: A senior official of the Kolkata Police on Friday said that the medical examination corroborated a law college student's allegation that she was gangraped, new agency PTI reported. "The evidence corroborated what the victim alleged in her complaint lodged with the Kasba Police Station. There is evidence of forceful penetration, bite marks and nail scratches on her body," the officer told PTI. Chief Police Prosecutor Sourin Ghosal said that the prime accused, a former student of the college and a practicing criminal lawyer, raped the first year law student while the other two stood guard outside the room. "According to a Supreme Court judgement, all persons in a group involved in cases of gangrape must be held liable, even if all of them did not commit the act of rape. In this case, two other persons helped in the rape. So this is a case of gang rape, and they are also accused in the case," Ghosal told PTI. A female student was allegedly gangraped inside a law college in Kolkata's Kasba on June 25. The police have arrested all three accused. According to an ANI report, the three accused, named as Monojit Mishra (31), Zaib Ahmed (19), and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20), were former students or staff members of the same law college. All of them have been sent to a four days police custody till July 1. The alleged sexual assault took place between 7:30 pm and 10:50 pm on Wednesday within the law college premises. According to the official, one of the accused allegedly committed sexual assault, while the others were involved in the crime. The victim's family filed a police complaint against the accused, and the police have taken swift action in the matter. Two of the accused, Monojit Mishra and Zaib Ahmed, were arrested on Thursday, near Siddhartha Shankar Roy Sishu Udyan, close to Talbagan Crossing in Kolkata. Pramit Mukhopadhyay was arrested later the same night at his residence. The police have seized the mobile phones of all three accused. The Trinamool Congress on Friday highlighted the need for implementing the Aparajita Anti-Rape Bill after all three accused were arrested in the Kolkata law college gangrape case. Condemning the incident, the TMC said that the 'tragedy once again underscores the urgent need for the implementation of the Aparajita Anti-Rape Bill to establish a strong deterrent against sexual offences, emphasising the necessity for speedy investigations, swift trials, and stringent punishments.' On September 3, 2024, the West Bengal Assembly had unanimously passed the Aparajita anti-rape bill, that seeks capital punishment for rapists in the state. The anti-rape bill was moved in the wake of widespread and continuing protests that had rocked West Bengal in the aftermath of a Kolkata doctor's rape and murder. The post-graduate trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was found dead in a seminar hall of the institute on August 9. (With inputs from agencies)

‘Police can't be deployed in every college…': On Kolkata rape case, TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee says men should ‘save their female colleagues'

After the alleged rape of a 24-year-old student in Kolkata by a former TMC student leader, party MP Kalyan Banerjee Friday said that police personnel can't be deployed in every college and that men should 'save their female colleagues'. He also called upon women to 'stand against such crimes'. Banerjee said: 'Police cannot be deployed in every college. Male colleagues should be alert and save their female colleagues. Some perverted persons are committing such crimes. Strong action should be taken against them. On the other hand, women should also stand against such crimes.' The case has triggered a political storm in West Bengal with the Opposition BJP and the Left questioning the TMC government. While the prime accused Manojit Mishra was a Trinamool Chhatra Parishad leader during his time as a student, the ruling party has distanced itself, saying he is no longer associated with them. The TMC reiterated its demand for the Aparijtha Anti-Rape Bill, which was first mooted after the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case. Holding that the 'full weight of the law will be brought to bear' against the accused, the TMC posted on X: 'We unequivocally condemn the tragic rape incident at (the college). Kolkata Police have swiftly apprehended all three accused, and the full weight of the law will be brought to bear, ensuring the most severe measures are imposed on those found guilty… 'This tragedy once again underscores the urgent need for the implementation of the Aparajita Anti-Rape Bill to establish a strong deterrent against sexual offences, emphasising the necessity for speedy investigations, swift trials, and stringent punishments. It is extremely unfortunate that the BJP government at the Centre has not lifted a finger to get it implemented.' The TMC continued:'… Our hearts are heavy with sorrow for the profound trauma endured by the victim. The state administration, under Hon'ble Chief Minister Mamaa Banerjee, is committed to providing every possible form of support and assistance to the victim during this distressing time. Justice will be served.'

Kolkata law student gangrape: BJP demands CM Mamata Banerjee's resignation, says Kolkata unsafe for...

