Kolkata law student gangrape: BJP demands CM Mamata Banerjee's resignation, says Kolkata unsafe for...
File/Representational
Kolkata Gangrape: Union minister and BJP's West Bengal unit president Sukanta Majumdar on Friday claimed that the alleged gang rape in a law college in Kolkata shows that female students are 'not safe' in educational institutes in the state.
Condemning the incident, the ruling Trinamool Congress said the police swiftly apprehended all three accused in the case and urged the opposition party not to politicise the issue.
Majumdar, the union minister of state for education, alleged that the law and order situation in West Bengal is 'in a shambles' even though Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee takes care of the police (Home) department.
After the rape-murder of an on-duty doctor in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last year, the alleged incident of gang rape of a student took place in a law college in Kolkata, and this only proved that 'female students are not safe in educational institutions' in the state, the BJP leader said.
Majumdar also referred to the killing of a girl in a bomb explosion earlier this week during a TMC victory rally taken out before the results of the Kaliganj assembly bypoll were announced.
Condemning the alleged gang rape of a student in a law college in Kolkata, Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari said that a huge protest will be organised in connection with the crime. 'Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has no right to stay put in her chair. She should resign,' he said.
Adhikari alleged that senior officers of Kolkata Police have been in Digha, where the chief minister is participating in the Rath Yatra from the newly inaugurated Jagannath temple.
TMC leader Jaiprakash Majumdar, urging the leader of the opposition to control his vociferous criticism, said, 'Instead of politicising the issue, a constructive approach should be taken to stop such crimes.'
The Trinamool Congress, in a social media post, also condemned 'the tragic rape incident at South Calcutta Law College.'
It said that the Kolkata Police swiftly apprehended all three accused in the case.
'This tragedy once again underscores the urgent need for the implementation of the Aparajita Anti-Rape Bill to establish a strong deterrent against sexual offences, emphasising the necessity for speedy investigations, swift trials, and stringent punishments,' the TMC said.
The Bill, tabled after the RG Kar hospital incident, aims to modify and introduce fresh provisions in the law related to rape and sexual offences. 'It is extremely unfortunate that the @BJP4India Govt. at the Centre has not lifted a finger to get it implemented,' it said.
The TMC said that the state administration under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee 'is committed to providing every possible form of support and assistance to the victim during this distressing time.'
West Bengal state president of Trinamool Chhatra Parishad Trinankur Bhattacharjee said that the students' wing of the TMC does not support any act of torture against anyone and demanded the strictest punishment for those found guilty of the crime.
'The police have promptly arrested the accused persons and I am confident that justice will be delivered since the administration in West Bengal is committed to women's safety.'
Student and youth wings of opposition parties, including the SFI and the AIDSO, held protests in front of Kasba police station, within the jurisdiction of which the alleged place of occurrence is located, and the law college.
Holding placards, the activists of SFI (Students' Federation of India), the student wing of the CPI(M), held a protest in front of the locked main entrance of the law college.
The AIDYO (All India Democratic Youth Organisation) workers staged a protest in front of Kasba police station.
Congress workers also staged a sit-in in front of the Kasba police station.
'Law and order in the state has gone to sleep, so we are holding a protest sit-in here,' Congress leader Asutosh Chatterjee, who led the agitation, said.

K.C. Venugopal slams RSS, Union Ministers over call to drop ‘secular' and ‘socialist' from Preamble
All India Congress Committee general secretary K.C. Venugopal, MP, has slammed Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Union Ministers for suggesting the removal of the words 'secular' and 'socialist' from the Preamble of the Constitution. Speaking to media persons in Alappuzha on Saturday, Mr. Venugopal said the RSS-BJP agenda to amend the Constitution would not be allowed to succeed. 'There is a conspiracy. After all, the BJP came to power by creating confusion and doubt among the people. Union Ministers have said that secularism and socialism are unnecessary. This amounts to a violation of the Constitution,' he said. The Congress leader said the RSS was evoking memories of the Emergency to push for Constitutional amendments. 'Even the word socialism seems to scare them. The claim that the RSS stands for the Hindu community is false. We will not allow secularism and socialism to be removed. We will resist any such move, including in Parliament,' Mr. Venugopal said. RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale has suggested removing the words 'secular' and 'socialist' from the Preamble. Union Ministers Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Jitendra Singh later threw their weight behind the idea. Earlier, inaugurating the Youth Congress training camp in Alappuzha, he called for strengthening the organisation from the grassroots. 'Good leadership is not enough. The foundation should be strong. We need to strengthen the foundation of the organisation to move forward,' Mr. Venugopal said.