File/Representational Kolkata Gangrape: Union minister and BJP's West Bengal unit president Sukanta Majumdar on Friday claimed that the alleged gang rape in a law college in Kolkata shows that female students are 'not safe' in educational institutes in the state. Condemning the incident, the ruling Trinamool Congress said the police swiftly apprehended all three accused in the case and urged the opposition party not to politicise the issue. Majumdar, the union minister of state for education, alleged that the law and order situation in West Bengal is 'in a shambles' even though Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee takes care of the police (Home) department. After the rape-murder of an on-duty doctor in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last year, the alleged incident of gang rape of a student took place in a law college in Kolkata, and this only proved that 'female students are not safe in educational institutions' in the state, the BJP leader said. Majumdar also referred to the killing of a girl in a bomb explosion earlier this week during a TMC victory rally taken out before the results of the Kaliganj assembly bypoll were announced. Condemning the alleged gang rape of a student in a law college in Kolkata, Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari said that a huge protest will be organised in connection with the crime. 'Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has no right to stay put in her chair. She should resign,' he said. Adhikari alleged that senior officers of Kolkata Police have been in Digha, where the chief minister is participating in the Rath Yatra from the newly inaugurated Jagannath temple. TMC leader Jaiprakash Majumdar, urging the leader of the opposition to control his vociferous criticism, said, 'Instead of politicising the issue, a constructive approach should be taken to stop such crimes.' The Trinamool Congress, in a social media post, also condemned 'the tragic rape incident at South Calcutta Law College.' It said that the Kolkata Police swiftly apprehended all three accused in the case. 'This tragedy once again underscores the urgent need for the implementation of the Aparajita Anti-Rape Bill to establish a strong deterrent against sexual offences, emphasising the necessity for speedy investigations, swift trials, and stringent punishments,' the TMC said. The Bill, tabled after the RG Kar hospital incident, aims to modify and introduce fresh provisions in the law related to rape and sexual offences. 'It is extremely unfortunate that the @BJP4India Govt. at the Centre has not lifted a finger to get it implemented,' it said. The TMC said that the state administration under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee 'is committed to providing every possible form of support and assistance to the victim during this distressing time.' West Bengal state president of Trinamool Chhatra Parishad Trinankur Bhattacharjee said that the students' wing of the TMC does not support any act of torture against anyone and demanded the strictest punishment for those found guilty of the crime. 'The police have promptly arrested the accused persons and I am confident that justice will be delivered since the administration in West Bengal is committed to women's safety.' Student and youth wings of opposition parties, including the SFI and the AIDSO, held protests in front of Kasba police station, within the jurisdiction of which the alleged place of occurrence is located, and the law college. Holding placards, the activists of SFI (Students' Federation of India), the student wing of the CPI(M), held a protest in front of the locked main entrance of the law college. The AIDYO (All India Democratic Youth Organisation) workers staged a protest in front of Kasba police station. Congress workers also staged a sit-in in front of the Kasba police station. 'Law and order in the state has gone to sleep, so we are holding a protest sit-in here,' Congress leader Asutosh Chatterjee, who led the agitation, said. Rape in Kolkata law college: BJP alleges ‘TMC allows criminals in educational institutes', ruling party says ‘Aparajita Bill needed'

The rape case of a woman in the premises of a Kolkata law college, registered on Friday, has sparked a political row, with the BJP-led Opposition invoking the R G Kar rape and murder case in August last year. BJP state president Sukanta Majumder said, 'This has happened for the second time in Kolkata where in a educational institute, a student was raped. The TMC gave lease to some criminals in educational institutes. This incident came to light, but such incidents are happening across the state… The police are not firmly taking action because the culprits are close to the TMC. Here, I have heard the main accused also threatened her parents. We say: if anyone threatens your child, come to us, we will give full legal support.' TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee said, 'Police can't be deployed at every college. Male colleagues should be alert and save their female colleagues. Some perverted persons are committing such crimes. Strong action should be taken against them. On the other hand, women should also stand against such crimes.' Meanwhile, Jayprakash Majumder, vice-president of TMC told mediapersons, 'This is a social malice. We all condemn the incident. We should all fight against this unitedly. This is not the time for blame games. Kolkata police has made a prompt arrest and justice will be served.' The Trinamool Congress also took to X, stating: 'We unequivocally condemn the tragic rape incident at (the college). Kolkata Police have swiftly apprehended all three accused, and the full weight of the law will be brought to bear, ensuring the most severe measures are imposed on those found guilty… This tragedy once again underscores the urgent need for the implementation of the Aparajita Anti-Rape Bill to establish a strong deterrent against sexual offences, emphasising the necessity for speedy investigations, swift trials, and stringent punishments. It is extremely unfortunate that the BJP government at the Centre has not lifted a finger to get it implemented.' State secretary of SFI Debanjan Dey alleged that 'the main culprit… is a known criminal of Kalighat. Many cases are pending against him. Even after that, he was given a job at this college. Why didn't the police take action against him?' The TMC continued in its post, '… Our hearts are heavy with sorrow for the profound trauma endured by the victim. The state administration, under Hon'ble Chief Minister Mamaa Banerjee, is committed to providing every possible form of support and assistance to the victim during this distressing time. Justice will be served.'