Ashok Gehlot hits out at BJP, NIA over delay in justice for slain Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal's family
Jaipur: Former Rajasthan Chief Minister and veteran Congress leader Ashok Gehlot has criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Central government and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for failing to deliver justice to tailor Kanhaiya Lal Sahu, nearly three years after his brutal murder in Udaipur. Marking the third death anniversary of Kanhaiya Lal, Gehlot paid tribute to the deceased tailor and expressed grief that justice continues to elude the victim's family. "It is a matter of great sadness that even after three years, he and his family have not got justice," the former Chief Minister said in a social media post. Gehlot accused the BJP of politicising the murder case without making any real effort to ensure accountability. "The BJP used this case politically but made no effort for justice, whereas this is a very clear case in which the entire crime and even the confession of the accused is recorded on video," he said. Highlighting the swift action taken under the previous Congress government in Rajasthan, Gehlot said, "During our government, the accused was arrested within just four hours. But that very night, the NIA took over the case. Since then, justice has remained pending." He criticised the NIA and the Central government for procedural delays in the murder case. "Only six out of 166 witnesses have testified in the last three years. No special court or fast-track court was constituted, despite the heinous nature of the crime. Today, this case is being heard under the additional charge of a CBI court," Gehlot said. Taking a jibe at the BJP government in the state, the former Chief Minister alleged that the BJP misled the people with false claims of compensation to the family of the slain tailor Kanhaiya Lal. "They spread confusion with propaganda of Rs 5 to Rs 50 lakh as compensation and used the incident to gather votes," Gehlot said. He also questioned the timing of a new film based on the brutal murder of Kanhaiya Lal up for release. "Everyone knows who stands to benefit politically from this film, but justice has still not been served," he said, adding that if the case had remained with the Rajasthan Police, the accused would likely have been convicted by now. On this day in June 2022, Kanhaiya Lal Sahu was brutally murdered in broad daylight at his tailoring shop in Udaipur, with his throat slit in a gruesome act that shocked the whole country. Three years later, his elder son, Yash Sahu, continues to live by the three solemn vows he took after his father's death, during a protest demanding justice. Yash has neither immersed his father's ashes nor worn shoes or slippers since the murder. He has also not cut his hair for the past three years. "Until the killers of my father are hanged, I will not break these vows," Yash says with quiet determination. The Kanhaiya Lal case is currently being investigated by the NIA.

Former Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik takes swipe at BJP government over delay in Rath Yatra rituals
: A day after the sibling deities' journey remained incomplete, former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik took a sharp swipe at the Mohan Majhi government, citing mismanagement of Odisha's most sacred event. Recuperating in Mumbai after a procedure for cervical arthritis, Mr. Patnaik took to social media platform X to express concern over the series of lapses that marred the Rath Yatra festivities. 'We are not here to point fingers or blame the administration for Friday's (June 27, 2025) inordinate delay in pulling the Nandighosha (Lord Jagannath's chariot). But it is impossible not to voice our deep concern and anguish over how things unfolded during the most sacred event in our State,' said Mr. Patnaik in his statement. He further said, 'it is hard to forget how, last year, Lord Balabhadra's idol slipped during the Adapa Bije Pahandi—a moment that left countless devotees shaken.' 'And now this year, we witnessed Nandighosha ratha still standing at the Singhadwar till 7:45 p.m., only to move a few metres before the day ended. That understandably has left lakhs of devotees who came from all over the world to witness this unique event completely disenchanted and disillusioned. Hundreds of devotees also got injured due to poor crowd management,' said former Odisha CM. As per ritual, chariot pulling must be halted after sunset. On Friday (June 27, 2025), the Nandighosh chariot, which was the last to be towed, could not cover the intended distance due to the large crowd surrounding it.' 'May Mahaprabhu (lord) Jagannath forgive all those responsible for the terrible mess that has overshadowed this divine festival this year. I hope it leads to deep introspection by all in government,' he said. Mr. Patnaik also posted media reports which alleged that two ministers had provided entry passes for the inner cordon to a large number of supporters which was major reason behind the delay. In addition to the delay, hospitalisation of 700 devotees due to a stampede-like situation and heat exhaustion in Puri was said to be upshoot of mismanagement of event. The rituals of the sibling deities of the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri evoke deep emotions among Odias across the State. Successive governments have taken utmost care to ensure the smooth and peaceful conduct of the annual Rath Yatra. Ahead of the festival, multiple rounds of preparatory meetings are held, including those focused on security arrangements. This year, over 200 platoons of police were deployed to maintain order. A high-powered committee, chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida, was constituted to oversee the event's smooth execution. However, despite these measures, the situation spiralled out of control. Allegations have emerged that excessive interference by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in the organisation of the religious festival may have contributed to the unrest.
